Vale settles iron ore benchmark prices with ArcelorMittal Brazilian mining giant Vale has concluded negotiations on iron ore and pellet prices for 2009 with ArcelorMittal in the first settlement this year in the European market, Steel Business Briefing learns from the miner. The world’s largest steelmaker has settled for the same percentage price decreases as those already agreed by many Asian mills. The deal will put more pressure on China to accept the benchmark settlement or turn increasingly to the spot market. In the agreement with ArcelorMittal, Vale’s prices for fines decrease by 28.2% and for lump ore by 44.47% from the 2008 benchmark values. Therefore, the new reference prices per dry metric tonne unit (dmtu) FOB are $0.9651 for Southern and Southeastern System fines (SSF), $1.0095 for Carajás sinter feed (SFCJ), and $1.0962 for Southern System lump. The pellet price falls by 48.3% relative to 2008 and the new reference prices per dmtu are $1.1384 for blast furnace pellets and $1.2523 for direct reduction pellets. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © Steel Business Briefing 2009.

Preview of Today's Top Article UK stockists cautiously optimistic about European industry The mood remained one of cautious optimism at a gathering of the UK's North East Association of Steel Stockholders (NEASS) attended by Steel Business Briefing last week. NEASS members do not underestimate the challenges facing the steel industry. European and UK mills cannot continue to produce at low capacity utilisation rates, which is expensive and can damage machinery. Yet weak demand means increased output could saturate the market. European summer is likely to be slow with some mills closing for one or two months to prevent large inventory build-ups. to read more subscribe here TODAY'S TOP SBB HEADLINES Coil prices in US, Turkey surge up, says The Steel Index Xstrata-Anglo may face EU opposition on met coal fears CIS longs export market strengthens a little Brazil's pig iron export prices expected to hit US$300/t fob Despite drop, iron ore prices remain high New 'World Steel Exchange' to try scrap futures first Europe Turkish Competition Authority fines Erdemir Billet offers to Turkey rise, push rebar prices higher Polish steelmaker reports stronger demand, expands exports UK stockists cautiously optimistic about European industry Corus IJmuiden short-time work support ending Tyrol stockist returns to family ownership as Zlomrex sells Belgian coil processor to open service centre in Poland Spanish steel exports continue to grow Spanish steelmaker Sidenor to extend lay-offs Duferco-NLMK JV sees hard 2009, continues investments Flat steel imports into EU-15 plunge in April Voestalpine distances itself from ‘reshuffle’ rumours German cold rollers may reach 60% of 2008’s output New Vienna service centre operator sees market stabilising Asia China reduces export tax on light sections Taigang works towards energy self-sufficiency Posco, Korea Eximbank sign MoU for overseas projects Shagang puts up rebar and wire rod prices Indian mills hike flat-rolled prices for June JFE decides to reline halted Kurashiki blast furnace CISA attacks companies joining Australian iron ore bids Posco commissions a new coil centre in Wuhu Angang cuts sulphur dioxide emissions North America US steelmakers' streak of production increases ends Ameristeel's term loan change could cost up to $41.5m Timken commissions Ohio bar mill expansion Latin America Venezuelan HBI export prices increase in June CSN reschedules its longs production strategy Chile's Huachipato cuts 200 jobs Gerdau switches to larger BF at Açominas works in July Middle East & Africa Turkish rebar exports plan to fight Israeli import 'tax' Israeli traders hope budget will boost steel demand Scrap & Raw Materials Brazil scrap prices stable, but competition growing Mechel in vanguard as capacities brought back on stream Alpha Natural/Foundation Coal merger moving forward Turkish mills book more scrap imports, prices rise Scrap imports kept on increasing in May in Pakistan Brazilian iron ore exports down 35% Capesize rates continue to rise, driven by iron ore bookings Chinese manganese offer prices rise Chinese FeSi prices down More Chinese mills use index to import iron ore Iron ore benchmark clock ticking for China Stainless steel & Ferro-alloys Taiwanese stainless producers raise prices again Asian stainless prices rise another $100/t Tubes & Pipes Marcegaglia says growth is ahead for steel's mid-size firms Brazilian pipe maker TSA aims to widen its market reach India's JSW foresees exports from US subsidiary rising
