Audi Installs Charging Stations for FC Bayern FC Bayern and its partner Audi have installed 21 charging points for electric vehicles at the Allianz Arena. As of this summer, the charging infrastructure will gradually be expanded, allowing electric vehicles to soon be charged in other areas of the record-holding German champions’ stadium complex. In September 2020, FC Bayern and Audi started their journey toward sustainable mobility together. The club’s fleet of vehicles has been converted to electric drive in an ongoing process. A large proportion of the squad and the club management are now on the road with fully electric vehicles in the form of the Audi e-tron or Audi e-tron Sportback. Soon, the Audi e-tron GT will be delivered to the pro athletes. Audi and FC Bayern have already installed 38 charging points at the training ground on Säbener Straße. They were connected to the grid in late summer of 2020, in time for the start of the Bundesliga season. FC Bayern has reduced its fleet consumption to less than 95 grams of CO2/km, and is thus making an important contribution to sustainability. The charging infrastructure for electric cars is constantly expanding. With the e-tron Charging Service (eCS), Audi offers access to more than 220,000 charging points in 26 countries throughout Europe. Furthermore, Audi is consistently expanding its range of electric models. In addition, Audi is strengthening its range in the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) segment: around every second combustion-engine series will also feature a plug-in hybrid model this year. By 2025, Audi intends to offer more than 20 fully electric models and significantly accelerate the expansion of its PHEV range. The company predicts that by then, fully electric and hybrid automobiles will make up around one-third of its global distribution. Source - Strategic Research Institute
AMAG Supplies ASI Certified Sustainable Aluminium to Audi AMAG and Audi are once again taking a collective step towards a sustainable future with the use of ASI materials. The first AMAG aluminium to be certified in accordance with the international Chain of Custody standard of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative is being shipped to the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. This material produced in accordance with this strict sustainability standard is used for the outer body sheet of the A6 Avant tailgate. For AMAG, this order not only represents its first-ever sale of ASI-certified materials, it also marks the company’s debut as a supplier of outer body sheets for this model series. The ASI Chain of Custody standard defines the requirements for creating a responsible aluminium supply chain. This covers every step of the value creation process – from the production of bauxite, or secondary aluminium through processing in the foundry and rolling mill, to the finished product. ASI certification confirms that both the primary and secondary aluminium used by AMAG and the company’s internal processes meet the high sustainability requirements set out by the standard. Volkswagen blijft bezorgd over chiptekort - media Bijbouwen capaciteit kost jaren.
Daimler, BASF, Fairphone & Volkswagen for Lithium Mining in Chile Several companies have initiated a “Responsible Lithium Partnership” aiming to work towards responsible natural resource management, including lithium, in Chile’s Salar de Atacama. This cross-industry partnership is funded at its inception by Daimler AG, BASF, Fairphone, and Volkswagen Group. The partnership intends to foster a dialogue among local stakeholders, generating and synthesizing scientific facts and seeking solutions in a participatory manner. The platform aims to facilitate a common understanding of the status quo and jointly develop a shared vision for the future of the Salar de Atacama watershed. In addition, it intends the co-development of a joint action plan to improve long-term integrated natural resource management and undertake the first implementing steps. Another aim is to synthesize and verify available technical data, improve on it if necessary, and increase accessibility. The Responsible Lithium Partnership will commence in spring 2021, with a planned duration of 2.5 years. It does not intend to facilitate the sourcing of lithium nor the purchase or selling of any raw mineral. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, commissioned by the companies, will coordinate the partnership seeking to find common ground by building a multi-stakeholder platform among all relevant actors in the Salar watershed - ranging from civil society groups including indigenous communities, government institutions, mining companies and beyond. The financing companies Daimler AG, BASF, Fairphone, and Volkswagen Group are aware of their responsibility along the entire supply chain, including their human rights due diligence for raw material sourcing and production. They have, therefore, initiated the “Responsible Lithium Partnership” to promote sustainable development, contribute to the reduction of potential negative impacts and strengthen the protection of human rights. Due to the expansion of e-mobility and digitization, the demand for lithium as key material in batteries is expected to grow in the next years. The World’s largest lithium reserves and large parts of the total production are located in the Salar de Atacama. The region’s ecosystem is fragile and there is lack of consensus regarding the impacts and risks of lithium mining and other economic activity in the region. Potential risks derived from water and brine table shifts could potentially harm the ecosystems and affect local livelihoods. Addressing such water-related risks effectively requires the collaboration of stakeholders. Source - Strategic Research Institute

