    Vraag naar staal onder druk

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De mondiale vraag naar staal daalt naar verwachting dit jaar als gevolg van de coronacrisis met 6,4 procent. Dit bleek donderdag uit een rapport van de World Steel Association voor 2021 en 2022.

    In deze zogeheten Short Range Outlook verwacht de organisatie een vraagdaling naar 1,654 miljoen ton staal, waarbij wel wordt uitgegaan van een sneller herstel van de vraag in China, waarvoor een stijging in de vraag voor dit jaar van 1 procent wordt voorzien.

    Een substantieel deel van het herstel zal naar verwachting in de tweede helft van het jaar plaatsvinden, met de recente en geleidelijke intrekking van de coronamaatregelen en wordt gedreven door de bouw en met name infrastructuur.

    Verder wordt er geen nadeel verwacht voor de belangrijkste staalproducerende landen bij een tweede coronagolf.

    In het rapport wordt ook de kanttekening geplaatst dat de vraag naar staal in de ontwikkelde economieën al op een relatief laag niveau stond en nooit helemaal is hersteld van de klap als gevolg van de financiële crisis in 2008.

    De automotivesector wordt dit jaar volgens de staalorganisatie hard getroffen met een omzetdaling van 20 procent voor dit jaar, die nog eens bovenop de verliezen van de afgelopen twee jaar komt.

    ArcelorMittal Brasil Obtains New Environmental Certifications

    ArcelorMittal Brasil starts at the front and is the first steel producer in Latin America to acquire the Environmental Product Declaration for Hot Rolled Coils, Galvanized Coils and Galvalume. The products, intended for civil construction, are developed in the industrial plants of the Flat Steel segment: Tubarão / ES and Vega / SC. The statements issued by the German agency Institut Bauen und Umwelt are based on ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards.

    Audited independently, the documents gather data on the life cycle and environmental impacts of products. It is a pioneering action aimed at demonstrating the environmental impacts of products. “Transparency in showing the impacts of ArcelorMittal Brasil's products is the main aspect of DAP. The certification considers the extraction and production processes, including the end of the product's life ”, explains Guilherme Abreu, General Manager for Sustainability.

    Hyundai Steel Halts Production at Dangjin Works

    Yonhap reported that South Korea's No 2 steelmaker Hyundai Steel has halted production of its electric arc furnace plant on South Korea's western coast due to weak demand. The company said some operations were halted at the Danjin Integrated Steelworks, 123 kilometers south of Seoul, starting this week. It said orders have dwindled to near zero for June.

    Industry observers said that unless the global pandemic comes under control and there is a rebound in the market, Hyundai Steel and others will have to shutter more operations to reduce costs.

    British Steel to Halts Production at Special Profiles Mill in Skinningrove

    British Steel announced that Covid-19 continues to have a major impact on people and businesses across the world and British Steel is working hard to overcome the challenges we and our customers face. It said “Trading conditions in our markets remain challenging, including for products manufactured by our Special Profiles business in Skinningrove. Earlier this year we paused production at our Special Profiles mill in Skinningrove for three weeks and employees returned to work in April. Since then they’ve continued to produce the high-quality products the mill is renowned for, ensuring we can service market demand. However, as the market remains tough, we’ve now taken the decision to again temporarily pause production at Skinningrove for three weeks, starting on Saturday June 13. While a small number of employees will remain on site, around 300 of our people will be furloughed. We appreciate this will be a worrying time for our people, particularly those in our Special Profiles business, but this is a temporary measure and, like last time,– we’ll look to resume production at the earliest opportunity.”

    It added “We thank all our employees for their continued commitment and flexibility. This has been a challenging time for all of us, and we couldn’t have continued to safely fulfil customer orders and support the UK’s economic recovery without their dedication. We also thank Jingye for their unwavering commitment to the business, as well as our customers, suppliers and contractors, trade union colleagues and the Government for their valuable support.”
