Falling inflation expectations could mean policy rethink -Fed's Bullard Published January 14, 2016 Markets Reuters MEMPHIS – The continued rout on global oil markets has caused a "worrisome" drop in U.S. inflation expectations that may make further rate hikes hard to justify, St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said on Thursday. Since the dramatic fall in oil began in 2014 Fed officials have insisted the impact on U.S. price levels would be temporary, bottoming out at some point and allowing inflation to rise to the Fed's 2 percent target.Bullard said he has so far been willing to look beyond a slip in expectations as likely passing. But he is now worried the plunge in oil has unmoored inflation expectations as well, a fact that would make it more difficult for the Fed to lift inflation to its 2 percent target and could force officials to rethink the four quarter-point rate hikes expected this year. "We are 18 months into this and I am starting to wonder if my story is the right one," Bullard said. "For me inflation expectations are a key factor and if they continue to decline I would put increasing weight on that." He said he still thinks that continued strong job creation would "trump" weak inflation and a slowdown in the growth of gross domestic product. The outlook for four rate hikes still seems "about right," Bullard said. But, coming from a Fed member who argued for an earlier rate hike and who is considered to be on the hawkish end of the spectrum, Bullard's comments reflect the depth of concern at the Fed that it may struggle to meet its inflation goal given the state of the global economy. The Fed raised rates in December in the face of low unemployment and expressed "reasonable confidence" that inflation would increase. Since then oil has slipped again, and U.S. equity markets have nosedived amid a shift in global perceptions about the future of the Chinese economy. A second hike is not expected until at least March. Bullard said that in general he still feels low oil prices will prove a "bullish factor for the U.S." that supports consumer spending. But he said both market-based and long-term measures of inflation expectations have been declining, and their continued fall "is becoming worrisome." Household and business expectations about inflation are considered a key economic variable that can pull the rate of inflation lower, and serve as an expression of lost confidence in the central bank's ability to reverse it. Bullard is a voter on the Fed's rate-setting committee this year. (Reporting by Howard Schneider; Editing by Andrea Ricci)www.foxbusiness.com/markets/2016/01/1...
6:52 pm ET Jan 14, 2016 ASIA Morning MoneyBeat Asia: U.S. Stocks Turn Higher ..... Early on, it didn’t appear any rally would materialize. U.S. stocks followed the lead set overseas. The S&P 500 traded as low as 1878.93, inching ever closer to the August lows (1867). That was about 10 a.m. New York time. Then, abruptly, it all turned around, as if a specific tick set off buy programs across the market. Some were pointing to comments from James Bullard, the president of the St. Louis Fed. A staunch supporter of raising rates, he delivered a speech that sounded less confident about rate increases, citing oil’s persistent decline and lowered inflation expectations. .....blogs.wsj.com/moneybeat/2016/01/14/mo... JPMorgan's Q4 Earnings Beat, But Spell Out Damage by Zacks Equity Research Published on January 14, 2016 | ..... Bottom Line A setback in trading activity and a not-so-impressive equities business were largely expected to act as headwinds for banks this time around and JPMorgan’s results are a reflection of that. However, keeping core expenses at check remained the key strength that helped the bank to brave the palpable weakness to a great extent.