Volkswagen to Use New 3D Printing Process for Vehicles Volkswagen is pressing ahead with the use of innovative 3D printers in car production. For the first time, the newest process, known as binder jetting, is being used to manufacture components at the company’s main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. Whereas conventional 3D printing uses a laser to build a component layer by layer from metallic powder, the binder jetting process uses an adhesive. The resulting metallic component is then heated and shaped. Using the binder jetting component reduces costs and increases productivity – for example, the components weigh only half as much as those made from sheet steel. Volkswagen is currently the only car maker using this 3D printing technology in the production process. To achieve this innovative advance, Volkswagen has invested an amount in the mid-double-digit million euro range over the past five years. In addition, the company has entered into a software partnership with Siemens and expanded its existing collaboration with printer manufacturer HP Inc. With the first full-scale use of binder jetting, they intend to acquire important experience and learn, for example, which components can be produced economically and quickly in the future or how additive manufacturing can support the digital transformation of production at Volkswagen. HP is providing the high-tech printers needed and Siemens the special software for additive manufacturing. One key process step that has been worked on jointly by Siemens and VW is optimizing the positioning of components in the build chamber. Known as nesting, this technique makes it possible to produce twice as many parts per print session. From summer, the three companies intend to establish a joint expert team at the high-tech 3D printing center which opened in Wolfsburg at the end of 2018 and enables the manufacture of complex automotive components using 3D printing. The center also trains employees in the use of these technologies. By 2025, the aim is to produce up to 100,000 components by 3D printing in Wolfsburg each year. The first components made using the binder jetting process have gone to Osnabrück for certification: components for the A pillar of the T-Roc convertible. These weigh almost 50 percent less than conventional components made from sheet steel. This reduction alone makes the process especially interesting for automotive production applications. Volkswagen has already successfully conducted crash tests on 3D-printed metallic vehicle components. Until now, the production of larger volumes was not cost-effective enough. However, the new technology and the collaboration will now make production-line use economically viable. Source - Strategic Research Institute
,,Wacht even”, sluit Thomas Ulbrich gedecideerd af.
Audi Research for Recycling Automotive Plastics As part of the THINKTANK Industrial Resource Strategies, researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have been working with Audi for a good six months on the pilot project Chemical Recycling of plastics from automotive manufacturing. Now that the project has been completed, it is clear that the Chemical Recycling of mixed plastic waste is both technically feasible and environmentally and financially promising. The plastic waste from automotive manufacturing can be processed into pyrolysis oil and could replace petroleum as a raw material for the production of high-quality plastic components in Audi models. The material cycles closed in this way save valuable resources, energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As such, Chemical Recycling represents a viable alternative to energy recovery and complements mechanical processing. In this way, Audi could use fossil resources for longer and thus scale back the procurement of additional fossil resources accordingly. Together with partners from the chemical industry and KIT, Audi now plans to take the next step and research the industrialization of this cycle. Fuel tanks, airbag covers, or radiator grilles, many components in cars are made of plastics. They need to meet stringent safety, heat resistance, and quality requirements. This is why plastic automotive components that are subject to particularly high levels of stress can, to date, only be manufactured from materials of virgin material quality, which mechanically recycled plastics usually do not achieve. Additionally, mixed plastic waste is often not available for mechanical recycling. For this reason, the THINKTANK Industrial Resource Strategies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) launched a pilot project for Chemical Recycling together with Audi at the end of 2020. Within the scope of the project, tests were carried out to determine the extent to which mixed automotive plastic fractions can be fed back into a resource-friendly cycle via Chemical Recycling. Scientists investigated the technical feasibility of the process as well as its cost-effectiveness and its impact on the environment. The results show that Chemical Recycling can be used to process the mixed plastic waste from automotive manufacturing into pyrolysis oil, which can replace petroleum as a chemical raw material. This means materials made from it exhibit the same high quality as virgin materials. This means that plastics made from pyrolysis oil can be reused in automotive manufacturing to produce plastic components that are subject to high levels of stress. Audi is one of the first automakers to test this recycling method in a pilot project with automotive plastic waste. Audi intends to intensify its research together with its partner KIT.

