Nel ASA: Spain´s King Felipe opens the 'king of electrolysers' (Oslo, 13 May 2022) A new Nel installation for Iberdrola at Fertiberia’s fertilizer plant in Puertollano shows even existing facilities can be made less polluting in a cost-effective manner. The 20 MW PEM electrolyser plant, which was officially opened today, is Europe’s biggest and will reduce CO2 emissions from fertilizer production as green hydrogen will replace hydrogen produced from fossil fuels. “This really is the 'king of electrolysers' and shows what we can achieve in green-hydrogen production for European industry,” says Jon André Løkke, Nel´s CEO. The electricity needed for the hydrogen production will be produced at Iberdrola´s new solar park, which is located a few kilometers from the hydrogen and fertilizer plant in Puertollano, approximately 250 km south of Madrid. Cost is often the factor that hinders industrial development and transition to new technologies. Existing systems work well enough and typically have many years´ life left in them. To build a new facility featuring new technology is a huge investment, and one that might also imply a reduction in production capacity for a company whose shareholders are expecting regular dividends. But Fertiberia´s fertilizer factory at Puertollano in Spain, shows there is an in-between option when it comes to the green transition. The plant was built using legacy steam-reformation technology, where large amounts of gas are burned to heat further amounts of gas mixed with steam. This process releases hydrogen from the natural gas, which can then be combined with nitrogen to form ammonia, the key ingredient of agricultural fertilizer. But the process also releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide. Now, Nel´s Wallingford factory in the USA has produced Europe´s biggest electrolyser to help reduce those emissions. 16 cells combine to form a 20 MW system powered by solar panels. The green hydrogen produced will replace parts of the natural gas used hitherto, which translates into an annual CO2 output reduction of almost 50,000 tonnes. This is a first step towards a greener ammonia industry, and Fertiberia and other ammonia producers are planning to make 100% green-hydrogen fertilizer production a reality in the coming years. As with many developments in industry, progress depends largely on funding throughout the value chain, and clear policy direction at both the national and international level. Nel and the entire hydrogen industry are eagerly anticipating the publication of the European Commission’s RePowerEU implementation plan on 18 May. This should provide further clarity on the regulatory framework for renewable hydrogen and funding tools available. ENDS

Zeer betrouwbaar.
EC Supports 10 Fold Increase in Electrolyser Capacities Strategic Research Institute Published on : 16 May, 2022, 6:30 am European Commissioner for Internal Market Mr Thierry Breton & European electrolyser manufacturers met in Brussels to discuss how to increase industry's capacity to produce electrolysers used to produce clean hydrogen. The Commissioner and 20 industry CEOs signed a Joint Declaration whereby industry committed to a tenfold increase of its electrolyser manufacturing capacities by 2025. This will enable the annual EU production of 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030, set as target in the March 2022 REPowerEU Communication. It will improve Europe's sustainable and secure energy supply and reduce EU's reliance on Russian gas. The Joint Declaration sets out a target agreed by electrolyser manufacturers in Europe to increase their manufacturing capacity tenfold to 17.5 GW per year. It also features Commission actions to put in place a supportive regulatory framework, facilitate access to finance and promote efficient supply chains. Among them: Ensuring that regulation governing the production of renewable hydrogen support a fast and affordable ramp-up of the market for renewable hydrogen and its production in Europe Adoption of a recommendation and a legislative proposal on accelerated permitting for renewable energy projects, including renewable hydrogen Assessment of State aid notification for hydrogen projects as a matter of priority Commitment by electrolyser manufacturers to apply only with high quality project proposals that are fully aligned with the climate targets and REPowerEU ambition Collaboration with the EIB to facilitate the financing of electrolyser manufacturing and deployment projects Establishment of an ‘Electrolyser Partnership' that will bring together electrolyser manufacturers and suppliers of components and materials within the existing structures of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance The European Clean Hydrogen Alliance brings together industry, public authorities, civil society and other stakeholders.

Nel ASA: EU Commission increases ambitions on renewable hydrogen (Oslo, 19 May 2022) Yesterday the European Commission presented a wide range of initiatives to reduce Europe’s reliance on fossil fuels from Russia. A list of proposals aimed to stimulate the production of renewable hydrogen and to improve framework conditions for European electrolyser manufacturers are included in this plan, known as RePowerEU. These proposals include: A call to the co-legislators (European Parliament and the Council) to increase the demand side targets for the use of renewable hydrogen in certain sectors, specifically: an increase in the industry target from 50% renewable hydrogen consumption in 2030 to 75% an increase in the transport target from 2.5% renewable hydrogen consumption in 2030 to 5% The European Commission has committed to doubling the next ETS Innovation Fund call for large scale projects set to be announced in Autumn of this year. EUR 3 billion will be made available for among other electrolyser manufacturers. “The recently announced RePowerEU plan is good news for the electrolyserer manufacturers and represents an important milestone for the green hydrogen industry in Europe. We expect this will contribute to increased investment activities”, says Nel’s CEO Jon André Løkke. In March the European Commission amplified its ambitions for green hydrogen production and is now aiming at a production target of 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen domestically and an additional 10 million tons of annual imports. According to industry estimates, reaching this target will require an installed electrolyser capacity of 90-100 GW in Europe, depending on utilization factors and efficiency rates. Adding 10 million tons of green hydrogen production capacity outside Europe as well, and assuming a lower load factor, we could be looking at as much as 300 GW of electrolyser capacity needed by 2030. Consequently, the electrolyser production capacity must be scaled-up significantly. “We recently opened the World’s first fully automated electrolyser manufacturing plant at Herøya in Norway and has initiated a site selection process for a new manufacturing facility in Europe, to make sure we are ready to increase production when needed”, Løkke says. Nel has previously communicated an ambition to reach 10 GW production capacity in Europe, Asia and the US within 2025, if required by the market. The company has also stated that it will start a site selection process for additional production capacity in Europe ENDS
