Repsol Starts La Serna Wind Farm in Castilla y León Strategic Research Institute Published on : 16 Feb, 2023, 2:11 am Repsol has started producing electricity at its first renewable project in Castilla y León, named PI. Located in the provinces of Palencia and Valladolid, it consists of seven wind farms which will have a total installed capacity of 175 MW once completed. The company has successfully completed the grid connection of the first wind turbines. These turbines, located at the La Serna wind farm in the town of Ciguñuela in the province of Valladolid, are already feeding 100% renewable energy into the grid on a trial basis. Once the seven PI wind farms enter commercial operation, they will produce 596 GWh of renewable energy per year, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 170,900 households, i.e. some 427,250 people, which is equivalent to more than the combined population of the cities of Valladolid and Palencia. Repsol is making progress in the development of other renewable projects, such as Delta II in Aragon. This facility consists of 26 wind farms, located in the three provinces of Aragon (Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel), with a total capacity of 860 MW, the company's largest renewable project to date. Of these 26 wind farms, four are already operational, with a total potential of 160 MW, after the San Bartolomé I and II wind farms, with 100 MW, were recently commissioned. Work on these two wind farms began in February last year and was completed in less than 11 months. Construction of the other 18 Delta II wind farms will start once the relevant administrative procedures have been approved. These 18 farms have a combined capacity of 571 MW. When completed, Delta II's renewable generation will supply electricity to nearly 800,000 homes and avoid the emission of more than 2.6 million tons of CO2 each year.
Equinor & SSE Carry Scoping Work Dogger Bank Offshore Wind D Strategic Research Institute Published on : 16 Feb, 2023, 2:12 am Leading energy companies Equinor and SSE Renewables are carrying out early scoping work to explore options for developing a fourth phase, Dogger Bank D, of the world’s largest offshore wind farm. Equinor and SSE Renewables each own 50% of the proposed Dogger Bank D development. The Dogger Bank D proposal would require a new development consent order to progress into construction and could add an additional 1.32 GW in fixed-bottom offshore wind capacity to the 3.6 GW already in construction with phases A, B and C of the project. Dogger Bank D would be located in the eastern zone of the Dogger Bank C lease area, more than doubling the utilisation of existing acreage. The project’s progression remains subject to agreement with The Crown Estate. The developers will release an initial scoping report in late March outlining ongoing work to explore the technical feasibility of deploying latest-available technology to bolster the UK’s renewable energy capacity. There are two options being explored for the energy generated by the offshore windfarm: a grid connection and/or green hydrogen production. The first would see power from Dogger Bank D connecting to a grid connection in Lincolnshire, where National Grid is installing new network infrastructure in response to the UK Government’s ambitions to generate 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030. The second option being considered by the developers is the use of electricity produced by offshore wind to generate green hydrogen at a dedicated electrolysis facility in the Humber region. The facility, if developed, could become the UK’s largest green hydrogen project and, subject to supportive Government policy and supply chain alignment, could contribute to the UK Government’s green hydrogen ambitions.

Elogen to Supply Electrolyser to Crosswind Offshore Wind Project Strategic Research Institute Published on : 17 Feb, 2023, 3:46 am GTT’s Elogen has signed a contract with CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco for the development of the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind project, to design and manufacture a Proton Exchange Membrane electrolyser with a power of 2.5 MW. The project will start with an initial engineering phase, followed by fabrication and topside integration. Elogen's PEM electrolyser will be installed offshore in 2025, off the coast of the Netherlands, and will convert electricity produced on-site into green hydrogen, giving the project more flexibility to adapt to variations in power output. The HKN offshore wind project puts a strong emphasis on innovation, with the objective of being able to store energy during periods of high electricity generation from renewable sources and release it during periods of low generation. Among the five key innovations identified by CrossWind to meet the challenge of the intermittency inherent to renewable energy, a hydrogen production unit will be installed on site to produce and store hydrogen and convert it back to electricity when required.
