    Intel steekt miljarden in Europese chipfabrieken: 'Auto is computer op wielen'

    De Amerikaanse chipmaker Intel wil de komende tien jaar tot wel 80 miljard euro steken in het vergroten van de chipproductie in Europa. Intel wil vooral meer chips voor auto's gaan maken, nu automerken nog jaren zullen kampen met chiptekorten.

    "Auto's worden computers op wielen. Jullie hebben ons nodig en wij hebben jullie nodig", zei Intel-topman Pat Gelsinger tijdens de IAA-autobeurs in München.

    Intel wil een deel van de capaciteit van zijn huidige Ierse fabriek inzetten voor chips voor de auto-industrie. Later dit jaar maakt Intel bekend waar in Europa twee nieuwe fabrieken komen te staan. Duitsland en Frankrijk lijken de voornaamste kandidaten. Ook Polen zou een gegadigde zijn, schrijft Reuters.

    Volgens Gelsinger is het project een impuls voor de halfgeleiderindustrie en de hele techsector. Intel zegt hiermee de chiptekorten aan te pakken, waar autofabrikanten sinds de coronapandemie veel last van hebben. Tal van grote autofabrikanten hebben al tijdelijk fabrieken moeten stilleggen door tekorten aan chips.

    Nieuwe, Europese batterijenfabrieken als wapen tegen het Aziatische monopolie

    Duitsland en Frankrijk hebben gezamenlijk een proeffabriek voor accucellen in het zuid-Franse Nersac geopend. Ook beloofden zij miljarden euro’s aan investeringen voor deze industrie, om minder afhankelijk te worden van Aziatische landen, die nu het monopolie hebben in de markt voor batterijen voor elektrische auto's.

    De investeringen brengen ook de eerder geplande accufabriek in het Duitse Kaiserslautern een belangrijke stap dichterbij. De Franse president Emmanuel Macron noemde het Europese project een ‘Airbus van accu’s’, toen hij samen met de Duitse minister van onderzoek Anja Karliczek de toekomstige fabriek van accuproducent Saft in Nersac bezocht.

    Een uur in de file staan terwijl je airco, stoelverwarming, verlichting en muziek aan staan: kan je elektrische auto dat aan? De Britse consumentenorganisatie Which? nam de proef op de som.

    De consumentenwaakhond besloot volgens de Britse krant Daily Mail over te gaan tot een praktijktest nadat het bezorgde berichten had ontvangen van een aantal leden. Zij vreesden dat ze met een deels lege accu snel zouden stranden wanneer ze in een file terechtkomen. De vraag was vooral of ze in de file moesten besparen op stroom door bijvoorbeeld de airco, stoelverwarming of radio uit te schakelen.

    Voor de praktijktest werd een Volkswagen ID4 meer dan een uur stilgezet met de lichten aan. De airconditioning en stoelverwarming stonden op de hoogste stand. Ook werd er muziek gestreamd en een video afgespeeld op twee schermen achterin. De impact op het energiegebruik bleek gering. Na een uur en een kwartier was sprake van een verlies van slechts 2 procent capaciteit, oftewel 13 kilometer rijbereik.

    Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat slechts een heel klein deel van de batterij van de elektrische auto wordt gebruikt om de auto comfortabel te houden. Which? waarschuwde wel dat de test in de zomer werd uitgevoerd en suggereerde dat de rijcapaciteit sneller zou kunnen afnemen als het kouder is, omdat de batterijen dan niet optimaal presteren. De consumentenorganisatie gaat de proef binnenkort herhalen onder winterse omstandigheden.

    The City of Antwerp in Belgium has awarded the extension and development of its public charging network for Electric Vehicles to TotalEnergies. As part of this exclusive contract, the largest to date awarded in the country, TotalEnergies will expand the existing network of the city of Antwerp by installing new EV charge points by 2024, including high power charge. Awarded until 2034 for standard charging points (22 kW) and until 2038 for high power charge points, the contract covers the supply, the installation, the technical and commercial operation of the public charging network. The entire electricity needs of this network will be covered by green electricity produced by TotalEnergies, notably from offshore wind farms, allowing Antwerp’s EV users to benefit from a 100% renewable electricity charge for their vehicles.