Porsche Calls Suppliers to Switch to Green Energy Porsche is making further efforts to reduce CO2-emissions in its supply chain: the sports car manufacturer is calling for its around 1,300 series suppliers to use exclusively renewable energy in the manufacture of Porsche components as of July. It applies to any contracts awarded for providing production material for new vehicle projects. Suppliers who are unwilling to switch to certified green energy will no longer be considered for contracts with Porsche in the long term. Porsche has set itself an ambitious goal: the company wants to be CO2 -neutral across the entire value chain by 2030. At the moment, the sports car manufacturer’s supply chain is responsible for around 20 percent of Porsche’s total greenhouse gas emissions. This percentage is set to rise to around 40 by 2030 due to the increasing electrification of vehicles. But Porsche is tackling this issue head on: As well as in its supply chain, Porsche is reducing CO2-emissions in its own plants: the production of the Taycan – the first all-electric sports cars made in the Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart – has been carbon neutral since it was launched in 2019. Since 2020, this has been true for all vehicles made at the company’s headquarters, and thus for the 911 and 718 as well. At the start of 2021, the Development Centre in Weissach and the plant in Leipzig, where the Macan and Panamera models are produced, followed suit. This means that all of the large Porsche sites are already CO2-neutral in terms of operations. The company will also be investing more than a billion euros in decarbonisation measures over the next ten years. Porsche reached a milestone with the world premiere of the Taycan Cross Turismo at the beginning of March. The all-rounder among electric sports cars is the world’s first ever vehicle to be carbon neutral throughout its entire service life. More model series are set to follow. And by 2030, the aim is for more than 80 percent of all new vehicles sold to be purely electric or plug-in hybrid models. As early as 2025, at least 50 percent of new vehicles sold are to feature an electric drive. Source - Strategic Research Institute
MAN to Supply Methanol Reactor for Porsche eFuels Pilot in Chile MAN Energy Solutions is to supply the methanol reactor for an eFuels pilot plant currently being built by HIF, an international e-fuels company based in Chile, with the participation of Porsche AG together with Siemens Energy and other project companies near the southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas. The “Haru Oni” pilot project takes advantage of the excellent wind conditions in southern Chile to generate synthetic, climate-neutral fuel - so-called eFuels - with the help of renewable power. By international standards, Chile offers ideal conditions for the production of green hydrogen and synthetic fuels made from it. MAN Energy Solutions at its Deggendorf site has extensive expertise in the manufacture of reactor systems for the production of synthetic fuels as well as numerous references in the field of methanol synthesis. In the first process step, electrolysers use wind power to split water molecules into their basic components, oxygen and hydrogen. The green hydrogen is then combined with CO2 filtered from the air in MAN Energy Solutions' methanol reactor. The result: green methanol, which is then converted into climate-neutral gasoline in a further step. In the pilot phase, the large-scale plant is expected to produce around 130,000 litres of eFuels as early as 2022. In two steps, capacity will be increased to around 55 million litres of eFuels per year by 2024 and to around 550 million litres of eFuels per year by 2026. Porsche plans to use the eFuels initially in Porsche Motorsport vehicles and in the Porsche Experience Centers. The sports car manufacturer is initially investing some EUR 20 million on the project.