New German Offshore Wind Farm Renamed Nordlicht I Strategic Research Institute Published on : 20 Feb, 2023, 3:30 am In the coming years, Vattenfall intends to build Nordlicht I, a state-of-the-art offshore wind farm with an installed capacity of 980 megawatts without government subsidies.

TenneT Selects 3 Parties for Land Stations for Dutch 2GW Projects Strategic Research Institute Published on : 27 Feb, 2023, 3:30 am TenneT has selected Dura Vermeer, BAM Infra Nederland and Visser & Smit Bouw in a framework agreement for civil engineering works for the construction of the 2GW land stations in the Netherlands. In a framework agreement, TenneT has selected Dura Vermeer, BAM Infra Nederland and Visser & Smit Bouw for the civil engineering works for the construction of the land-based stations for the 2GW projects in the Netherlands. From 2024, TenneT will realise the connection of offshore wind farms according to a new 2GW standard. With this new standard, the power generated by offshore wind farms will be brought ashore via a High Voltage Direct Current connection. Land stations are the link between the offshore wind farms and the high-voltage grid. At the land station, the direct current is converted to alternating current and the voltage is transformed from 525kV to 380kV, making it suitable for the Dutch high voltage grid. Dura Vermeer, BAM Infra Nederland and Visser & Smit Bouw will realise the buildings and building-related installations for these land stations. Until 2030, this involves the realisation of at least eight land-based stations. The framework agreement can be extended for new 2GW projects are announced within the term of the contract. The basic design of the land stations has already been made. The selected parties are now directly involved in making the detailed design to ensure that the right solutions are chosen. Work on the land stations will start in 2024. The first delivery of the civil engineering work for the land stations is expected in 2026.
Installation of Baltic Eagle’s Offshore Substation Completed Strategic Research Institute Published on : 28 Feb, 2023, 3:30 am Iberdrola announced thatBaltic Eagle’s offshore substation topside has been successfully installed. The operation was executed by Heerema Marine Contractors using the Thialf installation vessel. The jacket foundation had been placed on site in October 2022. The move involved the heaviest lifting operation for the Baltic Eagle project with a total estimated net weight of around 4,200 tonnes. The role of the OSS is to collect the electricity generated by the wind turbines and transform the supply voltage before feeding it into the onshore power grid at the Lubmin grid interconnection point. Iberdrola now starts the offshore phase to make the OSS ready for energization. This will be followed by the installation of the monopiles to which the wind turbines are attached with transition pieces. The monopiles have been manufactured by the regional company EEW SPC from Rostock. Once the wind farm is connected to the grid, the electricity generated by its wind turbines will be delivered via inter-array cables to the offshore substation where it is then transformed from 66 kV to 220 kV and transmitted via two high voltage subsea cables across the 90 km distance to the landing point at Lubmin into the 50Hertz transmission grid. The 220 kV submarine cables were already laid in 2021 and 2022 and deposited on the seabed at a safe distance from the platform position. The next step will be to move the two cable ends into the transformer platform in the second quarter of this year. In May 2021, Iberdrola and 50Hertz signed an agreement to cooperate on the construction, installation and commissioning of the OSS for Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, which is currently, being built in German waters of the Baltic Sea. Iemants-Fabricom was responsible for the manufacturing of all structural elements of the substation, the marine contractor Heerema for transportation and installation, and Siemens Gas and Power for the delivery of all main electrical equipment for Iberdrola’s low-voltage part of the OSS.
