Reuters reported that Poland's utilities will build wind farms with record 500 MWs of installed power in 2011. Mr Krzysztof Prasalka head of the country's wind energy lobby PSEW said that "Based on the information from investors, we estimate that this year it will be at least 500 MWs of wind based power. This is still very little given Poland's potential." In 2010, PSEW estimates some 460 MWs of wind farms were built in Poland. It may be noted that Poland is in over 90% dependent on coal as its energy source and struggles to meet the EU's strict environment criteria with wind farms, biomass and nuclear energy seen as most serious alternatives to coal. In the first quarter of 2011, wind based energy production in Poland more than doubled to 644 giga watt hours. (Sourced from www.reuters.com)
It is reported that a GBP 38 million wind turbine tower factory is being opened in Mabey Bridge in Chepstow in South Wales in UK. The wind turbine tower facility is creating 240 jobs and has a capacity for 300 towers per year. It is said to be the only wind turbine tower factory in the UK at the moment. The facility has already entered a preferred supplier agreement with REpower, and is producing 9 steel wind turbine towers for the German wind giant. Mr Rick Eggleston MD of REpower UK said that "We have been consistently impressed with the high quality of product at Mabey Bridge. Local procurement of the towers from a reliable UK manufacturer makes sense. REpower and Mabey Bridge will continue to have a productive and positive relationship as we both build our businesses in the UK.” Mr Maria McCaffery CEO of Renewable UK said that "This is an exciting landmark for the low carbon economy as it heralds the return of turbine manufacture to these shores. Britain is the windiest country in Europe and it rightly has ambitious plans to deliver a low carbon economy by 2020. Mabey Bridge's new plant will play a major role in that."
Spain to encourage EUR 62.8bn investment in green energy in 2011-2020 - report 13 May 2011 (c) 2011 AII Data Processing Ltd. All Rights Reserved. (ADPnews) - May 13, 2011 - The Spanish Government will target investments worth EUR 62.8 billion (USD 89.759bn) in renewable energy for 2011-2020, according to a draft of its renewable energy plan cited by news agency Europa Press yesterday. A total EUR 55.743 billion will go for power generation, EUR 6.279 billion for heating and EUR 775 million for biofuels. The costs of the new plan will amount to EUR 20.013 billion, but the economic benefits are calculated at EUR 25.954 billion, according to the draft. The plan is seen to save EUR 15.081 billion gas imports, EUR 6.428 billion diesel oil imports, EUR 878 million petrol consumption and EUR 3.567 billion in CO2 emissions. Moreover, the new investments will create 84,414 jobs in 2011-2020. The government has calculated that the sector is currently giving direct jobs to 70,000 people and indirect jobs to another 45,000. Thus, in 2020, the green energy sector in Spain might employ 200,000 people. The renewable energy sources are forecast to cover around 40% of the energy consumption in Spain at the end of the period. Wind energy installed capacity is seen to surge to 35,000 MW in 2020 from 20,744 MW in 2010, while the capacity of photovoltaic plants is expected to hit 7,250 MW, up from 3,787 MW. German Shift to Renewable Energy to Place Offshore Wind Ahead of Onshore Germany’s shift to renewable energy from nuclear power may focus on offshore wind parks over land- based turbines as the government seeks to limit the cost of aid on consumers and get utilities to build larger facilities. Offshore wind park owners will see their guaranteed above- market rates decrease starting in 2018, three years later than the government had planned, the Environment Ministry said in a draft law published today on its website. Onshore turbine operators will see the aid they receive slide by an additional 1.5 percent in 2012, according to the document. Germany plans to exit nuclear over the course of the next decade after the disaster at reactors in Japan stoked safety concerns and helped lose Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party votes. The government is balancing aid for energy from solar panels and wind turbines with the cost for citizens and industrial users, who will finance the roll-out through power bills. Subsidies for onshore and solar power fed into the grid are currently adjusted at yearly or bi-yearly intervals to reflect the cost of generating electricity with the technology. Germany has 27.2 gigawatts of onshore turbines, according to the BWE German Wind Energy Association. EnBW