    Tesla vernedert Porsche op de Nürburgring

    Een standaard Tesla Model S Plaid heeft de rondetijd voor elektrische auto's op de Nürburgring scherper gesteld door een ronde over het circuit af te leggen in een tijd van 7:30.909. Dat heeft Elon Musk onthuld.

    Tesla begon twee jaar geleden voor het eerst met het testen van de Model S Plaid op het beroemde Duitse circuit om te proberen de recordtijd van de Porsche Taycan te verbeteren. Dat lukte destijds wel, maar het ging toen om niet-officiële metingen. Dat zou nu wel het geval zijn.

    Het EV-record van Porsche werd verreden met een Taycan Turbo, die in 2019 een tijd van 7:42,3 neerzette op het parcours van 20,6 km. Volgens Musk was de Model S Plaid die voor de recordrun werd gebruikt volledig ongewijzigd en rechtstreeks van de fabriek afkomstig.

    Bittere pil voor Porsche
    Een absolute recordtijd is het echter niet, want een handvol auto's met benzinemotor is nog altijd sneller dan de Tesla. De Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S bijvoorbeeld, met een rondetijd van 7:23.009, evenals de Jaguar XE SV Project 8 die 7:18.361 deed over een rondje. Ook de Porsche Panamera Turbo reed vorig jaar een snellere tijd dan de Tesla Model S Plaid.

    Desondanks is het ongetwijfeld een bittere pil voor Porsche, want de Model S Plaid is niet alleen veel goedkoper, ruimer, efficiënter, sneller in een rechte lijn en praktischer, maar nu dus ook sneller op het thuiscircuit van de Duitsers. Het zou ons dan ook niet verbazen als Porsche binnen afzienbare termijn terugkeert met de krachtigere Taycan Turbo S om te proberen Tesla van de troon te stoten.

    Nederland koploper in laadpalen

    In de meeste landen van de Europese Unie is een groot tekort aan oplaadpunten voor elektrische auto’s langs het wegennet. De Europese vereniging van autofabrikanten ACEA waarschuwt dat klimaatdoelen voor de auto-industrie niet gehaald zullen worden, als er niet snel meer laadinfrastructuur bij komt. Uit de ranglijst blijkt dat Nederland met zijn laadinfrastructuur vooroploopt in Europa.

    Volgens cijfers van ACEA zijn er tien landen in de EU waar nog niet één oplader is voor elke 100 kilometer aan belangrijke wegen. Dat zijn onder meer Litouwen, Griekenland, Polen, Letland en Roemenië. Bijna al deze landen hebben een autopark dat voor nog geen 3 procent bestaat uit elektrische modellen. Achttien EU-lidstaten hebben minder dan vijf oplaadpunten per 100 kilometer weg. Slechts vier landen zitten qua oplaadpunten boven de tien per 100 kilometer. In Nederland haalt gemiddeld 47,5 laadpunten, waarmee het Luxemburg, Duitsland en Portugal achter zich laat.

    De Europese Commissie maakte voor de zomer bekend dat de uitstoot van auto’s tegen 2030 zeker 55 procent lager moet liggen dan dit jaar. Dat is meer dan het eerdere streefcijfer van 37,5 procent, dat drie jaar geleden werd vastgesteld. ACEA benadrukt dat Europese autofabrikanten de komende jaren miljoenen elektrische auto’s op de markt moeten brengen om de groene ambities te verwezenlijken.

    ,,Maar consumenten zullen niet kunnen overstappen op emissievrije auto’s als er niet genoeg oplaad- en tankstations zijn langs de wegen waar ze rijden”, waarschuwt ACEA-directeur-generaal Eric-Mark Huitema. ,,Als de inwoners van Griekenland, Litouwen, Polen en Roemenië bijvoorbeeld nog steeds 200 kilometer of meer moeten reizen om een oplader te vinden, kunnen we niet verwachten dat ze bereid zijn een elektrische auto te kopen.”