Nordex Starts Series Production of Turbines in 6 MW Class Strategic Research Institute Published on : 1 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am Nordex CEO Mr José Luis Blanco pressed the start button for series production of nacelles for turbines in the 6-MW class in front of some 800 employees at the assembly plant in Rostock. The production facility in Rostock is the primary facility for nacelle production in the Nordex Group’s global production network. Some 50% of Nordex nacelles worldwide are manufactured in the German plant. The plant is currently the only one in the Group to manufacture and assemble nacelles, drive trains and switch cabinets for all the Nordex Group’s turbine models from the 2.4 to the 6-MW class The 6-MW turbines from the Delta4000 series manufactured are going straight to two projects in the Netherlands, together amounting to 102 megawatts. The Nordex Group has already received orders amounting to 1.1 GW for the supply and installation of N163/6.X turbines. Here the orders come especially from the developed markets, i.e. the Netherlands, Finland, Turkey, Estonia and Germany. Here many projects are being planned for locations with low wind speeds. For these areas the Nordex Group has developed the N163/6.X with an output that can be configured flexibly in the 6-MW range.
Germany opens 1.8 GW offshore wind tender Germany opens 1.8 GW offshore wind tender The Veja Mate offshore wind park in the German waters of the North Sea. Image by Veja Mate Offshore Project GmbH. Germany's Federal Network Agency has kicked off another offshore wind auction, seeking proposals for the deployment of 1.8 GW of turbines in the North Sea that should be connected to the grid in 2028. The tender involves four sites -- two of them are located in the so-called area N-3, about 35 km (21.75 mi) north of Norderney island with a total potential generation capacity of 900 MW. The two other sites are about 90 km northwest of Borkum and have the potential to accommodate a combined 900 MW of wind turbines. All four sites are pre-examined which means that the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has studied the areas to collect information about the marine environment, the subsoil and the wind and oceanographic conditions. Interested developers will have access to the data as part of the call for applications and the winners in the tender will be able to apply for planning permission without carrying out the studies. Developers are invited to submit bids by August 1, 2023. This is the second offshore wind auction launched in Germany this year. At the end of January, the Federal Network Agency offered four areas in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea that have the potential to host 7 GW of generation capacity.renewablesnow.com/news/germany-opens-...
Vestas picked as preferred supplier for 1.6-GW wind project off Germany Vestas picked as preferred supplier for 1.6-GW wind project off Germany Offshore wind turbines. Image by: Vestas Wind Systems. Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) on Tuesday announced it has been chosen as the preferred turbine supplier for the up to 1.6-GW Nordseecluster wind project cluster in German waters. Canada-based Northland Power Inc (TSE:NPI) and Germany’s RWE AG (ETR:RWE) are behind the huge scheme that calls for the installation of four wind parks in the German North Sea with at least 104 turbines. The joint venture (JV) partners have picked Vestas’ V236-15.0 MW hardware. A firm turbine order for the project is conditional on taking a final investment decision (FID) on the project. Potentially, Vestas will service the machines under a multi-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract. To be located north of the island of Juist, the huge wind farm complex will be installed in two phases of 660 MW and 900 MW, respectively. Nordseecluster A involves the construction of two plants (N-3.8 and N-3.7) with 44 turbines and is currently in the permit application phase. Offshore turbine installation is seen to begin in 2026, with commercial operations to be launched early in the next year. Nordseecluster B, to add two more plants (N-3.6 and N-3.5), will enter construction in 2028 and will become operational at the start of 2029. The Nordseecluster JV, which is 51%-controlled by RWE, has the step-in rights for both sites of the proposed project. In order to exercise it, it will bid in government tenders in 2023.renewablesnow.com/news/vestas-picked-...
