SanDisk CEO sees uncertainties with EUV Mark LaPedus EE Times (08/14/2008 12:52 PM EDT) SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- NAND flash technology is expected to scale down to the 20-nm node, but there are some questions beyond that process, due in part to the uncertainties with extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, according to the top executive at SanDisk Corp. At present, NAND vendors are shipping 40-nm-like parts, which are being processed via 193-nm immersion lithography tools. Suppliers of 193-nm immersion lithography equipment have been able to ramp up their tools faster than expected. After some initial concerns, the immersion lithography ramp "was like a walk in the park," said Eli Harari, chairman and chief executive of SanDisk, during a presentation at the Flash Memory Summit here. SanDisk and its NAND flash partner, Toshiba Corp., are ramping up leading-edge parts in various fabs in Japan. With immersion, NAND flash vendors are expected to process wafers down to the 32-nm node. This is said to be the theoretical limit for 193-nm immersion tools, even with double-patterning techniques. "Unfortunately for ASML and Nikon, (immersion) is running out of steam," he said, referring to tool suppliers ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands and Nikon Corp. of Japan. Canon Inc. of Japan has also entered the 193-nm immersion fray. Meanwhile, ASML and Nikon are separately developing EUV tools as well. Beyond that, the IC industry is bracing for the EUV era. The problem is that EUV has been hit with delays, lack of power sources and cost issues. Regarding the feasibility of EUV, "unfortunately, we don't know" about the throughput and cost issues, Harari said. But in a brief interview after his presentation, Harari appeared to be more confident about EUV, saying the power sources and other technologies are making progress. He also dropped hints that the IC industry is exerting pressure on ASML and Nikon to develop and deliver EUV for production fabs. "They had better be ready," he added.www.eetimes.com/news/semi/rss/showArt...
SanDisk CEO tips rewriteable 3-D memory Mark LaPedus EE Times (08/14/2008 12:57 PM EDT) SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- At the Flash Memory Summit, SanDisk Corp.'s top executive provided more details about its efforts to devise a rewriteable 3-D memory device--a technology that could replace today's flash parts. SanDisk is developing the technology with its NAND flash partner, Toshiba Corp. The companies recently announced plans to devise rewriteable 3-D memory. This appears to advance SanDisk's one-time programmable 3-D technology, which was obtained through the acquisition of Matrix Semiconductor Inc. in 2005. Matrix had been developing a one-time programmable antifuse-based memory. In a brief interview, Eli Harari, chairman and chief executive of SanDisk, said the company hopes to move beyond the fuse-based technology. Instead, SanDisk is looking to devise ''3-D diode memory arrays,'' which are based on a 4F2 architecture, he said during a presentation. The arrays would make use of a switching element, which could be in the form of phase-change memory or resistive RAM (RRAM), he said. The technology would be ideal for the 32-nm ''half-pitch'' node, he said. "Flash and 3-D is the place to be in the coming decade,'' he added. Toshiba and others have also announced various 3-D device technologies as well.www.eetimes.com/news/semi/rss/showArt...
Makkelijk praten die Harari, "they had better be ready" .

Video: Analyst gives outlook for SSDs, NAND Mark LaPedus EE Times (08/14/2008 7:45 PM EDT) SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- There is a lot of hype surrounding solid-state disks (SSDs) these days. Is it for real or not? What is the outlook for SSDs? And what about NAND flash, which is in the midst of a major downturn. In a video, Mark LaPedus, semiconductor editor from EE Times, discussed those issues with Jim Handy, an analyst with Objective Analysis (Los Gatos, Calif.). SSDs will see rapid adoption in enterprise servers and storage systems in the near term, according to a study by the firm. ''SSDs are poised for explosive growth in the enterprise, with unit shipments seeing a 151 percent average annual growth through 2013,'' he said. Surprising spike in PC chip shipments, report shows By Benjamin Pimentel, MarketWatch Last update: 11:40 a.m. EDT Aug. 15, 2008 SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Personal computer chip shipments rose in the second quarter, an unusual trend in what is typically the slowest period of the year, according to International Data Corp. Worldwide shipments grew 3.1% from the first quarter, and 16.1% from the year-earlier period, IDC said. ... lees verder:www.marketwatch.com/news/story/surpri...

Lees dit bevestigende bericht: IBM Builds World's Smallest SRAM Memory Cellwww-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelea...
Had ht ook al gelezen novital; Asml the greatest in the smallest etches.
Niet iedereen is pessimistisch wat betreft ASML. Ook nu ziet men weer kansen. Economist Likes Chip & Multimedia Stocks Posted By:JeeYeon Park Sectors:Technology | Semiconductors Companies:ASML Holding N.V. Geert-Jan Nikken at Rabobank said investors should look into buying shares in European semiconductors and multimedia companies. Recommendations: ASML -- “If you take a look at the stock from a technical perspective, I think there’s still more upside room for the stock.” ...www.cnbc.com/id/26314445/site/1408154...
Semiconductors Are Finding Big Growth Overseas by: Zacks.com posted on: August 21, 2008 Zacks senior semiconductor industry analyst Abdul Saleh was on hand recently to give us his updated viewpoint of this sector. He even told us what his top three semi Buy-recommended stocks are at this time. What’s new in the semiconductor industry lately? With a slowdown in the domestic economy, the chip companies are looking globally -- notably Russia, India, China and South America -- for growth, where the demand for technology is growing at a healthy 30-40% clip. In fact, Intel’s (INTC) CEO Craig Barrett was interviewed recently on this subject and reiterated this viewpoint. The Street has not bought this thesis as yet, but if the numbers turn out to be what the companies are projecting, it may be positive for investors. Also, we got some exposure with the media in this sector -- I, myself did an IBD interview on Atheros (ATHR) recently -- and our projections have been reasonably correct so far. My overall recommendation for the sector has also been quite accurate, with a couple of exceptions, of course. Can we start by hearing a little about some of the more heavily traded semi companies first? Certainly. Among companies in my coverage, this would be referring to two companies: Broadcom (BRCM) and LSI Corp. (LSI). ...

Da!
