    WSP experts spend time at sea investigating Australia’s offshore wind project

    WSP geotechnical experts spent a combined total of five weeks in Bass Strait investigating site conditions for Australia’s most advanced offshore wind project – Star of the South.

    THURSDAY, 16 NOVEMBER 2023 - AUSTRALIA
    Ray Maujean – Associate Geotechnical Engineer, Sean Bartlett – Geotechnical Engineer, and Lawrence Hanson – Senior Civil Engineer, spent time aboard the Fugro Mariner investigating the seabed off the coast of Victoria’s Gippsland region within Star of the South’s 2019 Exploration Licence Area.

    WSP is proud to be part of this first geotechnical investigation for Australia’s most advanced offshore wind project, which has the potential to generate up to 2.2 GW of new capacity, supplying around 20 per cent of Victoria's energy needs and powering the equivalent of 1.2 million homes across the state.

    WSP’s experts served as client representatives and were responsible for ensuring that all data acquired throughout the investigation was of a high standard and met the design team’s requirements. We were also responsible for communications between the project’s onshore team and the project team on the Fugro Mariner. This included communicating changes to scope, environmental and/or safety aspects related to the project, and reporting on weather conditions and sea states that may impact the operability of the vessel.

    Ray says, “We were basically the eyes and ears for the onshore project team, so it was critical that we relied on our expertise and good communication skills.”

    “It was fantastic being onboard the vessel working amongst a technically excellent team who were absolutely committed to the safe delivery of the project,” says Lawrence.

    Geotechnical investigation vital for turbine design and placement

    For this project, the purpose of the geotechnical investigation was to acquire cone penetration testing (CPT) data and seabed samples for testing. We investigated 22 locations within the Exploration Licence Area, with water depths ranging between 20 to 50 metres.

    This investigation builds understanding of the composition and potential behaviour of the seabed in the proposed offshore wind location. On the basis of this understanding, Star of the South can design a proposed turbine foundation and layout to suit local conditions.

    Soil samples from up to 70 metres beneath the seabed were acquired, analysed on board, and packed in tubes for further classification and advanced soil testing onshore. The samples were acquired metre by metre. A large frame was lowered to the seabed, a drill pipe ran from the ship to the frame, and sampling tools were lowered down using a winch wire.

    Leading project shapes Australia’s energy future

    If approved and constructed, it is anticipated that Star of the South will have a significant impact on Victoria's energy sector, boosting low-emissions clean energy generation.

    “Although away from all the comforts of home, it was all worth it for a project that is shaping Australia’s energy future,” says Sean. “This project is a huge step forward for the offshore wind industry,” he says, “especially because it was safely executed and completed within the time allocated.”

    Lawrence has been involved with the Star of the South since late 2021 as civil lead for the project’s onshore transmission system. He says, “The relationships we have built over the years working closely with members of the team have helped make WSP a trusted consultant for this valued client.”

    “The hard work of every party involved has set an excellent standard for future offshore wind investigations. Being involved in this offshore geotechnical investigation has been an exciting and rewarding experience, and it is an important milestone for the project and for the industry.”

    Ray rates his involvement in the project as a career highlight. “I am extremely fortunate to be part of Australia’s most advanced offshore windfarm project,” he says. “Offshore wind has been a long time coming in Australia and Star of the South is just the start of the offshore wind boom in Australia.”

    Lithuania moves on with first offshore wind farm

    A 700MW offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Lithuania will be the country’s first, with claims that it will supply a quarter of domestic electricity by 2030.

    Project leaders Ignitis Renewables, which owns 51% of the shares, and partner Ocean Winds say the farm will cover an area of 120km2.and will comprise between 35 and 50 turbines, with a maximum height of 350 metres. Their €20 million bid won the auction, held in August 2023,

    “The offshore wind farm is a significant step towards Lithuania’s energy independence,” the partners say. “This project will significantly increase local electricity generation from renewable energy sources and, thus, ensure lower dependence on electricity imports. It is the largest energy project in Lithuania, which will be the first country from the Baltic states to have an operating offshore wind farm.

    “Our focus is on cultivating the necessary expertise for advancing supply chains essential for the successful development of offshore wind park projects in the Baltic Sea. By establishing a robust supply chain, we aim to leverage both local and international resources, ensuring sustained support throughout the duration of our projects.”