    De vooruitgang die in een paar West-Europese landen is geboekt, noemt ACEA bemoedigend. Evengoed wijst de organisatie op de ‘erbarmelijke staat van het oplaadnetwerk’ in andere EU-landen. Volgens de organisatie is er ook een rol voor Brussel weggelegd om de klimaatdoelen te halen en de verkoop van elektrische voertuigen en de infrastructuur die daarvoor nodig is, te ondersteunen.

    Region is ramping up production as more automakers go electric.

    With Europe expected to lead the world in electric-car sales for a second straight year, a rush to build a battery-supply chain from scratch is playing out across the region.

    After years of ceding the EV battery business to foreign companies, Europe wants in. Prospective manufacturers are popping up in the Nordic region, Germany, France, the UK and Poland in a transcontinental competition to reduce the dominance of China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. and South Korea's LG Energy Solution.

    Fueled by state support of at least 6.1 billion euros ($7.3 billion) and investment plans totaling 10 times that in just one year, the race is on for a regional champion to emerge.

    The contestants include startups Northvolt in Sweden, Britishvolt and France's Automotive Cells, and powerhouses Tesla and Volkswagen Group.

    BloombergNEF estimates the continent could see its share of global battery production rise to 31 percent by 2030 from just 7 percent last year.

    "We are creating a new industry in Europe; we are creating a completely new ecosystem," Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission vice president overseeing the battery initiative, said in an interview. "The investments are really pouring in."

    Sefcovic estimated the planned investments just for 2019 to be about 60 billion euros ($71 billion), triple that being spent in China. Those eye-watering totals cover the entire supply chain, from materials and cells to assembly and recycling.

    Te veel Chinese fabrikanten van elektrische auto's - media
    Beijing zal consolidatie aanmoedigen.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) China heeft te veel producenten van elektrische auto's en daarom zal een consolidatieslag worden aangemoedigd. Dit zei minister van Industrie, technologie en informatie Xiao Yaqing maandag, aldus persbureau Reuters.

    Daarnaast zei hij dat het oplaadnetwerk in China zal worden verbeterd. Ook moet de verkoop van elektrisch auto's buiten de steden worden aangemoedigd, vindt hij.

    Beijing zal ook met een oplossing komen voor het chiptekort waarmee de fabrikanten kampen.

    Bekende fabrikanten in China zijn Nio, Xpeng en BYD.

    Audi gaat volledig elektrisch en draait die beslissing niet meer terug. Ook niet als in de toekomst blijkt dat synthetische brandstoffen de CO2-uitstoot van brandstofmotoren drastisch kunnen verminderen.

    Dat laat Oliver Hoffmann, ontwikkelingsbaas bij de Duitse fabrikant, weten in een gesprek met Autovisie. Gevraagd naar het mogelijke gebruik van synthetische brandstoffen om in de toekomst toch nog nieuwe verbrandingsmotoren aan te blijven bieden, antwoordt hij resoluut. “Nee, dat is voor ons geen optie. Audi’s toekomst is volledig elektrisch. Er is simpelweg geen betere vorm van aandrijving dan een volledig elektrische. Die is namelijk soepel, efficiënt en ontzettend krachtig, en dat past perfect bij een merk als Audi.”

    Mercedes’ researchbaas vindt synthetische brandstof geen haalbare optie

    Enkel elektrisch vanaf 2033
    De autobouwer kondigde onlangs aan vanaf 2026 enkel nog auto’s met een volledig elektrische aandrijflijn op de markt te brengen. Althans, dan gaat het om volledig nieuw ontwikkelde modellen. Auto’s die dan nog in productie zijn met een verbrandingsmotor of hybride aandrijflijn, zullen ook nog na 2026 van de band rollen. In 2033 zal de laatste Audi met verbrandingsmotor de productielijn verlaten. Vanaf dat moment is écht elke Audi volledig elektrisch.

