Mercedes-Benz eEconic Rolls Off at Worth Plant Strategic Research Institute Published on : 27 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am Daimler Truck is accelerating the electrification of its vehicle fleet: The Mercedes-Benz eEconic for municipal use is going into series production at the Wörth site in the southern Rhineland-Palatinate. Within a short period of time, the second model of the battery-electric Mercedes-Benz trucks will roll off the production line in Wörth, following the series launch of the eActros for urban distribution transport in October 2021. The eEconic was developed together with customers and, following intensive test series, has been undergoing practical trials with customers since May 2022. The first vehicle from series production will be handed over to Urbaser A/S, a company operating in the waste disposal sector in Denmark. Other customers have already opted for the series-production eEconic. The vehicles are to be delivered successively over the course of the year. The eEconic will be manufactured in the existing Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks assembly line, in parallel and flexibly alongside the trucks that will be powered by internal combustion engines. After the vehicle has been largely assembled, the eEconic’s electrification continues in the Future Truck Center, where, just like the eActros, it is equipped with the electric drive components. In several production steps, the high-voltage batteries and the charging unit are installed, among other things. Once all high-voltage components have been assembled, the entire system can be put into operation and the truck is ready to drive.

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Mercedes-Benz is positiever gestemd en verhoogde de outlook voor dit jaar, nadat de omzet en winst in het tweede kwartaal aantrokken dankzij een sterke vraag in combinatie met hogere prijzen. Dit bleek woensdag uit cijfers van de Duitse autofabrikant. In het afgelopen kwartaal steeg de aangepaste EBITA met 8 procent tot 4,9 miljard euro, terwijl de omzet met 7 procent aantrok tot 36,4 miljard euro, ondanks dat er minder auto's werden verkocht door een tekort aan chips. Door deze tekorten en andere verstoringen in de aanvoerketen, daalde de vrije kasstroom wel met 34 procent tot 1,4 miljard euro. De nettowinst van Mercedes trok aan van 3,0 tot 3,1 miljard euro. De resultaten omvatten enkel de huidige activiteiten, exclusief de voormalige Daimler Trucks & Buses-divisie, die in december werd afgestoten. Outlook Mercedes-Benz verhoogde enkele doelstellingen voor 2022, maar waarschuwde wel voor de nodige onzekerheid, wijzend op onder meer de oorlog in Oekraïne, de inflatie, de coronacrisis en de verstoringen in de aanvoerketen. Mercedes verwacht dat de jaaromzet significant hoger zal uitvallen dan in 2021. Eerder werd nog rekening gehouden met een licht hogere jaaromzet. Het EBIT-resultaat zal niet langer vergelijkbaar zijn met het resultaat in 2021, maar zal daar iets boven liggen. Mercedes-Benz Trucks Opens EV Charging Park in Worth Strategic Research Institute Published on : 3 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am Mercedes-Benz Trucks, together with its project partner the services division of Netze BW, has opened a charging park for customers near the Application Information Center BIC in Wörth am Rhein. At the eTruck Charging Park, electric truck customers can now test charging stations and charging concepts from various manufacturers as well as work with on-site experts from Mercedes-Benz Trucks to develop tailor-made charging solutions for their respective applications. Charging technology is provided for testing and combined with a comprehensive range of consulting services to help customers move smoothly into e-mobility. To start, the eTruck Charging Park has six charging stations from different manufacturers with outputs between 40 kW and 300 kW. Since charging technology continues to develop rapidly, this park has a modular structure so that charging stations can be added or replaced as necessary. Therefore the installation of an MCS charging station (megawatt charging system) is possible as a next step. By providing different charging options in one place, customers have the opportunity to compare them directly. At the same time, the eTruck Charging Park also tackles important issues such as grid connection, local energy generation, energy storage, and intelligent management of charging processes. For example, it will be possible to illustrate how charging processes can be integrated into existing logistics processes and thereby reduce energy costs. Test driving the eActros 300/400 for heavy-duty distribution haulage also gives customers the opportunity to get an immediate impression of the efficiency, range, and charging capabilities of electric trucks. With this as a basis, customers can sketch out a complete electric solution for their individual needs together with the on-site experts. A photovoltaic system on the roof of the charging park, which includes stationary storage, shows the possibilities of an efficient power supply for charging stations.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks Starts eActros Electric Truck Trials Strategic Research Institute Published on : 4 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am Mercedes-Benz Trucks has launched a new phase of practical tests for the eActros at Logistik Schmitt in the northern Black Forest: The battery electric eActros has now been approved as a truck-and-trailer combination with a total weight of 40 tonnes. The combination has been handed over to Logistik Schmitt for endurance testing. The vehicle is already available to order for customers in this configuration. Since the start of testing in 2019, the eActros has covered more than 70,000 kilometers on more than 7,000 trips. As part this process, it will continue to transport transmission housings and axle components to Daimler Truck plants in Rastatt and Gaggenau as part of a three-shift schedule, covering up to 300 km daily in the process. According to legislation, in order to tow trailers over 10 tons, tractor vehicles of heavy-duty truck-and-trailer combinations must feature a continuous braking system. In the eActros, this continuous brake system is provided by a trailer brake (High Power Brake Resistor or HPR for short) for battery electric vehicles. At Logistik Schmitt, the eActros 300 (6x2), designed for operation with a trailer, comes equipped with a center-axle Rockinger trailer coupling. The accompanying trailer is a center-axle trailer with a Junge curtainsider body. With an internal length of 7280 mm it boasts a permissible gross weight of 18 tons. The batteries of the eActros comprise either three (eActros 300) or four battery packs (eActros 400), each of which offers an installed capacity of 112 kWh and a usable capacity of around 97 kWh. With four battery packs, the eActros 400 has a range of up to 400 kilometers. The technological centerpiece is the drive unit – an electric rigid axle with two integrated electric motors and a two-speed transmission. Both liquid-cooled motors generate a continuous output of 330 kW as well as a top performance of 400 kW. In addition, when driving with foresight, electrical energy can be recovered through recuperation. The energy gained when braking is fed back into the batteries of the eActros, and is then once more available for driving. The eActros can be charged with up to 160 kW: Three battery packs require just over an hour to charge from 20 to 80 percent at a standard DC fast charging station generating a charging current of 400 A.

