23,000 TEU LNG Powered CMA CGM SORBONNE Launched On June 29, 2021, CMA CGM SORBONNE, the latest in a series of nine 23,000 TEU vessels powered by liquefied natural gas joined the fleet of the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics. A ceremony was held at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding under CSSC in Shanghai in the presence of Ludovic Renou, Chief Executive Officer of CMA CGM China, and the ship’s godmother, Jiang Dandan, a well-known philosopher and artist who teaches at Jiaotong University in Shanghai as well as at the Sorbonne in Paris. By choosing to name the ship CMA CGM SORBONNE, the Group pays tribute to the world-renowned institution. A proud symbol of knowledge and of the excellence of teaching and academic research in France, the Sorbonne helps promote the country’s image all over the world. In November 2017, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, made the pioneering decision to equip this series of 23,000 TEU container ships with LNG-powered engines, a first in the history of shipping for vessels of this size. This demonstrates the CMA CGM Group’s determination to support the transition to new energy sources in shipping. LNG is currently the best solution available to reduce shipping’s carbon footprint and protect air quality. The fuel allows for a 99% reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions, a 91% reduction in fine particles and a 92% reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions, well beyond current regulatory requirements. LNG also offers an initial response to combating climate change. Between now and the end of 2024, 44 of the Group’s vessels will be powered by LNG. This technology is one of the first steps towards achieving the CMA CGM Group’s target to become carbon neutral by 2050. Source - Strategic Research Institute

BioLNG Production Project to be Set up at French Port EveRé, operator of the multi-process household waste treatment plant commissioned by Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence, the CMA CGM Group Elengy, a subsidiary of Engie, operating liquefied natural gas terminals at Fos-sur-Mer and TotalEnergies, a global multi-energy company that produces and supplies energy, have joined forces to study the feasibility of creating France’s first production unit for liquefied biomethane, a low-carbon alternative fuel dedicated to energy transition in the shipping industry. Produced by converting the biodegradable part of household waste from the Marseille Provence region, BioLNG would allow for the decarbonization of shipping services departing from the Grand Port Maritime in Marseille and would be used primarily for the CMA CGM Group’s LNG-powered vessels. BioLNG, combined with the dual-fuel gas engine technology developed by CMA CGM, reduces greenhouse gas emissions (including carbon dioxide) by at least 67% relative to well-to-wake VLSFO (the complete value chain). On the basis of a tank-to-wake measurement (at vessel level), greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 88%. Liquefied natural gas allows for a 99% reduction in sulfur oxide emissions, a 91% reduction in fine particles emissions and a 92% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions. By the end of 2024, 44 of the CMA CGM Group’s vessels will be powered by LNG. The project fits perfectly into the local ecosystem, benefiting from the particularly well-suited and already existing infrastructure at the Grand Port Maritime, including EveRé’s waste methanization unit, Elengy’s LNG terminals, which will be used for the storage and delivery of the BioLNG, TotalEnergies’ bunker vessel, which will be located at the port as of January 2022, and CMA CGM’s fleet of LNG-powered vessels. The feasibility study has been launched within the framework of this large-scale project, which corresponds with the national drive to promote BioLNG as defined in France’s Mobility Orientation Law. The CMA CGM Group, Engie and TotalEnergies have already been working together for several months as part of the Coalition for the Energy of the Future, which aims to step up the pace of development of future energy sources and technologies and to support new sustainable mobility models, thereby reducing the environmental impact of transportation and logistics. In order to make true technological revolutions possible and achieve tangible results by 2030, the Coalition has set three main targets: 1. To considerably increase clean energy supply sources; 2. To reduce energy consumption per equivalent kilometer transported; 3. To reduce the proportion of emissions attributable to transportation and logistics. Source - Strategic Research Institute

