"However, some overseas investments are gaining appeal thanks to the latest news coming out of China. For the first time in a while, companies in that market can catch their breath. There are reports that China might be easing regulations, signaling a major shift in policy. Hence, China tech stocks are making the rounds once again.

China has the world’s largest population, a rapidly growing middle class, and over 1 billion internet users. The Chinese tech sector is huge, with 301 unicorn companies (startups worth over $1 billion) and some of the most innovative companies in the world."

China is planning to launch a new regulatory crackdown on its technology sector, focused on companies in the $30 billion live-streaming industry, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The report was sending a number of stocks in the space spiraling lower. U.S.-listed shares of Huya (ticker: HUYA) tumbled 6.5% in premarket trading Wednesday, with DouYu (DOYU) 5.5% lower and Joyy (YY) down near 4%. Kuaishou Technology (1024.H.K.) dropped 6.2% in Hong Kong trading.

Chinese regulators will renew their campaign to rein in the influence of tech companies and exert more control over content consumed by young people online, according to the Journal report, which cited anonymous sources.

New regulations being drafted will limit the amount that internet users can give to live-streamers in digital “tips” each day, and will also limit how much these content creators can receive from fans each day, the report said. Tighter censorship over content also apparently is being considered.

The Journal cited data from the state-run China Internet Network Information Center, which said that live-streaming services, including the likes run by TikTok owner ByteDance, are consumed by about 70% of Chinese internet users.

This would not be the first time that Beijing has taken a hard look at how young Chinese people behave online. Last summer, China’s videogame sector took a hit after regulators said that young people in the country would only be allowed to play online for three hours a week.

Regulatory uncertainty has been a key headwind for China’s sprawling tech sector, which is led by giants such as Alibaba (BABA) and Tencent (0700.H.K.). Alibaba alone lost almost 50% of its market value in 2021 as it came under scrutiny from regulators in both Beijing and Washington.

While some analysts suggest the worst is over, and investors have flocked back to stocks like Alibaba this year, Chinese tech regulators have shown that they are still active. Last month, one of China’s key financial regulators warned of fraud in the metaverse space, in a sign that Beijing will look to closely monitor developments in the fast-growing business of virtual worlds.

Another crackdown on tech, this time focused on live-streaming, would come contrary to indications from Beijing that it was trying to ease the pain of investors in the country’s tech stocks.

China’s top administrative authority said just two weeks ago that it would work to stabilize the country’s stock markets, boost economic growth, and clear up regulatory uncertainties for the Chinese tech sector.

    Heel verstandige maatregel.

CAPEX per shop 100.000 $ + 100.000 personeelskosten tot break even.

Deutsche Bank? Morgan Stanley? GS?
