    "De pistes die de neurotechbedrijven bewandelen, lopen erg uit elkaar. De een gaat voor zo klein mogelijke chips, de ander maakt er net met zoveel mogelijk contactpunten. Sommige spelers mikken op andere gebieden, zoals het ruggenmerg. Het beursgenoteerde Onward Medical staat daarin het verst. Vorig jaar toonde het hoe Gert-Jan Oskam, een man met een dwarslaesie, dankzij zijn elektrodes weer kleine afstanden kan lopen. ‘We blijven daarmee uniek in de wereld’, zegt CEO Dave Marver.

    De Nederlander is niet de enige met Onward Medical-tech in zijn lijf. Vorig jaar raakte bekend dat nog een man met een ruggenmergletsel een implantaat kreeg, in de hoop zijn armen, handen en vingers weer in beweging te krijgen. Marver wil niet kwijt hoe het daarmee staat. ‘Maar we zijn nog niet van plan om onze onderzoeken stop te zetten. We hebben Europese subsidies voor nog drie extra mensen.’

    Onward Medical ziet Neuralink niet als concurrent, maar als metgezel. ‘Het is fantastisch om te zien dat ook Musk steeds verder geraakt en daar zoveel aandacht mee genereert. Daar is het hele veld mee gebaat’, aldus Marver. Hij zag deze week zelf de aandelen van zijn bedrijf omhoogschieten, in het spoor van Neuralink. Onwards grootste uitdaging is naar eigen zeggen de toegang tot middelen. Het bedrijf, opgericht in 2015, haalde sinds de start zo’n 170 miljoen dollar op. Ter vergelijking: Neuralink verzamelde alleen al in augustus en november meer dan 320 miljoen dollar."

    Neuralink has now joined the expanding number of companies developing thought-reading #BCI devices that are in human trials. ??

    There is an opportunity to link these BCI devices with our spinal cord stimulation technology to restore movement after paralysis.

    Combining a BCI with ONWARD’s ARC Therapy creates a “digital bridge” between the brain and spinal cord that can restore walking or arm movement in a person with spinal cord injury.

    Currently, Neuralink has only implanted a chip in the brain.

    To restore movement after spinal cord injury, one also needs to implant technology near the spinal cord to deliver electrical therapy.

    We have already linked our neurostimulation platform with the CEA-Clinatec #BCI device to restore movement after paralysis.

    We welcome the opportunity to do the same with the Neuralink device.

    "‘Maar we zijn nog niet van plan om onze onderzoeken stop te zetten." klinkt niet erg overtuigend. Ze zitten wellicht "op de wip"?

    Nog eentje... sinds 2004.

    While Mr Musk's involvement raises the profile of Neuralink, some of his rivals have a track record dating back two decades. Utah-based Blackrock Neurotech implanted its first of many brain-computer interfaces in 2004.

    Precision Neuroscience, formed by a Neuralink co-founder, also aims to help people with paralysis. And its implant resembles a very thin piece of tape that sits on the surface of the brain and can be implanted via a "cranial micro-slit", which it says is a much simpler procedure.

    Zou vooral het financiële luik in 't oog houden. Koken kost geld. En 2 menu's nog veel meer. Dat is niet logisch voor een bedrijf met geldnood. Ken eigenlijk geen biotech die dan niet schrapt in zijn programma's. Verwacht dat dus eigenlijk wel, maar, op LT is dat m.i. een goede zaak.

    Ze hebben daar de laatste tijd nog een aantal keer over gecommuniceerd dat ze verwachten de filing te doen in de zeer nabije toekomst. Zoals eerder aangekondigd. Dus dat zou in het eerst halve jaar van 2024 moeten zijn. Als het ze lukt om zich aan dat plan te houden.

    Inderdaad wel vrij cruciaal ook denk ik.

    Dear Friends,

    Some of you may have questions about how ONWARD fits into the brain-computer interface (BCI) landscape, particularly after last week’s media coverage about Neuralink.

    Neuralink is a US-based technology company led by Elon Musk. Last week, Musk announced that the company had for the first time implanted its BCI in a human to assess whether it could successfully record the person’s brain signals. As with anything Musk-related, the news was everywhere and examples can be read via the following links from Bloomberg, USA Today, ABC News, and the Daily Mail.

    Many of last week’s news reports recognized ONWARD as a significant player in the BCI space. As I’ve shared previously, ONWARD is advancing BCI technology for the purpose of controlling our implantable ARCIM spinal cord stimulation therapy to restore movement of the human body. We have achieved several groundbreaking milestones with our partners at .NeuroRestore and CEA-Clinatec while studying the use of our ARCIM Therapy in conjunction with a BCI to help people with paralysis recover the ability to move, driven by the power of thought.

    Neuralink is at a very early stage with its first human implant of a BCI. We have already shown that our ARCIM Therapy can restore movement with spinal cord stimulation alone, and that the addition of an implanted BCI can potentially make that movement more natural and controllable. In fact, peer-reviewed clinical publications have described the use of our ARCIM Therapy to restore lower limb movement in 12 total participants, including one who was also implanted with a BCI. An additional person has been implanted with ARCIM Therapy plus a BCI to assess his ability to restore thought-driven upper extremity movement, and at least 3 additional ARCIM + BCI implants are planned over the next year. It should also be noted that we are currently using a BCI from CEA-Clinatec that has 5 years of human safety data.

    Two quotes from last week’s news stories further illustrate the current situation:

    “The Musk invention doesn't get a person moving,” wrote USA Today reporter Karen Weintraub. “For that, there has to be a second intervention. To restore movement for a person whose limbs don't move, the microelectrodes that ‘read’ brain signals have to be connected via a ‘digital bridge’ to the spinal cord which then stimulates movement, said Grégoire Courtine, a Swiss neuroscientist who works in the area and helped co-found a company ONWARD Medical to commercialize the work.”

    The Daily Mail also noted that “[Bloomberg host and Musk biographer Ashlee] Vance, who said he had visited Neuralink's facilities 10 times in three years, also revealed how Musk had pushed his company to ward off the threat of similar brain-computer start-ups Synchron and ONWARD.”

    It may interest you to learn that I don’t consider Neuralink to be an ONWARD competitor. Like other pure-play BCI companies, Neuralink is focused on developing technology to help a person communicate with a computer mouse, keyboard, or voice generator. Our expertise and focus is restoring movement and function of the human body. Our ARCIM System is “BCI-ready” -- it has been designed to receive wireless signals from a BCI. That means we could eventually partner with Neuralink and other BCI companies or develop our own BCI using in-licensed technology. Strategically, we are in a strong position because our capabilities are unique and our technology platform provides great flexibility.

    In closing, one positive from last week’s Neuralink news is the attention it is bringing to the work ONWARD and others are doing to restore movement and function after spinal cord injury. The SCI Community deserves more resources and attention, whatever the source.