Energie Baden- Wuerttemberg AG’s 48.3-megawatt Baltic 1, the first commercial offshore wind park, started in May, according to the company. ‘Window Dressing’ “The changes in the degression are nothing but window dressing and cosmetic to pacify the opposition and state governments,” the BWE said today on its website. “If the law goes through the upper and lower houses of parliament in this form, it will slow onshore wind energy development.” The German government has said utilities could build 20 gigawatts to 25 gigawatts of offshore wind turbines by 2030. In comparison, the country’s 17 nuclear reactors have a combined capacity of 20.7 gigawatts. An Environment Ministry plan to keep a 2 euro cent per kilowatt-hour “sprinter” bonus for utilities with offshore wind parks up and running by 2015 “strengthens” investment security, said Windenergie-Agentur Bremerhaven/Bremen. The group, which represents northern German companies in the wind energy industry, said it also supports the option for turbine operators to receive more aid up front, according to an e-mailed statement today. The Environment Ministry’s draft reiterates a call it made last month for aid to the renewable energy sector not to exceed 3.5 euro-cents a kilowatt-hour in consumer power bills. The government wants to boost renewable energy output to 35 percent in 2020 from 17 percent last year. The draft, and nine other energy bills approved by Cabinet today, will go to the lower house of parliament for a first reading on June 9. The upper house, or Bundesrat, will vote on the energy plans on July 8, the last day it meets before the summer recess. SeaEnergy Falls 44% in London After Agreement to Sell Wind Unit to Repsol By Sally Bakewell - Jun 6, 2011 7:04 PM GMT+0200 SeaEnergy Plc (SEA) fell the most in seven years after the Aberdeen-based renewable energy company agreed to sell its offshore wind unit to Repsol YPF SA (REP), Spain’s largest oil company, for about 50 million pounds ($82 million). SeaEnergy shares tumbled 44 percent on London’s AIM market to 39.25 pence (64 cents), the biggest decline since March 2004. Today’s drop pared gains by SeaEnergy this year to 67 percent. SeaEnergy will earn proceeds of 29.1 million pounds after deal costs and following repayment of 6.9 million pounds of loans from LC Capital Master Fund Ltd. and EDP Renovaveis SA (EDPR), SeaEnergy Chairman Stephen Remp said in a phone interview. “The market thought the sale of the SERL business would be much higher than what they actually achieved,” Gurpreet Gujral, a clean-technology equity analyst at Ambrian Capital Plc, said by telephone. Kate Hill, a spokeswoman for SeaEnergy, said “there may have been some profit-taking.” The transaction will give Madrid-based Repsol entry into the U.K. offshore wind market, the world’s largest, as Britain targets 13 gigawatts of sea-based wind farms by 2020 to help meet European renewable-energy goals. SeaEnergy Renewables, the unit being sold, has stakes in three offshore wind projects being developed in Scotland. Repsol has formed a partnership with EDP Renovaveis, the renewable- energy unit of Portuguese utility EDP-Energias de Portugal SA, to develop two of these fields, Remp said. EDP Renovaveis said today in a statement that it would build the Moray Firth offshore wind project and the Inch Cape wind farm with Repsol. Those projects could generate as much as 2.4 gigawatts of power, of which EDPR will own a 60 percent share of the overall capacity, according to the statement. Moray Firth Project EDPR already owned a 75 percent stake in the Moray Firth facility, which decreases to 67 percent following Repsol’s acquisition of SERL. It will also hold a 49 percent share in the Inch Cape park in the outer Firth of Tay that could generate up to 905 megawatts, or enough power for 680,000 homes, EDPR said SeaEnergy Renewables signed a lease agreement with the Crown Estate, the manager of U.K. seabed, for exclusive rights to develop the Inch Cape facility, it said today in a statement “This deal allows us to take the view that we should be in oil and gas and marine renewables,” Remp said. Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond welcomed news about the agreement. Offshore Shareholdings Repsol will hold a 33 percent stake in Moray Offshore Wind Ltd. and 51 percent of Inch Cape Offshore Wind Ltd., the Scottish government said in a statement. Repsol will also now own a 25 percent stake in the Beatrice sea-based wind farm, in which Scottish and Southern Energy Renewables holds the remainder. SeaEnergy is the successor of Ramco Energy Plc, the oil and gas exploration firm that Remp founded in 1977. Ramco became SeaEnergy in 2009 and switched its focus to offshore wind after Remp saw potential for wind power in the North Sea. SeaEnergy’s legacy oil and gas assets include stakes in Mesopotamia Petroleum Co., which explores oil in Iraq, and Lansdowne Oil & Gas Plc. Its interests are either minority stakes or non-operated assets. SeaEnergy will focus on its marine-services business through its SeaEnergy Marine division, Remp said. The unit seeks to design, build and operate vessels to service the offshore wind industry. “The service business is a huge opportunity and as offshore wind developers now get into more detail, they really need somebody like us,” Remp said. Europe’s Offshore Wind The European offshore wind market may begin operating 11.5 gigawatts by 2015, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the London-based industry analyst. Gas Natural SDG SA may take part in some of Repsol’s projects in SeaEnergy Renewables with a 50 percent stake, said an official at the Barcelona-based natural gas company. That participation is subject to obtaining permission from U.K. authorities, the official said. Repsol owns 31 percent of Gas Natural. Today’s agreement allows SeaEnergy to retain its relationship with Nantong Cosco Ship Steel Structure Co Ltd. in China, Remp said. They’re looking at building jacket structures for offshore wind turbines in eastern Asia before bringing them flat-packed to the U.K. for assembly in yards and also installing them, Remp said. U.K. Renewable Power May Increase Tenfold by 2030, Study Says By Alex Morales - Renewable energy in the U.K. may increase tenfold by 2030 if the country can improve its power grids and provide training to the workforce, the Department of Energy and Climate Change said. Wind farms, solar panels and hydroelectricity could generate more than 197,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity in 2020 and 424,000 gigawatt-hours in 2030, compared with 50,000 gigawatt-hours last year, according to a study posted today on the agency’s website. The U.K. produced a total of 354,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity from all sources in 2009, the most recent year of data. The European Union has set a target of deriving 15 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, and Prime Minister David Cameron aims to make his government Britain’s “greenest” ever. “It is vital that our support for renewable electricity both encourages investment and represents value for money for consumers,” Energy Minister Charles Hendry said today in an e- mailed statement. If current constraints remain in place, the maximum possible renewable electricity generation capacity in the U.K. would be about 105,000 gigawatt-hours in 2020 and 220,000 in 2030, the report concluded. The government will use these findings to shape energy policy decisions from 2013 through 2017, the agency said. Report was prepared by the London-based engineering company Ove Arup & Partners Ltd. Iberdrola Orders $993 Million of Siemens Turbines for Offshore Project By Sally Bakewell - Jun 27, 2011 4:40 PM GMT+0200 Iberdrola Renovables SA (IBR), the world’s biggest operator of land-based wind parks, agreed to buy 700 million euros ($993 million) of turbines from Siemens AG (SIE) for its first offshore project. Iberdrola Renovables’ ScottishPower unit is building the 389-megawatt West of Duddon Sands wind farm in the Irish Sea with Danish utility Dong Energy A/S. It will cost 1.6 billion pounds ($2.56 billion) and will generate enough power for 300,000 homes when it goes into operation in 2014, Iberdrola Renovables said today in a statement. Britain has more turbines installed at sea than any other country and this project will help it reach its goal of having 13 gigawatts in operation by 2020, to meet European Union renewable energy targets. Siemens will design, transport and install 108 turbines, each with capacity of 3.6 megawatts. The turbines will use gears, Alfons Benzinger, a spokesman for Munich-based Siemens, said today by phone, though the company also has a model that doesn’t contain gears. Dong and Bilbao-based Iberdrola Renovables said they will fund the wind farm equally and expect to award additional contracts this year. The project, 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness in northern England, also includes an offshore transmission line that will be sold to an operator once it goes into operation. The companies have commissioned two installation vessels, according to the statement. Under a separate contract, Siemens will provide maintenance for the turbines for five years. Delivery is expected in mid-2013.
