    Sequana Medical maakt zich op voor zijn eerste stappen op de lucratieve Amerikaanse farmamarkt en heeft het goedkeuringsdossier voor zijn Alfapump ingediend bij de farmawaakhond FDA. ‘Dit is een belangrijk moment voor Sequana Medical en het resultaat van vele jaren hard werk’, zegt CEO Ian Crosbie in een persbericht.
    Het bedrijf verwacht een beslissing van de FDA in de tweede jaarhelft. Analisten verwachten dat de Alfapump op termijn piekverkopen van enkele honderden miljoenen per jaar zal opleveren.
    De Alfapump is een medisch apparaat dat wordt ingeplant bij patiënten om ascites te behandelen. Dat is een complicatie van levercirrose waarbij vocht zich opstapelt in de buikholte. ‘Met ons pompje wordt het vocht automatisch en constant afgedreven. We pakken dus niet rechtstreeks de ziekte aan, maar verhogen wel de levenskwaliteit’, zei Crosbie eerder.
    Sequana zal de Alfapump met een eigen verkoopploeg in de VS aan de man brengen. Dat zal extra financiële middelen vergen. Eind juni had het bedrijf nog 17 miljoen euro op de bankrekening staan. Daarmee kan het de business financieren tot in het eerste kwartaal. Een nieuwe kapitaalverhoging - de vijfde sinds de beursgang - dringt zich dus op.
    In april haalde Sequana al eens 15,8 miljoen euro op. Om investeerders te overtuigen moest het nieuwe aandelen uitgeven tegen een bodemkoers: 3,55 euro. Dat was toen een korting van 30 procent tegenover de laatste beurskoers. Het bedrijf trok vier jaar geleden naar de beurs tegen 8,50 euro per aandeel.

    Het is wachten op de kapitaalverhoging. Ik ben benieuwd naar welk bedrag ze kunnen ophalen en aan welke prijs. Met een mogelijke commercialisatie in de nabije toekomst, heb ik er goede hoop op dat de uitgifteprijs niet opnieuw ver onder de huidige beurskoers zal liggen maar dat er serieuze investeerders interesse zullen tonen.

    Ghent, Belgium – 29 January 2024 – Sequana Medical NV (Euronext Brussels: SEQUA) (the "Company" or "Sequana Medical"), a pioneer in the treatment of fluid overload in liver disease, heart failure and cancer, today announces that the Premarket Approval (PMA) application for its alfapump has been accepted for substantive review by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The alfapump is the Company’s fully implantable, wirelessly charged device for patients with recurrent or refractory ascites due to liver cirrhosis and received breakthrough device designation from the US FDA in 2019.

    The PMA application for the alfapump system, which was based on the successful execution of Sequana Medical’s pivotal POSEIDON study, was submitted with a filing date of 28 December 2023, and is now under substantive review by the FDA. This notification from the FDA was anticipated on 11 February 2024. Pending FDA approval, which the Company anticipates in the second half of 2024, alfapump could become the first active implantable medical device in the US for treating liver ascites.
