Stainless steel consolidation pushing Aperam to act - Report Reuters reported that pressure is mounting on Aperam to restructure or seek a partner, as a proposed tie up between two rivals, Outokumpu and Inoxum, could soon make the Luxembourg based company Europe's least competitive major stainless steel producer. Outokumpu's shareholders will meet on March 1st 2012 to vote on the acquisition of Inoxum, ThyssenKrupp's stainless division, a move that could improve the resulting company's cost efficiency and make it more competitive against European peers and aggressive Asian imports. Aperam, which was spun off from ArcelorMittal about a year ago, will now have to improve its cost efficiency to avoid losing market share and improve profitability. Mr Bryan Hall, market analyst at steel consultancy MEPS International, said that "You would think that Aperam's position is now potentially the weakest; it would be no surprise if they were to lose some capacity. They are now the prime candidate for a merger or an acquisition. Everyone looks a bit more attractive now that capacity is being reduced." Outokumpu, which has the Finnish government as its top shareholder, intends to cut almost 1.5 million tonnes a year of stainless steel melting capacity in Europe if its acquisition of Inoxum is approved by shareholders and European anti-trust regulators. Capacity will be taken out by halting melting activity at two non integrated and therefore less cost efficient Inoxum plants in Bochum and Krefeld, Germany, while concentrating production at two modern, integrated mills: one in Tornio, Finland, and one in Terni, Italy. This would help ease overcapacity in the European stainless steel industry, which coupled with ever more aggressive competition from China and Asia has seriously dented profits of the major players in the last few years. A European stainless steel consultant said that "This will benefit the industry as a whole but it's only the first step, not the last, and alone it won't be enough. Somebody else is likely to reduce capacity and the pressure to do the next step is on Aperam. It is obvious that Aperam does not need all the hot rolled coil it produces." The consultant said that Aperam can produce 2 million tonnes of slabs, a semi finished product, but only has about 1.4 million to 1.6 million tonnes of demand. He added that unless it can find new customers, which in a mature market is not easy, it will have to shut down one melt shop. Besides, while the Outokumpu Inoxum merger could eliminated some excess melting capacity, the two companies have made no plans as yet to cut their finished steel production. They have so far only announced additional cold-rolling capacity for 200,000 tonnes a year at the Krefeld plant in Germany, which would boost their finished steel capacity slightly to 2.3 million tonnes per year. Mr Rob Cartman consultant at Hatch stainless steel said that "There is a need to reduce finished steel capacity as well as melt shop capacity and stand alone cold rolled mills will be the next to go because they are not cost efficient. Aperam in Belgium is as inefficient as ThyssenKrupp in Germany. It is now the weakest and least efficient producer in Europe. It has got 2 melt shops in Belgium and neither of them is integrated." An Aperam spokesman said it was implementing a plan to reduce costs and enhance profitability but no closures had been announced. On the question of potential mergers, the company said it remained open to all options. (Sourced from www.reuters.com)
Aperam forecasts pause in stainless steel consolidation Bloomberg reported that Aperam, the stainless steel producer spun off by ArcelorMittal, doesn't see any further consolidation in the stainless steel industry before the planned merger of Outokumpu Oyj and a unit of ThyssenKrupp AG is final. Mr Philippe Darmayan CEO of Aperam said that "The scene is changing and everybody wants to see what will happen in the coming months." Mr Darmayan said that Outokumpu's planned EUR 2.7 billion takeover of ThyssenKrupp's Inoxum stainless steel unit is good news for the industry, as it will reduce excess capacity that has raised costs and suppressed prices. According to steel consultancy MEPS International Limited, the company created by the Outokumpu deal plans to cut about 1.4 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity in Europe by shutting plants. Western European stainless steel capacity exceeds requirements by more than 1 million tonnes. Mr Darmayan, who took the helm in December 2011, is reducing costs and lowering inventories to revive earnings after the company posted a net loss of USD 60 million in 2011. He expects the company to be profitable this year as volumes rise at a similar rate to 2011. Aperam, which is providing stainless steel for the top of the Orbit tower in London's 2012 Olympic Park, predicts demand for stainless steel will rise less than 2% a year in Europe in the coming years, compared with growth of 7% a year in South America.