Preview of Today's Top Article Dumping case on wire may follow EU's duty on rod imports By confirming the anti-dumping duty on imports of wire rod from China (see other story), the EU Commission has missed the point, a large European wire rod buyer comments to Steel Business Briefing. The major problem is not wire rod from China, he says, but imports of some Chinese finished products like welding wire. China has a 600,000 tonnes/year overcapacity of welding wire, and this is being dumped into the North American and European markets, the rod buyer claims. to read more subscribe here TODAY'S TOP SBB HEADLINES Russian mills may increase output on higher coil demand EU imposes 24% dumping duty on Chinese wire rod Plate and rebar prices steady, The Steel Index reports Chinese H-beam prices soar on mill price increases World Steel Association steps up CO2 data collection ArcelorMittal Tubarão starts up expanded HRC operation Some question sustainability of recent US sheet price hikes US files WTO complaint against Chinese export restraints Europe Dumping case on wire may follow EU's duty on rod imports Turkish longs output recovers as home demand revives Turkish domestic rebar prices rise on costlier billets Turkish flat crude steel production edged up in May Böhler to streamline international distribution network ArcelorMittal Ostrava asks government to subsidise wages EU joins US in requesting WTO consultations with China CMC's international mills segment reports Q3 operating loss Evraz ramps up steel production in Russia Italian flats output down nearly 50% y-o-y in April Asia India unperturbed by Thai AD deadline Laigang H-beam demand sees strong rail demand Korean prices for shipbuilding angles to drop in Q3 SE Asian traders brace for non-performance of HRC contracts Osaka Steel starts making I-beams for Australia's OneSteel Dongil Steel exporting bars to Myanmar Hunan end-users buying more locally-produced steel North America US imports fall below 1m tonnes/month CME Group's US HRC futures contract price dips for June Mexican flats prices fall again in June Commercial Metals reports loss, sees modest recovery Latin America Colombian construction activity continues decline YTD Brazilian rebar output, apparent consumption drop ThyssenKrupp names new chief for Brazil slab project Brazilian rebar consumption recovers strength in June Middle East & Africa UAE flats import prices rising faster than demand Scrap & Raw Materials Brazilian industrial scrap prices up 10-15% Voestalpine secures more coal from Czech Republic CMC recycling reports $7m operating loss Anglo rejection of Xstrata leaves door open for Vale Fortescue works with Aquila on new Pilbara port Iron ore pellet output dips, outlook 'tough' Labour strikes hit raw materials handling at Indian ports Sinosteel acts as iron ore import agent for 10m t in Jan-May China may cut number of iron ore traders by 30% China approves Angang stake in WA magnetite venture China's Wisco bids for stake in Brazilian miner MMX Stainless steel & Ferro-alloys Rising nickel price pushes up European stainless surcharges Chinese 304 stainless coil prices retreat China ferro-chrome import prices up, offer prices surge Tubes & Pipes US OCTG imports still relatively strong as China rebounds Romanian plants plan production stoppage in August Saudi Steel Pipe floats shares to fund expansion plans Chinese pipe makers eye power grid expansion
Preview of Today's Top Article European industry may be ripe for consolidation The European steel industry is ripe for consolidation but potential acquirers may be deterred by tough conditions, analysts and market participants tell Steel Business Briefing. Preview of Today's Top Article EU economic indicators rise, but steel lags trend The European Union’s monthly economic sentiment indicator (ESI) increased again in June for the third month in a row. Its business climate indicator (BCI) for the euro area also increased marginally, Steel Business Briefing learns from latest reports on the EU web site. However, both indicators remain far below the previous historical lows recorded in 1992-93. Preview of Today's Top Article Vehicle production continues to fall in Spain Spanish vehicle production saw a 37.27% fall during the first five months of the year, compared to the same period in 2008, Steel Business Briefing learns from Spanish automotive manufacturers’ association Anfac. In January-May 821,408 units were produced, while May’s output fell