Vattenfall Study Reveals How Birds Avoid Wind Turbine Blades Strategic Research Institute Published on : 6 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am The risk of birds colliding with wind turbine blades is sometimes used as an argument against the use of wind power. Seabirds deliberately avoid wind turbine rotor blades offshore, that is the main finding of a new study that mapped the flightpaths of thousands of birds around wind turbines in the North Sea. Most importantly, during two years of monitoring using cameras and radar, not a single bird was recorded colliding with a rotor blade. The movements of herring gulls, gannets, kittiwakes, great black-backed gulls at the Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm were studied in detail from April to October when bird activity is at its height. The results show that birds’ patterns of movement adapt to rotor blades from approximately 120m and become increasingly precisely adapted the closer the birds come to the rotors. There were also some variations between the seabirds studied. The herring gulls and kittiwakes showed horizontal avoidance further away from rotor blades, 90–110m and 140–160m respectively, while the gannets and great black-backed gulls only exhibited avoidance behaviour at 40m and 50m from the tips of rotor blades. During the study, not a single collision between a bird and a rotor blade was recorded, even though birds are at risk of coming into contact with turbine blades. The unique, previously unused, technical solution for the study has been to combine radar data with cameras to identify the species of seabird and create a three-dimensional image of birds’ flight patterns and how they avoid rotor blades. Collision risk modelling to date has, according to Cox, used static model inputs and basic assumptions. The new study has been able to focus in more detail on individual birds’ flight behaviour. The project was also conducted over a significant period of time to make it as accurate as possible. As with most studies, there are several new directions that these findings open. Cox believes that the model using a combination of radar and cameras could set a new standard for collision risk calculations and says that there is still a large amount of data to analyse.
EnBW Sign Pact with City of Hettingen for Hettingen Wind Farm Strategic Research Institute Published on : 7 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am Encouraged by the construction and recent commissioning of the wind turbine in the neighbouring municipality of Veringenstadt and the undisputed urgency of the energy transition towards renewable energies, the city of Hettingen and EnBW have signed a licensing agreement for a wind farm in the area of the sub-municipality of Inneringen. Three to four state-of-the-art wind turbines can be built on the designated area. The special inland wind turbines each have an output of over 6MW. The expected electricity production per plant is around 14,500MWh. According to regional and land use planning, the concentration zone in Inneringen is a wind priority area with good wind conditions. The existing data were confirmed by EnBW's wind measurements several years ago. Thanks to new legal bases with regard to species protection, it was possible to redefine the current situation for the effects on flora and fauna with regard to wind turbines. An ecological upgrading through afforestation of compensation areas with modern mixed forest is also planned as compensation for the required clearing areas for the wind turbines.
RWE & Northland Select Vestas for Nordseecluster Offshore Wind Strategic Research Institute Published on : 7 Mar, 2023, 3:30 am RWE and Northland Power are making significant progress on the deployment of their Nordseecluster. The companies have selected Vestas as the preferred supplier for their up to 1.6GW cluster consisting of four offshore wind farm sites in the German North Sea. A minimum of 104 Vestas offshore wind turbines (Type: V236-15.0 MW) with a capacity of 15MW each are planned to be installed north of the island of Juist. A service contract for the wind turbines will be also included. All deliverables are subject to the final investment decision for the individual phases of Nordseecluster A & B. Last year, RWE (51%) and Northland Power (49%) established a joint venture to develop the Nordseecluster. The partners expect to achieve substantial economies of scale and leverage synergies during the development, construction and subsequent operation of the four wind farm sites. The preferred supplier agreement recently signed with Vestas, which encompasses all four projects, reflects the efficiency created when bundling activities such as procurement. The Nordseecluster will be constructed in two phases: Two wind farms (N-3.8 and N-3.7) with a combined capacity of 660 MW are currently in the permit application phase. Turbine installation at sea is expected to start in 2026, with commercial operation in early 2027. Of the 104 Vestas turbines in total, 44 are reserved for this initial stage (Nordseecluster A). The two wind farms (N-3.6 and N-3.5) of the second phase (Nordseecluster B) will add a further 900MW of capacity. For both sites the partners plan to bid and to exercise their step-in rights in the German Government’s offshore wind auctions this year, as they did in 2021 for the sites N-3.8 and N-3.7. Offshore construction works for Nordseeclsuter B are scheduled to begin in 2028 with commercial operation to start beginning of 2029.