    Full Electric Volta Zero will be Manufactured in Steyr in Austria

    Leading full-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer Volta Trucks has confirmed that the first Volta Zero vehicles will be manufactured in Steyr in Austria, by Steyr Automotive, formerly MAN Truck and Bus Austria. The announcement follows a wide-ranging competitive tender process with potential suppliers throughout Europe. Steyr Automotive were appointed based on their extensive experience of commercial vehicle manufacturing, existing manufacturing infrastructure and consequent speed to market. This will allow Volta Trucks to confidently start series production in late 2022, following customer trials of Pilot Fleet vehicles that will commence mid-next year.

    The announcement to partner with Steyr Automotive provides Volta Trucks with more than 100 years of manufacturing experience building large commercial vehicles. Over time, the contract will create up to 500 jobs in the region in addition to an estimated 2000 positions within the supply chain.

    The confirmation of the manufacturing partner forms an integral part of the Volta Trucks Road-to-Zero Emissions strategy, released in May 2021. The strategy sees four Volta Zero models ranging from 7.5 to 19 tonnes, with more than 27,000 units built per year by 2025.

    Mobilize is launching its ‘Battery Certificate’, an application that allows owners of Renault and Dacia electric vehicles to create a certificate showing their battery’s remaining energy capacity directly on their smartphone or the internet. The certificate presents numerous advantages

    Increase the residual value and sale price of used electric vehicles

    Accelerate sales of used electric vehicles by reassuring prospective buyers of the battery’s remaining capacity

    The application is available via MY Renault for individual customers and EASY CONNECT for Fleet for corporate clients, while Dacia Spring users can access it via MY Dacia.

    Data used to prepare the certificate are collected via the Battery Management System or are calculated using driving and charging time data. This gives an accurate snapshot of the battery’s state of health, in other words, the battery’s current capacity as a percentage of its initial capacity. For example, if the SOH of a 40 kWh battery is 94%, the residual capacity is 37.6 kWh.

    The certificate is available for Renault Zoe E-TECH 100% Electric, Renault Kangoo E-TECH 100% Electric 33 kWh, and Twingo E-TECH 100% Electric. The service will be extended to future Renault electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well as to Dacia’s EV range.

    As a means of fostering electric mobility uptake, Mobilize has created the Mobilize Charge Pass, a service dedicated to EV charging while already on the road. The MY Renault app can be used to locate the nearest available charging station that is compatible with the specific vehicle, it also displays the price, and shows the best route to get there. Once the vehicle is plugged in, the charging session can be started using the Mobilize Charge Pass, previously paired with a means of payment.

    With just a single app, Mobilize Charge Pass provides access to a network of more than 260,000 charging points in 25 countries throughout Europe.

    Currently available in Germany and Spain, the app will be rolled out elsewhere in the coming months.

    Het Chinese BYD presenteert de Ocean-X-Concept, de volgende stap op basis van zijn nieuwe elektrische E-platform 3.0.

    Anders dan de ‘X’ in z’n naam suggereert, is de Ocean-X geen SUV. Het gaat volgens BYD om een middelgrote, sportieve sedan, al is er helaas maar één afbeelding beschikbaar. De auto is voorzien van BYD’s slimme ‘blade batteries’, die door de cellen slim te verpakken veel efficiënter met ruimte om zouden gaan dan reguliere EV-accu’s. De batterijen zijn ook nog eens geïntegreerd in het koetswerk, voor meer stijfheid.

    BYD belooft een bereik van 1.000 km en stelt dat de Ocean-X in 2,9 seconden van 0 naar 100 knalt. Het merk belooft bovendien een zeer efficiënte auto en stelt dat de concept-car weinig last heeft van laadverliezen, warmte of kou. Voor een eventuele productieversie moet BYD trouwens vermoedelijk nog een nieuwe naam bedenken, want anders komt de nieuwkomer in aanvaring met de eveneens elektrische Fisker Ocean.

    Het nieuwe elektrische E-platform 3.0 is uiteraard modulair. Volgens BYD is het geschikt voor elektrische auto’s ‘van klein tot groot’. Het staat ook tot beschikking van andere fabrikanten, zoals BYD eerder aankondigde. Eerder kregen we al de EA1, een compacte hatchback, voorgeschoteld op deze basis. BYD is trouwens zeker geen ver-van-het-bed-show meer, maar heeft concrete Europese plannen en werkt al aan een marktstrategie voor Nederland. Op Schiphol rijden overigens al elektrische bussen van deze Chinese autogigant rond.

