Steel and steel products maker Nucor Corp. (NUE: Quote) reported Thursday a profit for the third quarter that increased 34 percent from last year, reflecting revenue growth amid higher shipment volumes.

Earnings per share and quarterly revenues topped analysts' expectations. Looking ahead, the company expects seasonally lower shipping volumes in the fourth quarter leading to moderately lower earnings.

The Charlotte, North Carolina-based company reported net earnings of $147.60 million or $0.46 per share for the third quarter, higher than $110.31 million or $0.35 per share in the prior-year quarter.

On average, 18 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $0.39 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

The results for the latest quarter were negatively impacted by a net $14.0 million or $0.03 per share partial write down of inventory and fixed asset balances associated with the collapse of a storage dome at Nucor Steel Louisiana in St. James Parish on September 25. There were no injuries sustained, and there was no environmental impact.

Consolidated net sales for the quarter grew 3 percent to $4.94 billion from $4.80 billion in the same quarter last year, and topped eleven Wall Street analysts' consensus estimate of $4.78 billion.

Nucor's total steel and steel products shipped to outside customers grew 7 percent to 6.17 million tons from last year, with total steel mill shipments increasing 6 percent to 5.36 million tons. Steel mills production rose 8 percent.

Third-quarter downstream steel products shipments to outside customers decreased 4 percent from last year.

Average sales price per ton decreased 4 percent from a year ago. Average scrap and scrap substitute cost per ton used in the quarter was $372, a decrease of 2 percent from $380 in the prior-year quarter.

By Greg Robb WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - It is still too soon for the Federal Reserve to reduce the pace of its asset purchase program, said Charles Evans, the president of the Chicago Fed, on Thursday. "The data are still not definitive enough to say that now is time to adjust the QE3 flow purchase rate," Evans said in a speech to a real estate conference in Madison,Wis. Evans said it is not possible to predict the timing of changes to the asset purchase program because it depends on the progress the economy makes. Evans said he would personally like to see "more steady, solid growth" in GDP data to be confident in the enduring strength of the labor market. Evans is a voting member of the Fed's policy-making committee this year. He is one of the leading supporters of the asset purchase program at the central bank
