OPEC oil production drops to 10 month low in Venezuela Bloomberg reported that crude production from OPEC countries fell to a 10-month low in February, mainly due to maintenance at a field in the United Arab Emirates and continued output declines in Venezuela. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia have defied the skeptics by going deeper than their pledged cuts and maintaining them for long enough to deplete bloated inventories and boost prices. While the group says it’s committed to the deal for the remainder of the year, it’s also contending with a record-breaking surge in U.S. output that could undermine its efforts. Output from the 14 members of OPEC fell 80,000 barrels a day to 32.28 million a day in February, according to a Bloomberg News survey of analysts, oil companies and ship-tracking data. That’s the lowest since 31.89 million in April. Venezuela’s output dropped by 30,000 barrels a day to 1.68 million barrels. The Latin American nation is a big part of the reason for OPEC’s stellar implementation of promises to curb production. Its industry is suffering from a lack of investment and looming U.S. sanctions, sending output last year to the lowest since the 1980s. Oil production in the U.A.E. fell last month due to maintenance at fields that produce the Das Blend, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. The survey found the Persian Gulf country pumped 2.8 million barrels a day, a drop of 50,000 a day from January. Production in Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s largest producer, fell 80,000 barrels a day to 9.88 million barrels, the survey found. Libya’s output rose 70,000 barrels a day to 1.05 million, the highest since 2013. Source : Bloomberg
Exclusive: China taking first steps to pay for oil in yuan this year - sources Sumeet Chatterjee, Meng Meng 5 MIN READ HONG KONG/BEIJING (Reuters) - China is taking its first steps towards paying for imported crude oil in yuan instead of the U.S. dollar, three people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, a key development in Beijing’s efforts to establish its currency internationally. Shifting just part of global oil trade into the yuan is potentially huge. Oil is the world’s most traded commodity, with an annual trade value of around $14 trillion, roughly equivalent to China’s gross domestic product last year. A pilot program for yuan payment could be launched as early as the second half of this year, two of the people said. Regulators have informally asked a handful of financial institutions to prepare for pricing China’s crude imports in the yuan, said the three sources at some of the financial firms. “Being the biggest buyer of oil, it’s only natural for China to push for the usage of yuan for payment settlement. This will also improve the yuan liquidity in the global market,” said one of the people briefed on the matter by Chinese authorities. China is the world’s second-largest oil consumer and in 2017 overtook the United States as the biggest importer of crude oil. Its demand is a key determinant of global oil prices. Under the plan being discussed, Beijing could possibly start with purchases from Russia and Angola, one of the people said, although the source had no details of anything in the works. Both Russia and Angola, like China, are keen to break the dollar’s global dominance. They are also two of the top suppliers of crude oil to China, along with Saudi Arabia. [O/CHINA1] The move would mark a major step in reviving usage of the currency of the world’s second-largest economy for offshore payments after several years of on-again, off-again measures. If successful, it could also trigger shifting other product payments to the yuan, including metals and mining raw materials. All three sources, who spoke to Reuters on the condition that they not be named, said the plans were at early stages. Officials at some of China’s state oil companies said they had not heard of such plans.
Opec set for longest losing run since 2014 as supply fears ease - Report Bloomberg reported that oil rose as Opec and its allies were said to plan discussions about fresh production cuts next year, responding to recent increases in oil inventories amid surging US supply. Futures in New York gained 1 per cent. Ministers from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries gathering in Abu Dhabi this weekend will discuss options for 2019 including the scenario of fresh supply cuts, said delegates. That would mark an abrupt end to six months of supply increases, reflecting the prospect that US sanctions on Iran won’t be deep enough to prevent another surge of American shale oil creating a new surplus. Supply concerns that drove crude to a four year high last month faded on speculation the US would soften the blow of its sanctions on Iran to lower pump prices at home. Opec also pledged to offset any supply gaps. The group led by Saudi Arabia will gather in Abu Dhabi this weekend as they face a fresh surge of US shale oil threatening to unleash a new surplus in 2019. Mr Stephen Innes, Singapore-based head of trading for Asia Pacific at Oanda, said that The market has “more bearish overtones in terms of supply, with American crude output seen rising this year by the most ever.” West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery advanced 60 cents to USD 62.81 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 6:05 am local time. Total volume traded was 77 per cent above the 100-day average. Source : ET
