Sierra Wireless (SWIR) is a company that was last covered on Seeking Alpha in November 2012. As a brief background, Sierra provides cellular wireless solutions to the machine-to-machine (M2M) and connected device markets in North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. Now, when we think of M2M, the Internet of Things springs to our mind.

The Internet of Things, according to Cisco (CSCO), is a concept in which machines communicate with one another. Cisco believes that this market will be worth a whopping $19 trillion by 2020 with more than 50 billion connected devices. Hence, since Sierra provides solutions that address this market, I think it is in a solid position to benefit from the Internet of Things.

Sierra Wireless, Q2 beat, strong guidance

Sierra (NASDAQ:SWIR) expects Q3 revenue of $137M-$140M and EPS of $0.12-$0.15, mostly above a consensus of $132.7M and $0.12.

OEM revenue +22.6% Y/Y in Q2 to $116.6M, enterprise revenue +27% to $18.4M. Excluding acquisitions, total revenue grew 16.8% Y/Y.

Gross margin was 32.2%, +20 bps Q/Q and -120 bps Y/Y. Opex +13% Y/Y to $39.8M. The cash balance rose by $17.1M Q/Q to $168.4M.

$4.8M in charges were taken related to reductions in Sierra's 2G chip development work. The cost cuts are expected to yield $1.2M/year in savings.

A few months ago, Sierra signed a deal with Philips to connect city lighting to the IoT, and this could prove to be beneficial in the long run. The ability to control street lighting can offer more consistent service, more efficient utilization of city funds and a more eco-friendly solution, and this will help Sierra establish its foothold in the market.

Legato, the company's next-generation Linux-based platform, allows developers to create and run applications faster. Sierra launched its new products like the AirLink LS300 and GX440, based on the Legato platform, which resulted in significant revenue growth in Europe. It also started shipping ES440, a gateway product designed specifically for the enterprise sphere. Sierra is planning to pre-install Legato on all new smart device modules, which will drive the adoption of its products in the long run.

Conclusion

Sierra Wireless looks cheap at a trailing P/E ratio of 10.5. It has a strong balance sheet, with $151 million in cash and no debt. Also, Sierra Wireless' prospects are strong, and given its steady financials, it seems to be a smart investment for the future

Jaarbeurs stelt IoT centraal op ICT-beurzen

Beursorganisator Jaarbeurs heeft tijdens een bijeenkomst voor standhouders bekend gemaakt dat het centrale thema van Infosecurity.nl, Storage Expo en The Tooling Event dit jaar internet of things (IoT) is. Deze vakbeurzen vinden tegelijkertijd op 29 en 30 oktober 2014 plaats in Utrecht.

In 2013 deden er meer dan honderdtachtig exposanten mee aan de drie vakbeurzen. In totaal kwamen er 8113 mensen naar de beurzen. Voor 2014 verwacht Jaarbeurs vergelijkbare aantallen. Daarnaast worden verschillende seminars en inhoudelijke sessies gepresenteerd in de theaters op en rond de beursvloer. Dit jaar wordt de keynote verzorgt door Yori Kamphuis. In 2013 werd hij uitgeroepen tot 'Futurist of the Year' en hij zal ingaan op de internet of things-revolutie.

Het Internet of Things begint te lopen voor Sierra.

Sierra +17.3% AH on Q3 beat, Q4 guidance

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ:SWIR) expects Q4 revenue of $145M-$148M and EPS of $0.25-$0.28, above a consensus of $142.4M and $0.17.

OEM Solutions revenue rose 29.7% Y/Y in Q3 to $124.3M; Enterprise Solutions revenue rose 15.4% to $19M. Organic revenue growth (excludes acquisitions) was 18.8%.

In addition to Sierra's top-line performance, operating leverage is giving a lift to EPS. While revenue rose 27.6% Y/Y in Q3, opex only rose 11% to $38.8M. Gross margin fell 50 bps Y/Y to 32.9%.