Toronto food banks, shoppers fret as low dollar drives up grocery costs As price of food climbs, demand for food banks expected to rise in the GTA CBC News Posted: Jan 14, 2016 6:57 PM ET Last Updated: Jan 14, 2016 6:57 PM ET Toronto food banks and shoppers on tight budgets are worried as food prices continue to climb due to the low loonie. Last year, the average Canadian household spent $325 more on groceries than they had in the previous year, according to University of Guelph researchers. This year, that number could go up another $20. Currently, the Canadian dollar is worth less than 70 cents US. Cheap Canadian dollar making fruits and vegetables much more expensive 7 foods that will cost you more in 2016, and why Here are some of the increases: Meat could climb by 4.5 per cent Fish and seafood could rise by 3 per cent Dairy, eggs and grains set to rise 2 per cent Toronto food bank Second Harvest, which picks up unused food and donates it to organizations across the city, expects the demand for its service to climb. Currently, it serves some 22,000 people in the GTA. "When I see the dollar going down I begin to worry," said Debra Lawson, Second Harvest's executive director. "What we do every day is going to become harder and harder, and yet it's so critical," she said. Gail Nyberg, executive director of the Daily Bread food bank, said her suppliers have warned her the cost of fresh food — which the food bank adds to its prepared hampers — is going up. Shoppers stung by pricey produce Daily Bread, meanwhile, is trying to help people get the most bang for their grocery buck. It recommends pastas as well as nutritionally-dense meals like sweet potato soup or casseroles. At the grocery store, shoppers said they're searching for deals while the loonie slumps. "You have to look for sales. If you can't find sales, then you're in trouble," one shopper said. "Maybe I won't be able to eat as much," said another. Food prices are expected to keep climbing in 2016, with some estimates projecting a rise of 4.5 per cent over the rate of inflation. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/grocer... @wies,

Dat was precies mijn aanvankelijke insteek t.a.v. TomTom.

Graphite supply critical to the development of the automotive industry Many graphite junior mining companies have been stating that they are going to be selling graphite for the battery application, specifically into electric cars. This quick report is to show the approximate magnitude of this market. The public focus has been on Tesla Motors Inc. and their plans for a giga factory that is projected to have the capacity to produce half a million electric cars per year. This is only part of the story. A total annual worldwide production of approximately six million electric cars is commonly projected by the year by 2020. Note: this projection only includes full electric vehicles and doesn’t include hybrids, or any other use of lithium ion batteries. As a first approximation there will be about 265 kg of graphite per car. As there are 6 carbon atoms required to store one proton, 0.00107 grams of carbon is required for each watt assuming a 50% efficiency of storage and 1.5V battery cells. The 85 kWhr battery in the Tesla model S would then require an estimated 327 kg of graphite. The range of the car is about 450 km, meaning that 0.77 kg of graphite is required per km of range. The power required can be assumed proportional to the mass of the vehicle when equivalent rolling and air resistances are assumed. The Tesla model S has a mass of 2112 kg. Thus, 0.364 grams of graphite is required per (kg*km). What is does number mean? Multiply this number by a car weight (kg) and range (km) and you get the approximate amount of graphite that is required in the car’s batteries. If you assume the average mass of car, which in 2010 was 1,818 kg, and a range of 400 km, then the average car requires 265 kg of graphite. The amount of graphite required for annual car production can be estimated using the average mass of graphite per car and a projection of the number of cars manufactured. The projected number of electric cars sold per year in 2020 is about six million. That is 1.59 million tonnes of graphite. Where is all this graphite going to come from? The differential, or the amount of graphite demand increase each year indicates that one, or more, 100,000 tonne per year mines could open each year solely dedicated to electric cars and this market would not be filled. The graphite will be artificial, natural graphite flakes or natural graphite that has been “balled”. The choice will be economic subject to availability. It is likely, that as long as the quality can be met, the supply will be natural, followed by ball graphite with the remainder being artificial. How does this affect the graphite mining industry? The use of natural graphite in these batteries is almost an economic necessity in order to make the vehicles available at a reasonable cost. The total amount of natural graphite currently produced that is applicable to batteries is approximately 50,000 tonnes and this source is shared with cell phones, tablets and laptops. The exact amount doesn’t matter; it is simply a statement that such graphite is currently not produced in the quantity required and that the expansion of the electric car may be limited by this shortage. This can be alleviated to some extent by the production of ball graphite from larger flakes of graphite. However, the supply still isn’t there. This leaves artificial (pyrolytic) graphite meet this market; at an obvious cost. The conclusion is that graphite at a reasonable cost is already in short supply and will become critical to the development of the automotive industry in the next few years.
