(Euronext: ONWD), the medical technology company creating innovative spinal cord stimulation therapies to restore movement, function, and independence in people with spinal cord injury (SCI), today announces that the Company will participate in the Degroof Petercam Healthcare Conference this month.

    On Wednesday, January 24, 2024, CEO Dave Marver will update conference attendees on the Company’s progress toward commercializing ARC-EX® Therapy, with launch expected later this year. He will also participate in 1:1 and group meetings with investors.

    Onward plaatst voor het eerst implantaat om armen weer te bewegen na ruggenmergletsel

    Onward Medical, een Nederlands medisch technologiebedrijf dat genoteerd is op de beurs van Brussel, heeft voor het eerst toestellen geïmplanteerd bij een persoon met een dwarslaesie - een onderbreking van de zenuwen in de rug - met als doel dat die zijn armen, handen en vingers weer kan bewegen. Dat heeft Onward, dat de Vlaamse investeringsholding Gimv als een van de aandeelhouders heeft, bekendgemaakt.

    De betrokken patiënt werd in augustus twee keer geopereerd in Lausanne (Zwitserland): een eerste keer om een ruggenmergstimulator (ARC-IM) te plaatsen, de tweede keer om een BCI (brein-computer interface) in te planten.

    "De BCI werkt samen met ARC-IM en is ontworpen om de intentie van een verlamde persoon om zijn bovenste ledematen te bewegen vast te leggen en gebruikt artificiële intelligentie om die gedachten te decoderen", legt Onward uit. "ARC-IM zet de gedecodeerde informatie vervolgens om in ARC-IM Therapy - precieze stimulatie van het ruggenmerg - wat resulteert in gedachtegestuurde beweging."

    De implantatieprocedures verliepen vlot volgens Jocelyne Bloch, de neurochirurg die ze uitvoerde. "We werken nu samen met de patiënt om deze geavanceerde innovatie te gebruiken om de beweging van zijn armen, handen en vingers te herstellen. We kijken ernaar uit om op het gepaste moment meer informatie te delen."

    Het gaat om een nieuwe stap in het klinisch onderzoek naar door gedachten geïnitieerde ruggenmergstimulatie na een dwarslaesie. Eerder was al gebleken dat de technologie een persoon kan helpen om meer controle te krijgen over de bewegingen van zijn verlamde benen.

    Onward, met hoofdzetel in de Nederlandse stad Eindhoven, is een medisch technologiebedrijf dat therapieën ontwikkelt om beweging, functie en onafhankelijkheid te herstellen bij mensen met een dwarslaesie en bewegingsbeperkingen.