    Tesla krijgt eind dit jaar serieuze concurrentie van Lucid Motors, opgericht door de voormalige hoofdingenieur van de Tesla Model S.

    De Lucid Air wordt waarschijnlijk meteen de belangrijkste concurrent van de Model S.
    Business Insider vergelijkt de twee modellen op prijs, bereik, performance en interieur.

    Klassieke autofabrikanten hebben de achtervolging ingezet op Tesla. Maar vergeet de ambitieuze startups niet die ook een stukje willen veroveren van de snel groeiende markt voor elektrische auto’s.

    Voormalig hoofdontwerper Peter Rawlinson van Tesla richtte Lucid Motors op en brengt binnenkort zijn eerste auto op de markt: de Air.

    Met zijn goede prestaties, grote bereik, mooie ontwerp en een interieur vol techsnufjes heeft de Lucid Air het nodige in huis om zich met Tesla te meten.

    Het duurste model, de Air Dream, komt eind dit jaar op de markt en wordt later gevolgd door goedkopere Air-modellen.

    Hieronder bespreken we de overeenkomsten en verschillen tussen de Lucid Air en Tesla Model S.

    Bereik
    De actieradius is voor veel potentiële kopers van een elektrische auto de belangrijkste overweging en op dat gebied heeft Lucid sterke papieren.

    De Tesla Model S Long Range is op dit moment de elektrische auto met de grootste actieradius: 651 kilometer volgens de Amerikaanse toezichthouder EPA.

    Lucid Motors claimt dat de Air Dream een bereik heeft van meer dan 800 kilometer. Dat is fors meer dan Tesla en andere fabrikanten bieden.

    En het lijkt geen bluf te zijn, want de Air Grand Touring heeft volgens de officiële EPA-meting een actieradius van 832 kilometer. Lucid zegt dat het basismodel van de Air Pure een bereik van 653 kilometer zal krijgen.

    Prijs
    Lucid neemt de aanpak van Tesla over door te beginnen met een duur topmodel en dan langzaam af te dalen naar meer betaalbare modellen.

    De Air Dream is in de voorverkoop al uitverkocht tegen een prijs van 169.000 dollar in de Verenigde Staten. Ter vergelijking: het snelste en beste model van Tesla, de Model S, heeft een vanafprijs van 130.000 dollar.

    De basisprijs van een Lucid Air zal 77.400 dollar in de Verenigde Staten worden, terwijl Model S momenteel 89.990 dollar kost.

    En er komen nog twee Air-modellen op de markt: een Touring-versie van 95.000 dollar en een Grand Touring-model van 139.000 dollar.

    Prestaties
    De sportiefste Air zal de Dream Performance zijn, die 1.111 pk belooft en in 2,5 seconden optrekt van 0 naar 100 kilometer per uur. De Dream Range zag slechts 933 pk hebben en in 2,7 seconden van 0 naar 100 kilometer per uur optrekken.

    De beide Dream-modellen zijn ongelooflijk snel en krachtig. Maar ze presteren niet beter dan Model S Plaid van Tesla, die met 1.020 pk in ongeveer 2 seconden op kan trekken van 0 naar 100 kilometer per uur. Het basismodel Model S Long Range is zeker ook geen lachertje en trekt in 3,1 seconden op naar 100 kilometer per uur.

    Ook de rest van de Air-modellen heeft volgens Lucid Motors de nodige pk’s, maar minder dan de topmodellen: 480 pk voor de Pure, 620 pk voor de Touring en 800 pk voor de Grand Touring. Alle Airs zullen zijn uitgerust met all-wheel drive, net als alle Model S-auto’s.

    Interieur
    De Air en Model S hebben allebei minimalistische interieurs vol met schermen. Maar Lucid heeft voor een iets andere aanpak gekozen.

    De Tesla Model S was pionier met een enorm scherm in de auto en heeft een gigantische centraal touchscreen waarmee de meeste aspecten van de auto bediend kunnen worden. Er is ook een kleiner scherm voor de bestuurder en een touchscreen bij de stoel daarnaast voor meerijdende passagiers.