Volkswagen to Switch to Low Emission Logistics with LNG Ships Volkswagen is the first automaker to transport most of its new vehicles overseas using low-emission LNG ships. After the first two LNG car carriers entered service in 2020, Volkswagen Group Logistics has now ordered four more ships with dual-fuel engines that can be powered with environmentally friendly liquid gas. They should be traveling the world’s oceans by the end of 2023, serving the North American route between Emden in Germany and Veracruz in Mexico. On the return trip, the LNG ships will transport new vehicles destined for Europe. Soon, six of the nine car carriers crossing the North Atlantic for Volkswagen will be powered by LNG. The further decarbonization of shipping will result in substantial CO2 reductions, with the use of liquid gas enabling Volkswagen to cut the ships’ CO2 emissions by up to 25 percent (tank-to-wake). “In line with the Group’s commitment to e-mobility and climate-neutral production, the LNG fleet used by Logistics represents a major contribution to making Volkswagen net carbon neutral by 2050,” says Simon Motter, Head of Volkswagen Group Logistics. Volkswagen was one of the first car manufacturers to subscribe to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement that aim to limit global warming to significantly less than two degrees by 2050. The Volkswagen Group has therefore committed to e-mobility as well as to the sustainable production and use of new electric vehicles. The company follows the principle of focusing first on the avoidance of CO2 emissions and then on reducing emissions as far as possible. Only unavoidable emissions are offset by climate protection measures. In Germany, the Group has already switched all rail transport with Deutsche Bahn to green electricity and is extending this to transport throughout Europe. On coastal routes, the Group already operates two car carriers with biofuel produced from plant-based residues such as waste oil from the food industry. This has resulted in an 85-percent reduction in CO2emissions (well-to-wake). Exclusive long-term agreements have been signed with shipowners Wallenius Marine and SFL Corporation for the use of the four new car carriers on the North Atlantic route. The state-of-the-art ships are being built in China. They each have a capacity of around 7,000 CEU (car equivalent units), which corresponds to between 4,400 and 4,700 vehicles from the Volkswagen Group’s model mix. The ships will be powered by 13,300 kW dual-fuel engines from MAN Energy Solutions and, in eco-speed mode, will be able to travel at speeds of 15 to 16 knots (28 to 30 km/h). In contrast to other LNG-powered marine engines, the two-stroke engines from MAN Energy Solutions use a high-pressure technology that results in virtually no methane slip, making the ships chartered by Group Logistics especially climate-friendly. The two LNG ships that came into service in 2020 are also equipped with this climate-friendly technology, which was a key factor in choosing these ships. Source - Strategic Research Institute

The JV will operate in Italy as Charging Point Operator by investing in, deploying between 2021 and 2025, owning and operating a high power charging network. The network will count on more than 3,000 charging points of up to 350 kW each across the national territory. The charging network will enable a comfortable ride with electric vehicles from North to South of the Peninsula. The Enel X-Volkswagen joint venture will focus on city centers, main roads used by commuters and main extra-urban roads with the aim to Enhance the uptake of electric vehicles among urban drivers that do not have private parking facilities by relying on a capillary network of charging points which, in just 20 minutes, can charge popular mid-size vehicles such as the Volkswagen ID.302 Reduce range anxiety among EV drivers, especially those commuters who travel longer distances Provide a fast and comfortable charging experience while traveling Drivers of any kind of electric vehicle from all manufacturers can benefit from this initiative by accessing the joint venture’s HPC Network that will also be interoperable to different Mobility Service Providers, including through interoperability platforms. The two parent companies will allocate core expertise in site selection, installation and operation to support the quick ramp-up of the charging points’ network. Moreover, Enel X will support the JV with service contracts to make its e-Mobility technology and expertise available for the start-up phase. Source - Strategic Research Institute
