China's trade slump eases in March, but pandemic set to deepen export downturn APRIL 14, 2020 BEIJING (Reuters) - The plunge in China’s exports and imports eased in March as factories resumed production, but shipments are set to shrink sharply over coming months as the coronavirus crisis shuts down many economies and puts the brakes on a near-term recovery. Financial markets breathed a sigh of relief after customs data on Tuesday showed overseas shipments fell 6.6% in March year-on-year, improving from a 17.2% slide in January-February, as exporters rushed to clear a backlog of orders after forced production shutdowns. Economists had forecast shipments to drop 14% from a year earlier. Yet, while the trade figures were not bad as feared, analysts say the export and overall growth outlook for the world’s second-biggest economy remains grim as the pandemic has brought business activity across the globe to a standstill. “The above-expectation March trade figures do not mean that the future is carefree,” said Zhang Yi, Beijing-based chief economist at Zhonghai Shengrong Capital Management. Zhang said he expects first-quarter gross domestic product data on Friday will likely show a contraction of 8% - the first quarterly slump since at least 1992. Analysts’ forecasts for China’s first quarter GDP ranged widely between a contraction of 2% and 16%. “A decline in exports throughout the second quarter has been the market consensus now and a drop of 20% or more is a high-probability event. For policymakers, more policies should be rolled out to address the possible societal issues stemming from mass-scale unemployment,” Zhang said. The data showed imports slid 0.9% from a year earlier, also above market expectations of a 9.5% drop, which the customs attributed to improving domestic demand. They had fallen 4% in the first two months of the year. The better imports picture partly reflected shipments that were stuck in ports being cleared and catch-up demand as authorities eased restrictions. Yet, domestic consumption was far from robust with key imports such as iron ore dipping in March, underlining the broad economic strains. [nL3N2C20PE] “Imports should hold up better given that domestic demand looks set to stage a further recovery in the coming months,” said Julian Evans-Pritchard, senior China economist at Capital Economics. “But the quarter of China’s imports that feed into China’s export sector will continue to fall and hold back the recovery in imports.” The overall trade surplus last month stood at $19.9 billion, compared with an expected $18.55 billion surplus in the poll and a deficit of $7.096 billion in January-February. Stock markets in Asia extended their gains after China’s trade report, while risk sensitive currencies including the Australian and New Zealand dollars as well as the pound pulled ahead, mainly on relief on the less gloomy data.in.reuters.com/article/china-economy-...
COVID-19 to Reduce China’s Iron Ore Output by 3% in 2020 - GlobalData Analytics Company GlobalData said that China’s iron ore production is forecast to decline by 3% to 78.2 Mt in 2020 due to the impact of coronavirus (Covid-19). Between January and February 2020, the operating rates at private iron ore mines declined from 34.9% to 29.6% and overall, China’s iron ore production declined by 4.6% year-on-year. Several mines and plants had to temporarily cease the production activities. The deliveries and shipments were either delayed or rescheduled, and there was a shortage of workers, who could not return to mine sites owing to the prolonged Lunar new year holidays, followed by the transportation issues due to lockdown. Vinneth Bajaj, Senior Mining Analyst at GlobalData, says: “As a result of the slowdown in the domestic production, iron ore imports grew by 1.5% year-on-year in January and February 2020 to reach 176.8 million tonnes. However, purchases accumulated at ports due to transportation challenges, owing to the lockdown and inventory at ports had reached a three-month high of 131.1 million tonnes by 7 February 2020.” GlobalData forecasts the iron ore production in China to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 1.1% between 2020 and 2024 to reach 81.6 million tonnes. Bajaj concludes: “The growth will be relatively flat due to the elimination of inefficient steel capacity, as part of the three-year ‘Blue Sky’ environmental initiative, which runs from 2018 to 2020. This initiative is driving domestic steelmakers to utilize high-grade iron ore (Fe 58-62%), which principally originates from Australia and Brazil.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
Dit meldde The Wall Street Journal woensdag. Chinese Steel Exports in March Surge General Administration of Customs data showed that China’s finished steel exports increased by 2.35% year on year to 6.476 million tonnes in March 2020, the highest since July 2018 as Chinese steel mills stepped up efforts to export more in March as well as in April in a bid to ease supply pressure on the domestic market. Exports rebounded in March after falling 27% year on year over January-February. Exports in Q1 were still 16% lower year on year at 14.286 million tonnes. China’s finished steel exports are expected to drop sharply over May-June despite a rebound in March due to a recovery in domestic demand but weak export demand because of the coronavirus pandemic. Moreover Chinese steel exporters have lost its competitive edge to other countries such as Russia, Japan and South Korea, which have lowered their export prices. As a result, some traders said China’s monthly steel exports are likely to shrink in Q2 of 2020 On the other hand, steel imports into China rose 26.5% on the year to 1.137 million tonnes in March. In Q1, imports grew 9.7% to 3.178 million tonnes. Steel imports are likely to continue rising through the second quarter. Source : Strategic Research Institute
China's Benchmark Power Coal Price Falls China's benchmark power coal price fell by five yuan per tonne during the past week. According to Qinhuangdao Ocean Shipping Coal Trading Market Co Ltd, the Bohai-Rim Steam-Coal Price Index, a gauge of coal prices in north China's major ports, stood at 530 yuan per tonne Wednesday, a drop of five yuan week on week. Analysts said that in the coastal coal market, strong supply and weak demand for thermal coal has been unchanged. The rising coal stocks at ports and the sluggish demand for domestic coal have led to a deep drop in coal prices. The supplementary effect of imported coal was still strong, impacting the demand for domestic coal, but the price advantage was obviously reduced. According to the latest data from the General Administration of Customs, China imported 95.78 million tonnes of coal in the first quarter, up 28.4 percent year on year, Released every Wednesday, the BSPI is a leading indicator of China's coal prices. China Catering Industry One of Bigger Drags on Virus-Hit Economy 18 april China’s catering industry was one of the biggest drags on output in the first quarter, leading the world’s second-largest economy into its first contraction in decades as the coronavirus brought business to a near standstill. The accommodation and catering industry fell 35.3% from a year earlier, reversing a 6.2% increase in the previous quarter, the statistics bureau said Saturday in a supplemental report on gross domestic product. The wholesale and retail sector suffered a 17.8% decline in the quarter, while the construction industry shrank 17.5%, compared with a 5.3% increase in the last three months of 2019. Output in industrial enterprises fell 8.5%, after increasing 5.9% in the previous quarter, and manufacturing dropped 10.2%. The services sector overall, which contributed 59% of GDP value in the first three months, contracted by 5.2% in the quarter. China Suffers Historic Economic Slump With Hard Recovery Ahead China’s economy declined 6.8% from a year earlier in the first quarter, its worst performance since at least 1992. Finance and information technology were the only sectors to post growth, gaining 6% and 13.2% respectively.www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-...
China Posts GDP Contraction of 6.8% for Q1 of 2020 The Chinese economy shrank 6.8 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2020, after a 6 percent growth in the last three months of 2019 and compared with market forecasts of a 6.5 percent decline. It is the first GDP contraction since records began in 1992, reflecting the severe damage caused by the COVID-19 outbreak after the authorities enforced a near two-month-long shutdown of all non-essential business activity. The industrial sector dropped 9.6 percent, services fell 5.2 percent and the primary sector went down 3.2 percent. Car production recorded the sharpest decline of 44.6 percent.