    De Air heeft een gebogen scherm van 35 inch voor de bestuurder en een kleiner touchscreen bij het midden van het dashboard. The Air heeft ook een paar fysieke bedieningsknoppen voor de temperatuur in de auto.

    SG to Start Enabling Works on Northumberland site of Britishvolt

    UK’s foremost investor in lithium-ion battery cell technologies and associated R&D Britishvolt has instructed ISG to commence enabling works on the UK’s premier Gigaplant site in Cambois in Northumberland. ISG anticipates that will start in late autumn or early winter. This initial phase will see the site cleared and preparatory work carried out for the services and infrastructure that will support construction activity.

    The development is a major boon for Northumberland, and indeed the country, and will bring around 3,000 direct highly skilled jobs and another 5,000+ in the associated supply chains.

    Britishvolt is on target to manufacture some of the world’s most sustainable, low carbon battery cells on the site of the former Blyth Power Station coal stocking yard located in Cambois, Northumberland. The project will be built in three phases each of 10GWh to a total capacity of 30GWh by end-2027 onwards. This allows the business to keep on top of any technological advancements. Once at full capacity, the Gigaplant will have a production capability equating to approximately enough cells for around 300,000 electric vehicle battery packs per year, intended primarily for the automotive industry.

    Halewood Gets into Spirit of Electric with Kia

    Beverages firm Halewood Artisanal Spirits PLC has taken delivery of 25 Kia e-Niro from Bolton Kia to help transition its fleet to electric power. Halewood chose the e-Niro ‘2’ Long Range, which was introduced in March this year and offers up to 282-miles (WLTP combined) or 382-miles (WLTP city) range from a single charge of its 64kWh battery. This e-Niro model also benefits from the high-power 201bhp (150kW) electric motor that top specification e-Niros are equipped with, while also offering an on-the-road starting price of GBP 34,945. This qualifies for the UK Government Plug-in Car Grant, reducing the price by a further GBP 2,500.

    The ‘2’ Long Range also offers the same large cabin and spacious boot as other e-Niro models, with generous space for five occupants and 451 litres of cargo capacity.

    Halewood Artisanal Spirits is one of the UK’s leading independent distillers, producing an award-winning range of spirits. Still family-owned, Halewood’s brands are distributed in 75 countries, with a turnover of £400m+ and 950+ employees. The company plans for 90 per cent of its fleet to have transitioned to electric power this month. An order for a further six e-Niro and three of Kia’s latest electric car, the EV6, has been placed bringing the total number of e-Niro to 31. The EV6 electric cars, which are capable of 10-80 per cent charge in just 18 minutes, will be used by the firm’s senior management.

    A Tesla co-founder aims to build an entire U.S. battery industry

    J.B. Straubel's broader goal is to move a huge chunk of the battery-component industry from Asia to the U.S. His company also plans to build a similar operation in Europe by 2023.

    Redwood Materials, the battery recycling company created by Tesla co-founder J.B. Straubel, has been keeping a big secret: It isn’t really a recycling company.

    Sure, Redwood has risen quickly to become the biggest lithium-ion battery recycler in the U.S. But Straubel didn’t leave Tesla in 2019 just to clean out America’s junk drawers. His broader goal, described to Bloomberg for the first time, is to move a huge chunk of the battery-component industry from Asia to the U.S.

    “It’s both inspiring and terrifying to see so many nations and car companies announcing their shift to electric vehicles,” Straubel said. “But there’s a massive gap in what needs to happen.”

    To fill that gap, Straubel has set out to build one of the largest battery materials factories in the world.

    Electric vehicles make up just 4 percent of passenger vehicle sales today, but the big flip is coming. At least 15 countries and 31 cities have announced timelines to entirely phase out sales of internal combustion vehicles, beginning with Norway in 2025. Last month, President Joe Biden signed an executive order targeting half of U.S. auto sales to be electric by 2030. General Motors, the biggest U.S. automaker, has pledged to electrify all of its vehicles by 2035.