Lukoil does not plan to cut oil output in 2019 - CEO Reuters citing, Russia's Lukoil does not plan to cut its oil production in 2019, CEO Mr Vagit Alekperov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. The firm increased output by 30,000 barrels a day in line with an agreement in June between OPEC and non-OPEC producers to ease curbs on global oil production, Mr Alekperov was quoted by RIA news agency as saying. Iranian sells more oil to private exporters to bypass US curbs Oil ministry news website SHANA reported that Iran sold 700,000 barrels of crude oil to private companies for export in a second round of sales aimed at countering US sanctions on the country's exports. Three unnamed companies paid USD 64.97 per barrel for two crude shipments of 245,000 barrels each and one shipment of 210,000 barrels, which were traded on Iran's energy bourse. Iran began selling crude oil to private companies for export in late October, just ahead of US sanctions on sectors including oil which came into effect on November 5. Crude oil trade is state-controlled in Iran. Earlier, private refining companies could only buy crude oil for exports of oil products. Iran said in July it would start oil sales to private firms as part of its efforts to keep exporting oil and would take other measures to counter sanctions after the United States told allies to cut all imports of Iranian oil from November. Digitalisation can save oil upstream business USD 73 billion a year - Woodmac Reuters quoted energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie as saying that energy firms could save an annual USD 73 billion within five years in oil and gas exploration and production by making better use of existing computing technology. Exploration and production, known as the upstream industry, requires energy firms to analyse huge amounts of seismic and geological data and to monitor and maintain offshore platforms and other complex assets, often in high-risk environments. In a report on how technology can be used for these tasks and potential savings, Wood Mackenzie (Woodmac) said many firms could spend less by buying technology and know-how from outside of the industry. Woodmac said that "Start-ups that merge Silicon Valley roots and domain knowledge may bring benefits to companies much more quickly than in-house approaches." The consultancy saw big savings from using technology that would make drilling faster, more accurate and less likely to end up with a dry well, and by using applications to predict when maintenance would be needed. Woodmac estimated the industry could save up to USD 12 billion a year on drilling, mostly in onshore and shallow waters. It said big savings were also available from the use of cloud computing services, particularly for smaller firms that did not have enough in-house computing power. Source : Reuters
Mr Putin has no plans for now to talk to Saudi king about oil markets - Kremlin Reuters quoted the Kremlin as saying that no phone call was planned between Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin and Saudi King Salman to discuss oil market volatility, but that one could be arranged at short notice if needed. Kremlin spokesman Mr Dmitry Peskov was answering a question about whether volatility on oil markets necessitated such a phone call. Source : Reuters
Mr Putin to attend TurkStream pipeline completion ceremony in Istanbul Sputnik reported that Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin will visit the Turkish city of Istanbul on November 19 to attend the ceremony of ending construction of the TurkStream gas pipeline, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said. “Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in the ceremony of ending construction of the sea section of the TurkStream gas pipeline. The event will take place in Istanbul on November 19,” Ushakov told the Izvestiya newspaper. The TurkStream pipeline project envisages the construction of a gas pipeline comprising two strings, each with the capacity to deliver 15.7 billion cubic meters (554 billion cubic feet) of gas per year. The first leg is set to bring Russian gas across the Black Sea directly to Turkey, while the other one will run across the Turkish territory to its western border, transporting natural gas to countries in the south and southeast of Europe. IEA forecast oil price to USD 88 per barrel in 2025, to USD 112 in 2040 Sputnik reported that the International Energy Agency (IEA) has improved its forecast for oil price by 6 percent to USD 88 per barrel in 2025 and by 0.9 percent to USD 112 per barrel in 2040, according to IEA’s World Energy Outlook 2018 report. In September, the oil price surpassed $80 per barrel for the first time since 2014 in light of geopolitical events, the decrease in Venezuelan output, and decisions made by major oil exporters, which affected production prospects, according to the report. "In the wake of the fallout from the 2014 oil price crash, the continued expansion of tight oil production in the United States and the prospect of major structural changes in oil consumption underpinned a view that the oil price was set to stay lower for longer, perhaps forever. The reality has been different," the report read. According to the report, taking into account current countries’ energy policies and their announced plans, oil price is projected to gradually increase from the average price of USD 52 per barrel in 2017 to USD 88 per barrel in 2025, USD 96 in 2030, USD 105 in 2035 and USD 112 in 2040. Moreover, the IEA expects world oil demand to increase from 94.8 million barrels per day in 2017 to 106.3 million barrels per day in 2040. The report said that "China and India are responsible for nearly half of the total increase in demand to 2040. The heavy lifting on supply is led initially by the United States, but later on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) steadily increases its share of total oil supply." The agency expects that in the long term trucks, petrochemicals, aviation and cars will be among the largest drivers of world oil demand. The decrease in the number of new upstream oil and gas projects could result in a supply crunch and a further growth of prices, the International Energy Agency said. The report said that "Today's flow of new upstream projects appears to be