Op het volgende: Aperam Price 14,73 Price to book value 0,45 Return on equity 0,00 Return on equity 5yrs 0,00 Average ROE next 5 yrs 0,00 Long term debt to equity 32,00% Bookvalue stock 32,72 Future growth based on 5yrs average 1,00 for a period of 5 years Stockprice 5 years 32,72 Rendement per jaar 14,23% Price target 2012 16,82 Arcelor Mittal Price 15,36 Price to book value 0,56 Return on equity 3,03 Return on equity 5yrs 9,04 Average ROE next 5 yrs 7,00 Long term debt to equity 46,00% Bookvalue stock 27,42 Future growth based on 5yrs average 1,40 for a period of 5 years Stockprice 5 years 38,46 Rendement per jaar 20,16% Price target 2012 18,45 Kortom, met deze, overigens, conservatieve berekening in mijn achterhoofd én ervan uitgaande dat de financiële markten meer tot rust gaan komen (kijk maar naar de VIX de afgelopen tijd) zie ik deze beweging als een kortstondige correctie gebaseerd op winstnemingen.

Siemens to modernize main drives of Aperam's HR mill in Belgium Siemens has won an order to replace the existing DC main drives of the finishing mill at Aperam's stainless steel plant in Chatelet in Belgium with more powerful AC systems. This project is part of comprehensive modernization plans within Aperam's Leadership Journey to reduce costs and improve profitability. The drives will be modernized in seven stages during scheduled annual maintenance stoppages, completion is expected by the end of 2019. The first conversion work is planned for mid 2013. A total of seven stands are to be modernized at the finishing mill of Aperam's hot rolling mill. Siemens will supply the motors, converters and transformers for this and will handle installation supervision, commissioning and training. All seven stands of the finishing mill in Chatelet will be equipped with identical compact twelve-megawatt machines which will be used for the first time. Adapting the existing structural environment presents an exceptional challenge, especially with regard to the existing different motor foundations. The modernization project will be carried out jointly by the Siemens Competence Center for electrical and automation engineering in the steel industry in Erlangen in Germany and by Siemens Belgium. Aperam has six production sites in Europe and Brazil with an annual capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of flat stainless steel products for a wide range of applications. The company is quoted on the stock markets of Amsterdam, Paris and Luxembourg. Its main European stainless steel plants are located in Chatelet and Genk, Belgium, and Gueugnon and Isbergues in France. Source - Siemens
MEPS sees global stainless steel output growing by 6pct YoY in 2012 UK based MEPS said that worldwide stainless steel output is forecast to grow by almost 6% YoY in 2012 to give another new record total of 34 million tonnes, despite global economic gloom. According to official figures, global crude stainless steel production in 2011 reached another all time high total of 32.1 million tonnes. This is 3.3% more than the previous record, set in 2010. In the traditional stainless steel making regions, only the EU and South Korea exceeded the previous year's outturn. The United States, Japan and Taiwan all produced less than they had done one year earlier. According to CISA figures, Chinese production climbed by 11.9% to 12.6 million tonnes. However, it is believed that much stainless steel, particularly 200 series material, is made by companies who are not CISA members. This material is, therefore, not included in widely quoted statistics. This under reporting may have amounted to as much as 2.5 million tonnes in 2011 or an additional 20%. If Chinese unreported production continued at the same rate, the 2012 figure would be 36.8 million tonnes. Stainless steel making in the EU was less than 1% higher in 2011 as compared with the earlier year's outturn. MEPS forecast a bigger increase in 2012. It is unlikely that capacity reductions arising from consolidation in the European stainless steel sector will affect output in the immediate future. Annual production in the United States fell in 2011. However, it remains approximately 28% higher than the 2009 figure, which represents the low point of the recent crisis. There have been signs of increased economic and industrial activity in the US and a modest rise is forecast for 2012. Japanese output slipped by 5% in 2011, inevitably affected by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2012. A modest recovery is predicted, boosted by reconstruction and safety schemes. Taiwan's producers have suffered most from the slowing growth in demand in the region. Last year's output was significantly down on the 2010 figure, however, an increase is foreseen for 2012. Whilst output in all the established stainless steel producing countries of the West and the Far East continues to be significantly less than in the peak year of 2006, Chinese output even the official figure has grown by 138% since that time. A further, substantial hike of 10% is predicted for 2012. Source - MEPS - Stainless Steel Review
