Tijdens die periode neemt Chang’e 4 even pauze.www.ad.nl/buitenland/katoenplantje-ov...

China's car population by 2018 rose to 240 million units, which was 22.85 million units more than that of the previous year. Of that, the number of small-sized passenger service vehicles grew by around 20.85 million units over the previous year to 201 million units, the major driving force for overall car population growth. The private car ownership reached up to 189 million units last year and was increased by 19.52 million units averagely on an annual basis for the past nearly 5 years. In addition, the number of trucks registered in 2018 reached an all-time high of 3.26 million units with the national truck population climbing to 25.7 million units. As the end of 2018, China has had a total of 61 cities with over 1 million registered cars, among which 27 cities have got car population topping 2 million units. Eight major cities, including Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Zhengzhou, Shenzhen and Xi’an, saw their respective car parc exceed 3 million units. The new energy vehicle population grew by 1.07 million units throughout 2018 to 2.61 million units, among which 2.11 million units are all-electric vehicles. Besides, a total of 369 million car drivers have been by far registered in this country, making up 90.28% of total motor vehicle driver numbers. Source : Gasgoo

China approves large new upstream hydropower dam project on the Yangtze river NDTV reported that China has approved construction of one of its tallest dams, a 239 metre (784-foot) hydroelectric structure on the upstream section of its longest river, the Yangtze. Hydropower is a clean and renewable source of energy but large-scale construction in southwest China has sparked accusations of damage to fragile ecosystems and inadequate compensation to thousands who have lost their homes. As concern grows over the social and environmental costs of large hydroelectric dams, China has become more cautious of approving new projects in recent years. The state planner, the National Development and Reform Commission, said in a notice that "Great importance must be attached to environmental protection and migrant resettlement work during the construction.” The reservoir of the Lawa hydroelectric project will submerge nearly 12 sq miles (31 sq km) of forest and farmland on the Jinsha branch of the Yangtze on the border between Sichuan and Tibet. The project is envisaged to eventually consist of four turbines with a total capacity of 2,000 megawatts (2 gigawatts). That compares with China's total hydropower capacity of 350 gigawatts by the end of last year, with about 270 GW contributed by large-scale projects, an industry group said last week. Source : NDTV
Vale ships iron ore pellets for port sales in China - Report Platts reported that Brazilian miner Vale has transported pellets to Chinese ports, and plans to sell pellet on Yuan basis after the Lunar New Year. Traders said that Vale had shipped two 150,000 tonnes cargoes of 64% Fe pellets to Caofeidian port in Tangshan and Rizhao port in Shandong. Market sources are concerned that these cargoes will increase the selling pressure in the spot market. As pellet usage ratio is not big in blast furnaces in China, some players doubt there would be enough liquidity to support fresh supply in the spot market. Another trader said that these pellet cargoes from Vale is probably from the restart of the Sao Luis Pellet plant in third-quarter 2018. The quality of which is difficult to sell into Northeast Asian markets. Source : Platts
Global Ferronickel holds ore shipments to China steady Philippines nickel ore miner, Global Ferronickel Holdings Inc, said that it aims to ship 5.7 million wet metric tonnes to China this year, in line with 2018, as China’s cooling economy slows expected demand. Global Ferronickel also said it has signed a contract to sell 1 million wmt of ore to Baosteel, a unit of top steel manufacturer China Baowu Steel Group. It is also looking to sell ore to China’s Guangdong Century Tsingshan Nickel Industry Co. Global Ferronickel President Dante Bravo said “The deal with Baosteel, which has been a customer of the Philippines’ second-largest nickel ore producer since 2014, is the biggest so far between the two companies. The effect of the cooling Chinese economy basically brought down the expected demand and ore prices. But overall, we are still profitable. We will be signing new supply agreements with our buyers after the Chinese new year.” As nickel prices fell last year, Global Ferronickel opted to ship higher-grade ores to maximize profitability. Last year’s shipment volume of 5.709 million WMT was also 3.8% higher than its 5.5 million WMT target, thanks to favorable weather conditions and more efficient operations, it said. The miner is looking to further boost sales of medium and high-grade ores this year to 60% of total sales, with low-grade ores accounting for 40%. Medium- and high-grade made up 53% of the sales mix last year and just 39% in 2017. The Philippines is the world’s second-biggest supplier of nickel ore, used to make stainless steel, after Indonesia. Source : Reuters
Copper rises for 3rd session on China’s stimulus measures Reuters reported that London copper prices rose for a third straight session on Thursday as China’s move to inject liquidity into the financial system boosted expectations of higher demand in the world’s top industrial metals consumer. Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange rose 0.3 percent to USD 5,987 a tonne by 0130 GMT while the most-traded contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange gained 0.5 percent to CNY 47,390 (USD 7,017.41) a tonne. China’s central bank said it will make another big cash injection through open market operations on Thursday, following its biggest-ever net liquidity injection a day earlier. China’s policymakers are pledging to step up stimulus measures this year and do more to protect jobs as economic growth cools to 28-year lows. Source : Reuters
Shanghai port sees record container throughput in 2018 Shanghai International Port (Group) Co Ltd (SIPG), the largest port group in the Chinese mainland, reported a record high container throughput last year. SIPG, which operates all the public container and bulk terminals in the Port of Shanghai, said Tuesday that its container throughput in 2018 reached 42.01 million standard containers, or twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 4.4 percent year on year. In its unaudited preliminary earnings estimate filed to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the port operator said the new record made it the world’s largest port in terms of container throughput for nine consecutive years. Meanwhile, SIPG handled 561 million tonnes of cargo last year, flat from a year ago. The company said its net income attributed to the shareholders exceeded 10 billion yuan (1.48 billion U.S. dollars) for two consecutive years. The net profit attributed to its shareholders in 2018 reached 10.28 billion yuan, down 10.9 percent from the previous year, it said. Its revenues rose 2 percent to 38.15 billion yuan. SIPG said it expanded the fund-raising channels for low-cost capital and its corporate finance fundamentals continued to be solid and sound. Shares of SIPG rose 1.14 percent to close at 5.33 yuan Tuesday when the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closed 1.36 percent higher at 2,570.34 points. Source : Xinhua
China Plans 6GW of Subsidy-Free Wind in Mongolia Green Tech Media reported that China is planning a 6-gigawatt subsidy-free wind complex to help power the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, according to China’s State Power Investment Corporation. The Ulanqab Municipal Development and Reform Commission approved the first phase of the JPY 42.5 billion (USD 6.3 billion) project, which was given planning approval in March last year, at a meeting held late December. The State Power Investment Corporation said that “After the project is put into production, it could deliver about 18.9 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region every year to help air pollution control in Beijing and the surrounding areas.” The Ulanqab Wind Power Base will spread over an area of almost 1,500 square miles in Siziwangqi, Inner Mongolia. SPIC claimed that “This is currently the largest single onshore wind power base in the world.” Source : Green Tech Media