geared to the possibility of an imminent slowdown in fossil fuel demand, but in the New Policies Scenario this could well lead to a shortfall in supply and a further escalation in prices." According to the IEA, the largest supply crunch could be expected in the oil sector, as the average level of approvals of new conventional crude oil projects over the last three years "is only half the amount necessary to balance the market out to 2025." The World Bank Group said at the One Planet Summit in Paris in December that it would cease to finance upstream oil and gas projects after 2019 "to align its support to countries to meet their Paris goals." US tanker owners cash in on Iran sanctions and trade tensions Dow Jones reported that US sanctions on Iran and the trade battle with China have become a boon for owners of tankers, with daily freight rates at their highest in two years as ships shift their routes to load up crude from other oil-producing countries. Crude exports from Iran, the world’s fifth-biggest oil producer, have fallen about 50% since May when the US pulled out of a landmark deal curbing Iran’s nuclear program. A new set of sanctions against Tehran took effect at the start of this month. Oil traders and tanker brokers said Saudi Arabia has moved to fill the void of more than one million barrels a day. Meanwhile, China has stopped importing US crude as it pushes back against American tariffs on Chinese-made goods. Beijing is now sourcing crude oil from as far as West Africa. Before the trade dispute, China accounted for about a quarter of US crude exports. Those are now moving to other markets like South Korea, the Netherlands and the U.K., according to Peter Sand, chief shipping analyst at Bimco, an international association representing shipowners. This has significantly changed the routes and sailing times of very large crude carriers, or VLCCs, the supertankers that move oil across the oceans for the world’s energy giants. As buyers prepare for winter and the demand for heating oil peaks, freight rates more than quadrupled from September to October, to USD 45,000 a day. The chief executive of an Asia-based company with more than two dozen tankers, who asked not to be named, “We are making some good money for the first time since the beginning of 2017. Uncertainty is historically good for freight rates, and this time it’s happening during the high season. The question is how long it will last.” A U.S. decision to grant waivers to eight countries that allow them to continue buying Iranian crude is softening the impact of the sanctions and providing needed revenue to state-run National Iranian Tanker Co., the country’s flagship shipping company. Singapore and London brokers say around 65% of NITC tankers are moving oil cargoes to the countries with U.S. waivers, including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Turkey and Greece. These markets traditionally buy around 70% of Iran’s oil exports. The White House wants the flow to wind down, but tanker brokers say that is unlikely to happen soon, as a halt could push oil prices to around $100 a barrel, potentially undermining U.S. economic growth. The brokers said more NITC ships could be used as other tanker operators stay clear of Iran, fearing punitive action by Washington. NITC owns 38 VLCCs out of a global fleet of 733, and several smaller tankers. The company didn’t respond to requests for comment. Mr Sand said that “The big picture is that Iran crude exports won’t grind to a halt, and about a billion barrels a day will continue to move out. That’s more or less what they exported during the previous sanctions from 2012 to 2016 and it will bottom out around there.” VLCCs need daily charter rates of around $25,000 to break even, but rates were hovering well below that level since April 2017 until the October surge. Mr Patrick Rodgers, chief executive of Belgium-based Euronav, one of the world’s largest tanker operators, told The Wall Street Journal in October that he expects most of the 10 biggest tanker owners to be in the red this year. Although, crude hasn’t been taxed in the U.S.-China trade showdown, China has stopped buying it from the U.S. over the past two months. Brokers said they see increased China-destined cargoes from Nigeria, Angola and Libya, and that freight rates have increased because of the longer sailings. Source : Dow Jones
All rights reserved.

US shale oil output to hit record high 7.9 million bpd in December 2018 - EIA According to a monthly government forecast released, US crude oil output from seven major shale basins was expected to hit a record of 7.94 million barrels per day in December. The total oil output from the basins was expected to rise 113,000 bpd, driven largely by increases in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico, where output was forecast to climb by 63,000 bpd to about 3.7 million bpd in December, the US Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration (EIA) said. Output was also expected to rise in each of the other basins, except for the Haynesville, where it would remain unchanged at 43,000 bpd. However, US natural gas production was projected to increase to a record 75.1 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) in December. That would be up more than 1.0 bcfd over the November forecast and would be the 11th monthly increase in a row. A year ago in December output was just 63.9 bcfd. The EIA projected gas output would increase in all the big shale basins in December. Output in the Appalachia region, the biggest shale gas play, was set to rise 0.4 bcfd to a record 30.4 bcfd in December. Production in Appalachia was 26.9 bcfd in the same month a year ago. EIA said that producers drilled 1,577 wells and completed 1,308 in the biggest shale basins in October, leaving total drilled but uncompleted wells up 269 at a record high 8,545, according to data going back to December 2013.