KONGSBERG Propulsion & Automation Package for Bulk Carrier Kongsberg Maritime has been commissioned to deliver comprehensive integrated equipment and systems package for an ambitious and environmentally-responsible new bulk carrier project. The gas-powered ship, which can be fuelled using either zero CO2 emission LBG (Liquefied Biogas) or conventional LNG, is being built for the Norwegian short sea shipping company Seaworks, utilising a design which originated with Norway’s leading vessel architects, Polarkonsult. Having been impressed with KONGSBERG’s products, services and support on previous commercial marine projects, Polarkonsult approached KM with a view to supplying a propulsion system and LNG engine for the new bulk carrier. During the consultation, KM proposed an integrated solution which would enhance operational efficiency and prove far more cost-effective than separate systems, and this is the approach which has been agreed upon. KM’s scope of delivery for the newbuild bulk carrier is extensive. The mechanical aspects of the integrated solution encompass steering and reduction gear, bow and stern thrusters, the rudder, a controllable pitch propeller system and a Bergen gas main engine. On the electrical and digital side, the delivery includes energy and power management systems, an energy storage unit, an electro package and a K-Chief marine automation system for monitoring and control of all key vessel functions. The bulk carrier is now being constructed in Wuhu, China after a careful tendering process saw 15 shipyards throughout Europe and China bidding for the contract. Pandemic restrictions unavoidably slowed down the contract negotiations, resulting in a few months’ delay to the original schedule. Nevertheless, all parties concerned have shown unflagging determination to see the project through, and construction is now back on track. Source - Strategic Research Institute
Volkswagen to Switch to Low Emission Logistics with LNG Ships Volkswagen is the first automaker to transport most of its new vehicles overseas using low-emission LNG ships. After the first two LNG car carriers entered service in 2020, Volkswagen Group Logistics has now ordered four more ships with dual-fuel engines that can be powered with environmentally friendly liquid gas. They should be traveling the world’s oceans by the end of 2023, serving the North American route between Emden in Germany and Veracruz in Mexico. On the return trip, the LNG ships will transport new vehicles destined for Europe. Soon, six of the nine car carriers crossing the North Atlantic for Volkswagen will be powered by LNG. The further decarbonization of shipping will result in substantial CO2 reductions, with the use of liquid gas enabling Volkswagen to cut the ships’ CO2 emissions by up to 25 percent (tank-to-wake). “In line with the Group’s commitment to e-mobility and climate-neutral production, the LNG fleet used by Logistics represents a major contribution to making Volkswagen net carbon neutral by 2050,” says Simon Motter, Head of Volkswagen Group Logistics. Volkswagen was one of the first car manufacturers to subscribe to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement that aim to limit global warming to significantly less than two degrees by 2050. The Volkswagen Group has therefore committed to e-mobility as well as to the sustainable production and use of new electric vehicles. The company follows the principle of focusing first on the avoidance of CO2 emissions and then on reducing emissions as far as possible. Only unavoidable emissions are offset by climate protection measures. In Germany, the Group has already switched all rail transport with Deutsche Bahn to green electricity and is extending this to transport throughout Europe. On coastal routes, the Group already operates two car carriers with biofuel produced from plant-based residues such as waste oil from the food industry. This has resulted in an 85-percent reduction in CO2emissions (well-to-wake). Exclusive long-term agreements have been signed with shipowners Wallenius Marine and SFL Corporation for the use of the four new car carriers on the North Atlantic route. The state-of-the-art ships are being built in China. They each have a capacity of around 7,000 CEU (car equivalent units), which corresponds to between 4,400 and 4,700 vehicles from the Volkswagen Group’s model mix. The ships will be powered by 13,300 kW dual-fuel engines from MAN Energy Solutions and, in eco-speed mode, will be able to travel at speeds of 15 to 16 knots (28 to 30 km/h). In contrast to other LNG-powered marine engines, the two-stroke engines from MAN Energy Solutions use a high-pressure technology that results in virtually no methane slip, making the ships chartered by Group Logistics especially climate-friendly. The two LNG ships that came into service in 2020 are also equipped with this climate-friendly technology, which was a key factor in choosing these ships. Source - Strategic Research Institute
Delta Offshore Energy’s at Bac Lieu LNG Power Plant Approved Delta Offshore Energy’s LNG-to-Power project for Bac Lieu province in southern Vietnam reached another major milestone on 30 March 2021, when a special meeting of the Bac Lieu Province People’s Council approved a land requirement of 70 hectares for the project.
