    NEW YORK, April 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Globalstar, Inc. (GSAT) is the subject of a new analyst research report. GSAT is a provider of mobile satellite voice and data services in more than 120 countries. The Company's products include mobile and fixed satellite telephones, simplex and duplex satellite data modems and flexible service packages. GSAT customers include: the oil and gas, mining, forestry, commercial fishing, utility, transportation and heavy construction industries along with government and emergency preparedness agencies and the military.

    CEO Jay Monroe appeared on CNN recently, letting viewers know that an augmented version of its ASD-2 system, run through the Globalstar satellite network could have tracked Malaysian flight 370, or any plane it was installed in, on a constant basis.

    In February the company announced it filed applications with both the NASDAQ Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange to list its common stock for trading. Globalstar believes it currently meets all eligibility requirements of NYSE MKT, with the exception of the duration period above the minimum closing share price requirement. Both NYSE and NASDAQ are initiating reviews of the Company's listing eligibility. GSAT was formerly traded on the NASDAQ, but was delisted in December 2012 for not maintaining the $1.00/share price minimum.

    GSAT is in a rapidly growing business with high technology costs, not only for improved and new satellites but the gateways on earth the satellites communicate through. Generating enough cash flow and industry competition may be reason for concern.

    Google zou in eerste instantie 180 satellieten willen lanceren

    Google wil zeker een miljard dollar investeren in satellieten. Die moeten internetverbindingen gaan leveren in gebieden waar nu nog geen internet is, meldt de Wall Street Journal.

    Volgens de krant zou Google in eerste instantie 180 satellieten willen lanceren. Dat aantal zou later nog kunnen toenemen. Recentelijk heeft Google een aantal mensen aangenomen uit de satelliet- en ruimtevaartindustrie, die aan dit project zouden werken.

    Trager

    Internetten via de satelliet bestaat al langer. Het kan een uitkomst zijn in gebieden waar geen kabels in de grond liggen om internet mee mogelijk te maken. Met internet via satellieten zijn zulke kabels niet meer nodig, al is satellietinternet vaak trager dan bekabeld internet.

    Eerder al verschenen er plannen van Google om internetverbindingen op te leveren via drones en luchtballonnen. Ook Facebook heeft plannen om het internet naar nieuwe gebieden te brengen. Door het internet voor meer mensen beschikbaar te maken, hopen de techbedrijven meer klanten en uiteindelijk meer inkomsten te krijgen.

    Sinds de IPO in 2006 is de koers alleen maar gedaald en volkomen terecht want van hun mooie plannetjes is vrijwel niks bereikt: hun omzet is slechts ca 83 miljoen en ze maken nog steeds verlies, dit terwijl ze al 14 jaar bezig zijn....!!!

    An In-Depth Look at the Globalstar IPO

    On October 27, Bill Simpson wrote an analysis of Globalstar, Inc. (OTCQB:GSAT). GSAT shares priced at $17 a share on November 2. The text of Mr. Simpson's original writeup follows:

    Globalstar plans on offering 7.5 million shares (assuming over-allotment) at a range of $16-$18. Wachovia and JP Morgan are joint book runners, Jefferies co-manager. Post-offering GSAT will have 82.5 million shares outstanding for a market cap of $1.402 billion on a $17 pricing.

    The outstanding shares number includes shares yet to be purchased. GSAT for funding purposes has made a deal with Thermo Funding Company for Thermo to purchase a little over 12.4 million shares by 12/31/11 at a fixed price of $16.17 per share. Thermo Funding may purchase these shares at any time regardless of GSAT stock price. 180 day lock-up period applies to any purchases. Thus far, Thermo has purchased just under 1 million shares. It does not appear that Thermo must purchase these shares, just that they've a right to if they desire. Obviously if at some point GSAT's share price is well above $16.17, Thermo Funding will be purchasing these shares. If below, they will not.

    This is really not ideal for new shareholders as it presents a pretty significant potential future stock price drag and shareholder dilution on shareholders post-IPO. If Thermo fulfills their purchase, GSAT shareholders would be diluted 15%+. For this sort of deal, I would much prefer a longer lock-up then 180 days for these shares. That's not the case though -- Thermo will be free to sell any shares purchased at any time, 180 days from purchase. Also other insiders have the same rights as Thermo for just under 800,000 shares, which can be bought anytime until 12/31/11 at $16.17 a share. In order to give as accurate a picture of market cap, I counted all of these shares into current share count.