    The project leaders have contracted Fugro to deploy its geophysical survey vessel, Fugro Frontier, to collect 2D ultra-ultra-high-resolution sub-surface data, as well as bathymetry, sidescan sonar, and magnetometer data.

    “The 2,000 survey line kilometres of high-quality data collected will be crucial for characterising the site and identifying potential risks to an offshore wind farm development in this area,” says Fugro. “These insights will inform the selection of future geotechnical investigations and help create a detailed ground model that Ignitis Renewables will use to determine the optimal wind turbine foundation design and locations.”

    The wind farm will be at least 37km away from shore, and approximately 60km away from the Port of Klaipeda.

    We leven dankzij dijken in een land onder zeeniveau, terwijl de zeespiegel steeds sneller stijgt. Het gaat Nederland dus extra veel geld kosten om het hoofd boven water te houden, en niet een beetje ook.
    We laten het woord aan Leo Zwang van Fugro. Dat is een Nederlands bedrijf dat gegevens over het aardoppervlak verzamelt en interpreteert.
    ‘Kosten van dijken miljarden duurder dan verwacht’
    “Dijken, waterkeringen en dammen moeten worden versterkt om in 2050 overal te voldoen aan de nieuwe, deels strengere normen op het gebied van waterveiligheid. De operatie gaat vele miljarden extra kosten dan eerder verwacht. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van de Rijksoverheid.

    Maar dat is niet alles. Door de sneller stijgende zeespiegel verwachten we dat de kosten nóg verder zullen toenemen. Grootschalige ingrepen aan dijken zijn hard nodig en de tijd dringt, want dijkversterkingen kosten tijd. Sommige dijken moeten door de hogere zeespiegel mogelijk ruim twintig meter verbreed worden. De tijdsdruk om deze veranderingen door te voeren is immens hoog.”
    ‘Impact op milieu’
    “Het versterken van dijken heeft impact op het milieu. Op dit moment wordt nog weinig lokaal materiaal gebruikt, wat leidt tot grootschalige import uit het buitenland. Door meer lokaal beschikbaar materiaal toe te passen worden transportafstanden beperkt. Daarnaast biedt dit kansen voor circulair gebruik van materiaal en de wingebieden kunnen worden gebruikt voor natuurontwikkeling. Upcycling, het geschikt maken van nu al beschikbaar materiaal, is hier een voorbeeld van.
    Het versnellen van lopende onderzoeken naar dijkversterking is belangrijk. Nieuwe innovaties moeten sneller ingevoerd worden door dijkenbouwers. Koplopersprojecten kunnen hier het goede voorbeeld bij geven. Deze kunnen de weg wijzen naar effectieve oplossingen.”

    ‘Overijsselse Hasselt’
    “Een voorbeeld is dijkversterking Stenendijk in het Overijsselse Hasselt. Voor de versterking hiervan werd voor de eerste keer bij machines gebruikgemaakt van elektriciteit als enige energiebron. Zo kon emissieloos worden gewerkt. Naast beperking van de CO2-uitstoot, levert dit voordelen op met betrekking tot geluid en stikstofemissie.
    De complexiteit van het probleem heeft niet alleen een versnelling van duurzame maatregelen, maar ook een landelijke visie en strategie nodig. Eigenlijk moeten we in de huidige versterkingen al rekening houden met de klimaatverandering over honderd jaar in plaats van een weliswaar slim maar een (te) ver geoptimaliseerd ontwerp voor de komende vijftig jaar. Dit vraagt om een nieuw nationaal deltaplan, vergelijkbaar met het plan uit 1953, waarin waterschappen, overheden en dijkenbouwers samenwerken. Door kennis te delen kan er veel tijd bespaard worden en kunnen we sneller voortgang maken.”

    ‘Goed kijken en kosten besparen’
    “Daarnaast is het goed om te kijken hoe we het maximale kunnen halen uit de dijken die we al hebben. Er zit veel verborgen veiligheid in dijken. Dit verder uitzoeken kan een aanzienlijke kostenbesparingen opleveren en bovendien helpen in de prioriteit van de dijkversterkingen.”