by 31.13%. Passenger car output, which accounts for the greatest volume of production, saw a smaller decrease of 30.68% in January-May, and it is possible that in the coming months this fall will decelerate as a result of the positive effects of incentive schemes applied in countries where Spanish vehicles are sold. to read more subscribe here TODAY'S TOP SBB HEADLINES Gerdau Ameristeel raising output at Texas rod mill Turkish merchant bar prices look to reflect costlier billet World consumption fell last year for first time since 1998 Hyundai Steel to lift rebar export prices by $50/t Most coil prices rising, led by US: The Steel Index Brazilian scrap processors may face margin crunch Europe Estar's Zlatoust restarts two rolling mills UK strip prices firm on supply constraints Erdemir raises coil and plate prices by $30/t Kremikovtzi's administrator submits recovery plan Vehicle production continues to fall in Spain Production at Italy’s ABS improves in June/July Asia Korea's Dongbu to inaugurate new hot strip mill Indian steel ministry aims to hasten project approvals Chinese domestic CRC prices fall Strikes flare at Indian port again Shanxi Haixin Steel starts new billet caster China shocked at US anti-dumping cases Shougang to build coil centre in Guangdong Dongkuk withdraws from long-stalled Brazil slab project Japan’s flat rolled stocks continue decreasing Japan forecasts demand recovery in July-September quarter New site for Tata's Vietnam flat steel project North America Granite City restart slated to begin today: union officials Cascade Steel operating loss drags down parent Latin America Colombian HRC import prices fall Usiminas: problem reduces output at Cubatão BF No 1 Middle East & Africa UAE flats prices rise, supply tight Egyptian rebar prices decline on high stocks ArcelorMittal South Africa puts expansion plan on hold Scrap & Raw Materials Cliffs expanding Western Australia mining project Chilean iron ore output shows signs of recovery in May Schnitzer Steel's recycling segment reports $6m profit Scrap demand remains weak in Egypt, prices fall Bulk freight rates stall on impasse in iron ore price talks China iron ore price deadline passes with no deal Tokyo Steel lifts scrap purchase prices Stainless steel & Ferro-alloys Optimism on Italian stainless, prices might go up US stainless pipe makers hiking prices Yusco raises export stainless prices by $80-150/t Taiyuan raises domestic stainless prices by RMB 300/t Tubes & Pipes German pipe mill files for insolvency Brazilian small diameter tube prices fall 4% for July Hollow section prices rise in UAE on increased strip costs Personalise your news

They thus are equivalent to three to four months of sales, with destocking set to go into Q3, it adds (see separate article). Preview of Today's Top Article ArcelorMittal plans August price rise for longs in Europe ArcelorMittal is to raise prices for long products made at its works in Europe. It will add €20-30/tonne for all new bookings from August. The increase covers sections, merchant bar, rebar and wire rod. For products that are subject to a scrap surcharge, this will be included in the €20-30/t increase. The exact amount of increase is depending on product and region. Evraz will use the proceeds to “refinance existing debt and for general corporate purposes,” it says in a statement seen by Steel Business Briefing. Lanebrook, a 77.6% shareholder in Evraz, says it intends to subscribe for approximately $400m of the offering, split equally between the bond and equity offerings, with the final split to be determined at the time of pricing. SBB Global Market Outlook- July 2009 Producers pushing up flats prices, but longer-term demand may not be firm enough Full Daily Briefing subscribers have just received the latest issue of the SBB Global Market Outlook. In this month's issue I assess the results of the improved demand for flat products in most regions. I look at the likely future market trends for flat and long products until Q4 globally, and whether destocking has finished. In US and Europe, long products pricing has been weaker but Asian price levels for all products are increasing strongly. I also look at May's production figures that showed global output to have increased by around 6.5 million tonnes last month. China’s output increased again, and production in Europe and US increased visibly from their recent low levels. Generally, demand improved during June, but holiday seasons may mean this will not continue, and I assess prices across the key regions.