    Entities of Thermo will own 70% of GSAT prior to these upcoming transactions. Note that while it appears Thermo will be paying near IPO price for 12 million shares going forward, the 70% they already own on IPO were essentially free shares. Thermo's full position in GSAT assuming they purchase all shares would be roughly $3 a share overall. This is even a bit more deceiving as Thermo will only be a purchaser of additional shares if they're already 'in the black' and trading over $16.17.

    We are a leading provider of mobile voice and data communications services via satellite, with an estimated 10.2% share of global subscribers in the mobile satellite services industry in 2005.

    GSAT is one of three satellite communications companies IPO'ing this week. GSAT operates 43 in-orbit satellites and 25 ground stations to offer wireless services where traditional wireless and wireline do not and cannot. GSAT provides voice and data communications services in over 120 countries. In operation since 2000, GSAT currently has 236,500 subscribers.

    Google is van plan 180 satellieten de ruimte in te sturen om zodoende 'honderden miljoenen' mensen van internet te voorzien, ook op plaatsen waar internet normaal gesproken moeilijk aan te leggen is. Dat melden bronnen die dichtbij Google staan aan The Wall Street Journal.

    Het project kan al snel meer dan een miljard dollar gaan kosten en oplopen tot drie miljard, aldus de bronnen. Om het plan werkelijkheid te maken heeft Google een team van sateliet-specialisten opgezet onder leiding van Greg Wyler, mede-oprichter van de O3b Networks startup. Deze heeft ook als doel satellieten voor telecommunicatie-doeleiden uit te zenden naar de ruimte. Eerder kocht Google ook Titan Aerospace, een satelliet- en dronefabrikant.

    Zowel Google als Facebook experimenteren met nieuwe manieren om internet via het luchtruim te verspreiden. Zo is er al Google Loon, ballonnen die op zonne-energie werken en internet uitzenden vanuit de lucht. Facebook experimenteert ondertussen met drones die een soortgelijke functie hebben.

    Satellite-phone companies, seeking to expand beyond their niche market, are introducing products that let consumers set up Wi-Fi in remote campgrounds and other places where there’s no cellular signal.

    Today Iridium Communications Inc. (IRDM) unveiled Iridium GO!, a portable device that creates a Wi-Fi hot spot, allowing as many as five smartphones to make calls or surf the Web. Low-end service plans are expected to start at about $35 a month, with unlimited plans at about $130 a month, the company said. Globalstar Inc. (GSAT), one of Iridium’s competitors, introduced a similar product called Sat-Fi on Jan. 29.

    It’s the first time that satellite companies have made hot spots fully portable, said Jose Del Rosario, research director at Northern Sky Research. Previously, users had to install bulky Wi-Fi hardware at homes, offices or camps to get online. The new gadgets make satellite service accessible to hikers, who can use them while trekking through the wilderness.

    Goed nieuws voor aandeelhouders van Iridium; de kans op een bod neemt toe (wellicht heeft Google interesse, dit bedrijf is immers spotgoedkoop):

    KOUROU, French Guiana — A large shareholder in mobile satellite services provider Iridium Communications has asked the company to sell itself wholly or partially, saying Iridium management has consistently ignored the interests of its shareholders and been unable to estimate the cost of its second-generation satellite constellation.

    In a letter to Iridium Chairman Robert H. Niehaus, Avenir Corp. of Washington said Iridium’s March 28 decision to increase its planned share offering by 50 percent, to $225 million, is the latest example.

    McLean, Va.-based Iridium, which is midway through development of its $3 billion Iridium Next satellite constellation, told investors Feb. 6 that it would need to raise $150 million. It then increased the offer in late March.

    Kijk maar eens na het koersverloop.. Als het zo spotgoedkoop is, waarom doet die prijs niets? Zou het zo kunnen zijn dat ze de slag met GSAT aan het verliezen zijn? De markt denkt van wel...

    Wat een onzin: Iridium heeft veel meer satellieten dan GSAT en de omzet en hun ervaring is vele malen groter; die jochies van GSAT zijn amateurs vergeleken met de Iridium-boys.