    @JK Dutch: je gaf aan dat bij een breakaway-gap de stijging tussen de 10% en 20% procent kan zijn, we zitten nu op 21% obv de slotkoers voor de cijferdag en 9% obv de slotkoers van de cijferdag zelf. Denk dat je Fugro technisch gezien uitgeraasd is, of zijn daar naast de stabilisatie van vandaag nog geen signalen voor?

    We hebben vorige week ook weer een gap gehad bij de Capital market day, maar de eerste was bij cijfers idd.
    Ik zie geen verzwakking. De macd is nog sterk, vorige week even een dip in de stochastic maar staat ook nog hoog.

    Deze week mss wat op neer maar trend is up.

    Goedemiddag, thanks voor de update JK Dutch.
    Ik heb mij toch vergist, dacht dat het vandaag wel richting de 17 zou gaan.
    Cijfers waren goed en de vooruitzichten zijn erg goed dus had een hogere koers verwacht.
    Volume vandaag ook niet om naar huis te schrijven of de eindveiling moet weer uitschieten.
    Nog een klein half uurtje en dan weten wij het.

    EDINBURGH, UK — Fugro has started work on a metocean survey for the proposed Salamander floating offshore wind development 35 km offshore Peterhead, eastern Scotland.

    Salamander is a joint venture between Ørsted, Simply Blue Group and Subsea7. The campaign, which involves deployment of floating LiDAR and wave buoys, will continue for 12 months.

    Results will support the project's design, operations and maintenance strategy as well as the planning application process.

    The two floating Seawatch wind lidar buoys and the Wavescan buoy will compile meteorological, oceanographic and environmental site data, including wave height, wind and current speed. The aim is to deliver a full assessment of the site's characteristics and seasonal conditions.

    This is one of various surveys required before submission of the environmental impact assessment and habitat regulations appraisal for the development.

    Goedemiddag allen, de koers wil maar niet door de 17.
    Het wordt tijd dat ene DZR hier komt melden dat het helemaal niks wordt met Fugro!
    Dan staat de koers binnen no time op 18.
    Eerst heeft hij dat bij Adyen gedaan en nu doet hij dat bij Avantium.
    Die koersen zijn alleen maar gestegen, dus zou zo zeggen kom er maar in DZR. Ha Ha

    Fugro unveils next-generation coastal mapping system

    November 21, 2023
    Fugro recently introduced its next-generation coastal mapping system, the Rapid Airborne Multibeam Mapping System (RAMMS 2.0), at the Hydro 2023 conference in Genoa, Italy. RAMMS 2.0, the world’s only airborne Lidar system capable of delivering both full water column imaging and high-resolution bathymetry, is designed for precise mapping, monitoring and modelling of coastal environments. This information plays a critical role in coastal hazard assessment and mitigation, marine resource management, coastal engineering and navigation safety.

    The new sensor builds on the success of Fugro’s original RAMMS, co-developed with technology partner Areté in response to client needs for more robust geospatial data delivered faster and more sustainably. Since its launch in 2018, Fugro has utilized RAMMS to map over 50,000km2 in the Americas and Europe, meeting international accuracy standards while reducing carbon emissions by up to 80%.

    Dual-laser capability

    The key enhancement in RAMMS 2.0 is its dual-laser capability, which, combined with machine learning, not only enhances data accuracy but also expedites project delivery. This advanced hardware-software integration was recently tested in Portugal, where RAMMS 2.0 was deployed from an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV), successfully mapping an area of a challenging surf zone.

    “The dual-laser, full water column capability of RAMMS 2.0 is a game-changer for coastal resilience,” said Mark MacDonald, hydrography director for Fugro in the Americas and global product owner for Fugro RAMMS. “We’re excited to present this innovation at Hydro 2023 as it empowers users to unlock the full potential of a single dataset to characterize the water column, map the seafloor, understand habitats and make informed decisions about coastal management.”

    MacDonald presented the new system during a talk entitled ‘Fugro RAMMS Lidar Unveiled: Leading the Way in Coastal Ecosystem Discovery’. He was joined by Fugro’s global geospatial lead, Pooja Mahapatra, and coastal resilience manager for Europe and Africa, Benoit Cajelot.