    These EV promises are predicated on the economic force of falling battery prices. Every time the global supply of batteries doubles, the price of making them drops about 18 percent, according to data tracked by BloombergNEF. It’s a learning curve driven by large investments in battery manufacturing like Tesla’s battery Gigafactory in Nevada. There’s one glaring exception to this rule: battery materials.

    China accounts for more than 80 percent of global production of battery components and materials, BNEF data show. While planned new battery factories in the U.S. and Europe will help challenge Asia’s dominant role, they’ll remain dependent on the region without huge new investments in basic battery components.

    Ask the Experts: Is China winning the Electric Vehicle race?

    t’s difficult to imagine how anyone could catch up with China in the electric vehicle (EV) race. After a decade of focused planning, record-breaking investment, and a slew of local and central government incentives, China has built a seemingly insurmountable lead. The country is now home to nearly five million new energy vehicles (NEVs, which includes battery electrics, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cell vehicles), more than half the world’s total.

    China also accounts for 90 percent of the world’s electric buses and trucks, and virtually all of its electric two- and three-wheelers. It has installed over 800,000 public charging stations, almost twice as many as the rest of the world. China produced 44 percent of the world’s electric vehicles over the last decade, and is building new factories at an astonishing rate. The country also controls the global EV battery supply chain, including 80 percent of the world’s raw material refining and 60 percent of its battery component manufacturing.

    Nearly 500 Chinese EV makers are racing to become the next Tesla. Models range from the top-selling $4200 Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, to the premium NIO ET7 sedan, which has an innovative battery-swap system and a 150 kWh solid-state battery with a remarkable 1,000 km driving range.

    Yet China’s EV sector faces a number of challenges going forward. The country has set a target for NEV sales to increase four-fold by 2025, reaching 20 percent of all new car sales. The government, however, is planning to phase out direct EV subsidies in 2022, and the impact on sales remains to be seen. It will be challenging in any case for EVs to penetrate beyond China’s major cities without strong government support, including expansion of the country’s already vast public EV charging network.

    The electric vehicle sector itself is heading towards a major period of consolidation, with hundreds of weaker companies likely to fall by the wayside. Even the largest EV firms face a new risk: the government crackdown on companies that collect large amounts of consumer data, such as Didi Chuxing, the world’s largest ride-hailing service. New rules requiring government approval of data exports may jeopardize the overseas expansion plans of Chinese intelligent vehicle manufacturers.

    On a broader level, in the absence of strong near-term climate targets (China currently aims to peak CO2 emissions at an unspecified level before 2030 and reach net-zero CO2 emissions around 2060), the country’s EV momentum could slow due to short-term economic concerns. Last year, the government relaxed some restrictions on conventional vehicles in order to boost sales in what it considers a pillar industry.

    Europe views the EV transition as key to its push to become climate neutral by 2050 – an approach that is starting to pay off. New EU fleet-wide CO2 emission reduction targets, along with generous subsidies from many countries, led to a world-record 1.4 million EV sales in Europe last year. The EU’s ambitious blueprint for reaching net zero, announced last month, includes a proposal to effectively eliminate the sale of new gas and diesel-powered vehicles beginning in 2035. If approved, this move could be a game-changer.

    The United States is racing to catch up, but lags far behind. President Biden aims to change that, calling for half of all automobile sales to be EVs by 2035, and proposing a series of measures to restore US leadership in EV manufacturing, supply chains, and innovation.

    The real EV race, however, is not among nations; it’s a race against time, as the new “code red for humanity” report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change makes unequivocally clear. Despite recent progress, electric cars still comprise only 1 percent of the global automobile stock. Ambitious targets are crucial to mobilize the necessary investments, not just in EV production and charging infrastructure, but in battery recycling, the ethical and sustainable sourcing of critical minerals at scale, and innovative R&D. Rapid transformation of our approach to mobility and a decarbonized power sector are also essential.

    To achieve these goals and avert climate catastrophe requires decisive actions by all nations to strengthen their climate commitments at the upcoming COP26 climate negotiations in Glasgow. The race is for our future.
