Oryx Stainless Cuts More Carbon Emissions Strategic Research Institute Published on : 8 Feb, 2023, 6:22 am As the demand for stainless steel continues to rise, a responsible and efficient use of limited global resources is becoming increasingly important. One option for steelmakers to save greenhouse gases is to produce new stainless steel from high-quality secondary raw material blends instead of primary raw materials. Secondary raw materials are upgraded by combining differently alloyed stainless steel scrap to produce blends. These blends being in accordance with the technical specifications needed are used in steel mills as the main inputs in an electric arc furnace process. To a small extent, ferroalloys can be used for analytical fine-tuning. As early as 2010, Fraunhofer UMSICHT researchers determined a savings potential of more than 4.5 t CO2 per ton of blend on behalf of the Oryx Stainless Group. More recent calculations by the UMSICHT team even come to savings of over 6.7 t CO2 per ton of blend for the reference year 2021. The results show: The recycling of stainless steel scrap has great potential to save greenhouse gases. In the project, the UMSICHT researchers have now calculated the greenhouse gas balance of the recycling of stainless steel from the Oryx Stainless Group at the Dordrecht and Mülheim an der Ruhr sites, analogous to the study structure of 2010, for the reference year 2021. The results show that compared with the calculation at that time, the greenhouse gas savings continue to increase. A corresponding study for the site in Thailand is in progress at UMSICHT. Total savings by the Oryx Stainless Group at the two sites in 2021 amount to around 3,015,000 t CO2 –eq, approximately one million metric tons CO2 eq. more than in 2009 (2,026,000 t CO2 eq.). One reason is the comparatively higher output volume. The average weighted savings have also increased to 6.7 t CO2 eq./t blend in 2021. Thus, the results also retroactively show larger savings for the year 2009. Founded in 1990, the Oryx Stainless Group, with its parent company Oryx Stainless Holding, is one of the world's leading trade organisations for raw materials in the production of high quality stainless steels. The focus of the company's business activities is on the handling and processing of stainless steel scrap into Oryx Stainless Blends. These secondary raw material blends, individually fine tuned for each stainless steel producer replace, above all, primary raw materials.
Alleima Develops Sanicro 35 Stainless Steel for Harsh Applications Strategic Research Institute Published on : 13 Feb, 2023, 4:48 am World’s leading supplier of steel for challenging applications Alleima, formerly Sandvik Materials Technology, which already has a large portfolio of super specialty steels, has developed super-austenitic corrosion-resistant grade stainless steel alloy Sanicro® 35 as a response to requirements from the market for a stainless steel alloy that would be able to combine high corrosion properties with high mechanical strength. Alleima embarked on the research project in 2012 and in 2020 Sanicro® 35 was launched globally. This super-austenitic stainless steel, which combines high yield strength, resistance in severe acidic conditions, excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, bridges the properties gap between super austenitic steel grades and nickel alloys. It provides a new, high performance alternative to conventional materials to support more cost effective and efficient operations. Sanicro® 35 has received two awards to date, the Sandvik Innovation Prize in 2019 and MP Corrosion Innovation of the Year Awards 2021. Alleima’s Lead Scientist Mr Rohit Ojha in an exclusive interaction with SteelGuru shared “The biggest challenge we faced in the process of developing Sanicro® 35 was to translate the market requirements of stainless steels and nickel alloys, into an alloy composition that has excellent corrosion resistance. The second challenge was the use of a method to test the localized corrosion properties that also allowed ranking of the different alloys. Traditionally, different test methods have been used for stainless steels and nickel alloys. For Sanicro® 35, we had to enhance the standard ASTM G150 test to achieve an optimal critical pitting temperature. It took years of testing and full production using recycled steel and melting done in a furnace powered by 100% fossil-free electricity to develop Sanicro® 35. Recycled-based stainless steel production has a substantially smaller CO2 footprint compared to a traditional iron ore-based steel production.” While answering to “Which properties differentiate it with grades offering similar solutions” Mr Ojha said “Sanicro® 35 was developed using the right combination of Cr, Mo, Ni and N, which enables it to combine two things: mechanical properties comparable to duplex grades, and corrosion resistance comparable to nickel alloys. These differentiate our new product from existing 6Mo super-austenitic grades.” Mr Ojha added “Sanicro® 35 is designed for extremely corrosive environments (i.e., acidic environments) and seawater applications, where it can be used for either cooling or heating. It is an ideal material for heat exchangers and hydraulic and instrumentation tubing applications in maritime and oil & gas industries.” While answering to “How is Alleima addressing increasing focus on tougher environment in downstream” Mr Ojha underlined “Alleima is committed to being a technology leader and a progressive customer partner. Our technical marketing and sales teams pay attention to challenges and opportunities faced by customers and help them select the best grades for their applications based on years of knowledge and experience. We are not just a provider; we take the time to understand our customers and work with them to solve their downstream challenges. We are also constantly innovating our products and services to meet new and evolved issues in the market. Sanicro® 35 is a proof of that. And with the expansion of our Mehsana Mill in India, we will continue to be there for our customers through thick and thin.” Alleima, formerly Sandvik Materials Technology, is a global manufacturer of high value-added products in advanced stainless steels for the most demanding applications and industries and special alloys as well as solutions for industrial heating. Alleima’s business concept is to be the world’s leading provider of advanced stainless steels and special alloys, as well as products of industrial heating, without compromising Alleima’s goals in sustainability. We are committed to meeting the challenge, as our high value-added products are made with higher quality materials, and we ensure our developed innovative solutions are designed for our customer’s success, while reducing their carbon footprint.

