ArcelorMittal Shines at DGNB's Sustainable Building Symposium

In a momentous gathering of the construction industry, ArcelorMittal made its presence felt at the German Sustainable Building Council's Sustainability Day in Stuttgart. As a DGNB member, the company engaged in enlightening conversations, emphasizing the advantages of sustainable construction with steel.

The event, held on 20th June in Stuttgart, served as a platform for discussing the future of the construction industry and the path to achieving sustainable practices. Through talks, networking sessions, and exhibitions, participants explored alternative building materials, energy-efficient solutions, and eco-friendly products. The winners of the esteemed "DGNB Sustainability Challenge" were also recognized. A unanimous agreement emerged among industry stakeholders that collaboration and synergy are vital for driving sustainable transformation and climate protection initiatives. The DGNB, along with events like the Sustainability Day, aims to foster these connections and facilitate knowledge exchange.

ArcelorMittal demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by sending a delegation of esteemed professionals to Stuttgart. Since spring, the company has proudly become the first major steel manufacturer to join the ranks of the DGNB. Mechthild Janischowsky, Christoph Radermacher, Falk Satzger, Jens Haberkorn, and Arne Langner, all representing various divisions of ArcelorMittal, showcased the organization's eco-conscious construction solutions. They engaged in conversations with key stakeholders from the construction and real estate sectors, focusing on the principles of sustainable building with steel.

The ArcelorMittal team at the event enthusiastically highlighted the ecological and economic benefits of using steel in construction. They emphasized its exceptional durability, full recyclability, and remarkable potential for reducing CO2 emissions across infrastructure and building projects. ArcelorMittal's CO2 reduced steel is crafted from recycled and renewable materials, harnessing 100%green electricity and up to 100 percent scrap. The XCarb® steel, already implemented in various construction applications, offers outstanding performance for roofs, walls, support structures, and foundations.

Steel possesses an impressive recycling capacity of nearly 100%, without compromising quality. This reduces the reliance on primary raw materials and lowers CO2 emissions compared to traditional construction materials like concrete. Moreover, steel enables energy efficiency, thermal insulation, and seamless integration of technologies like photovoltaics, elevating sustainable practices. Its resilience, longevity, and minimal maintenance requirements further contribute to its appeal. Additionally, the design flexibility, swift construction, and lightweight nature of steel provide additional advantages. At the end of its life cycle, steel structures can be dismantled and repurposed, aligning perfectly with the principles of sustainable construction.

ArcelorMittal's Environmental Conundrum: Hot End Shutdown at Fos-sur-Mer

ArcelorMittal faces the imperative of shuttering the hot end of its operations at Fos-sur-Mer due to environmental concerns, confirms Fastmarkets. A labor inspection, with resolute authority, mandated the cessation of steelmaking activities at ArcelorMittal's Fos-sur-Mer facility nestled in southern France. The company, acknowledging the directive, corroborated the development to Fastmarkets on June 26, expressing that the labor inspectorate notified us today of a decision to temporarily stop the activity of part of our Fos site steelmaking site.

Sources intimately acquainted with the matter divulged that the rationale behind this edict lies in the unsettlingly high levels of employee exposure to deleterious substances and particulate matter, compounded by the inadequacy of protective measures. ArcelorMittal refrained from specifying the precise timeline for the closure, instead emphasizing that the company has established and implemented an action plan with all parties to reduce personnel exposure.

Moreover, the company unequivocally affirmed that preparations have commenced to effectuate the shutdown of steelmaking operations at Fos-sur-Mer, ensuring optimal safety and environmental considerations. Within the ambit of Fos-sur-Mer, ArcelorMittal operates two blast furnaces boasting a combined annual capacity of 5 million metric tons of hot metal. The site, a purveyor of hot-rolled and cold-rolled coil, stands as a vital production hub.

Earlier this year, ArcelorMittal triumphantly revived BF No2 at Fos-sur-Mer, resuscitating it from a prolonged six-month hiatus precipitated by unfavorable market conditions.

Voor volgend halfjaar een beetje hetzelfde als eerste halfjaar qua contracten.

Some large European steelmakers have concluded July-December hot-rolled coil contracts at rollovers compared with the first half of the year with automotive-focused service centres and other supply chains.

Contracts in north Europe for January-June were close to €800/t and mills have managed to secure some second-half deals at similar levels, although many contracts are still to be finalised and buyers are eyeing declines.

Mills initially entered the contracts asking for increases of up to €100/t, but continuous declines in spot prices over recent months quickly undermined these attempts. Spot prices are currently averaging below €680/t for June, down from €768/t in May, and at a decent discount to the settled contracts. The forward curve on the CME's north European hot-rolled coil (HRC) contract has the July-December price at around €671.50/t based on the average of settlements on Tuesday.

Automotive-focused service centres and cold-rollers in north Europe suggest they are bidding as much as €100/t below first-half contracts, with a view to getting smaller declines — €50/t reductions would be a good result, according to some buyers.

Steelmakers hope supply disruptions, and demand-related output reductions, will be sufficient to counteract the large declines buyers are seeing.

Blast furnace input costs have increased a touch over the first half of this year compared with July-December 2022 on average. The raw material basket cost for iron ore, coking coal and scrap is about $430/t over the first six months of this year so far, compared with about $380/t over the second half of 2022, according to Argus calculations. The average spread between spot HRC and those primary inputs has risen from $345/t to $402/t over the same period despite the cost increases.

Other inputs have decelerated markedly. The benchmark TTF natural gas price is currently trading about €35/MW, after reaching highs of almost €350/MW in August last year. Mills cited rising gas costs as they unsuccessfully attempted to increase prices over the third quarter, but many blast furnace-based producers are largely self-sufficient. Some consume natural gas for their downstream rolling operations, and the escalating price has affected their conversion costs.

ArcelorMittal and Snop sign sustainability MoU and trial car part using low-carbon emissions steel

ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company, and Snop, a major tier-one European automotive supplier, have signed a sustainability-focussed memorandum of understanding (MoU) this morning at Snop’s headquarters in Villepinte, France. The agreement also includes a commitment to trial the use of high strength, low carbon-emissions steel in structural car parts. The MoU seeks to strengthen the two companies’ cooperation on environmental sustainability, specifically through the use of XCarb® solutions that contribute to the decarbonisation of the automotive sector. XCarb® is the name under which all ArcelorMittal’s low-carbon emissions products and all decarbonization initiatives are grouped.

The MoU includes an agreement to trial the use of Usibor®, a high-strength steel, made using ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel. More broadly, the MoU covers the supply and purchase of other XCarb® solutions including XCarb® green steel certificates.

Usibor® manufactured with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced substrate, typically has a CO2 footprint that is almost 70% lower compared with conventionally produced steel. High-strength structural car parts, used in the frame of a vehicle, have already been manufactured by the Snop and ArcelorMittal teams, with the first tests of the parts underway.

May and go away but remember to come back in September. ;-))