Tesla Develops Ultra Hard CR Stainless Steel Alloy for Cybertruck Strategic Research Institute Published on : 28 Feb, 2023, 5:58 am When electric car pioneer Tesla CEO Mr Elon Musk had introduced the Cybertruck in 2019, he had said that the electric truck's exoskeleton would be made out of a special cold rolled stainless steel alloy that would make it bulletproof. It would also be corrosion-resistant, so it would not need painting. The patent application for “Ultra-Hard Cold-Worked Steel Alloy” was filed in August 2022 and was published last week. The patent says that the special alloy will be used for at least one exterior panel and the vehicle's body. It also says that the vehicle architecture is designed in such a way that the vehicle's outer panels also contribute to the structural performance. Based on the patent filing, the truck's body will feature a corrosion-resistant monolithic metal sheet, which makes applying anticorrosion coating unnecessary. The steel alloy can also be used without a paint coating, which is unusual in the automotive industry. The patent goes into deeper detail about the metal's hardness at 400-500 HV and strength of minimum 1,100 MPa. The Cybertruck is due to come to market later this year, with large-scale production coming in 2024. However, there hasn't been any official information about the company or companies that will manufacture the new metal for Tesla. That said, there's been some talk on social media about a company called Steel Dynamics. Steel Dynamics has a huge factory in Texas that's not too far from Tesla's Gigafactory. Cybertruck is designed to have the utility of a truck with sports car performance. Built to be durable, versatile, capable and high-performance both on-road, Cybertruck is built with an exterior shell made for ultimate durability and passenger protection. Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is designed for superior strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30 X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural skins to Tesla armor glass. Jindal Stainless Acquires 49% Stake in NPI Maker New Yaking Jindal Stainless Ltd, India's largest stainless steel manufacturing company, has entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with New Yaking for investment in, development, construction, and operation of a Nickel Pig Iron smelter facility located in an industrial park in Halmahera Islands, Indonesia to secure a long-term supply of nickel, which is a key raw material for the production of stainless steel. Under the collaboration agreement, JSL will acquire a 49% equity interest for a consideration of approximately USD 157 million. The facility is expected to be commissioned within two years with an annual nameplate production capacity of up to 200,000 metric tons of NPI with an average 14% Ni Content. Mr. Abhyuday Jindal, MD of Jindal Stainless, said "This path-breaking collaboration will enhance value for stakeholders with JSL acquiring a stake in nickel supply to create raw material security for its SS operations. This acquisition will usher a sharper competitive advantage to JSL in Indian and international markets." This is the first strategic partnership entered into by an Indian company for securing a stake in nickel reserves globally as India is deficient in nickel ore. Backward integration will be one of the major benefits of this partnership for JSL, as it will have a stake in the NPI business. The price trend of nickel has been a key factor in the stainless steel business worldwide. Geopolitical issues, logistical hurdles, pandemic-induced constraints, etc., often affect the demand-supply dynamics of nickel, thereby increasing the cost and uncertainty for its user industries such as stainless steel. Currently, JSL meets most of its nickel requirements through stainless steel scrap and NPI & ferro nickel. However, this collaboration will secure ample supply of NPI for JSL and ensure long-term availability of nickel for its operations.