The all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro is an essential building block for this. The 100th vehicle was handed over in Mannheim.10 more eCitaro are currently on their way. With these, the fleet of Hamburger Hochbahn AG will consist of 83 solo buses and 27 articulated buses. A further 68 solo buses and five articulated buses have been ordered for this year as well as next year. These include the first models with the next-generation, even more powerful NMC3 batteries, which offer a longer range without having to recharge. Hamburger Hochbahn has been involved at every step of the eCitaro's rapid development, operating each battery generation, from NMC1 to NMC3, as well as solid-state batteries. The articulated bus for Hamburg comes equipped to be very passenger-friendly. Four doors ensure a fast flow of passengers at stops. A closing door warning system with a flashing red light strip informs passengers entering or exiting the vehicle that the door is about to move. Three special-purpose areas are provided for wheelchairs and child strollers. The wood look for the floor, fabric-covered seats and backrests for passenger seats manufactured in-house, plus leather straps convey a cozy feeling. The ambient lighting creates a pleasant atmosphere when it's dark outside. Passengers can charge their electronic devices on board using the numerous USB twin sockets. Two dual monitors are used for infotainment on board. The activated filter and antiviral function of the air-conditioning system reduces the risk of infection. Hamburger Hochbahn AG operates 116 routes, and more than 1300 stops, with around 1100 buses. These buses carry around 214 million passengers a year. Since 2020, this transport company has purchased locally zero-emission city buses only. Daimler Buses and Hochbahn have worked closely with one another for decades and are pushing innovative technologies forward together.

By running the all-electric eCitaro, the primary objective is to help improve the local air quality. The route is also marked by a number of substantial inclines. Initially, eleven eCitaro G articulated buses will be used during the holiday schedule. Later, up to 16 eCitaro will be in use on working days. Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe will be using two more eCitaro solo buses on route 81 on the outskirts of the city. This will connect Dresden’s Neustadt with the important commercial and electronics sites in the north and is characterized by a particularly challenging topography. In total, Dresdner Verkehrbetriebe has ordered 18 eCitaro G and two eCitaro buses. This means that around 15 percent of the bus fleet has now been fully electrified. The vehicles that have already been delivered have been undergoing intensive testing since June and have already covered more than 20,000 kilometers without any problems. The buses are then charged at the depot at night. In addition, charging is also carried out during the day at the route terminus using a pantograph.

Western Star has redesigned the entire X-Series to meet customer needs for greater safety, efficiency and durability. The all-new 57X is designed primarily for customers who travel on long-distance routes, especially in the small-fleets segment or as owner operators in contrast to the 47X and 49X series, which mainly serve the special and construction site vehicle customers (vocational segment). Different variants of the 57X are offered to the various applications. The shorter and the longer cab versions both are available with different ceiling heights between 152 and 183 cm, the long version includes the bed and driver's lounge. Improved insulation, a larger windshield and easy-to-use ventilation and temperature controls enhance operator comfort. The LED lighting package gives the 57X a distinctive look and helps improve safety with optimized road illumination. Numerous other comfort features and options also allow the customer to further customize the truck to the driver's needs. The new Western Star 57X is about 6 percent more efficient than its predecessor, the 500XE, making it the most efficient Western Star truck ever. Customers can choose from different engine options. The Detroit DD13 Gen 5, DD15 Gen 5 and DD16 engines all offer maximum efficiency with proven performance. The 57X is available with Detroit DT12 Direct or High-Speed AMT transmissions, which reduce fuel consumption and increase efficiency while improving shifting and reducing wear. Intelligent Powertrain Management anticipates terrain and adjusts to road conditions to further maximize efficiencies. Various optimizations to the chassis and cab further reduce the fuel consumption figures of the new 57X. The new CATL plant in Debrecen in Hungary will supply battery cells for European production sites in Germany and Hungary. The new factory in Hungary expands a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and CATL which was first announced in August 2020 and marks the next milestone in a local-for-local purchasing strategy. Mercedes-Benz has chosen CATL, a global leader of new energy innovative technologies, to expand its global procurement of battery cells, as the world’s most valuable luxury automotive brand plans to build more than 200 Gigawatt Hours in battery capacity by the end of the decade. Austrian Postbus Orders 11 Mercedes-Benz eCitaros Buses Strategic Research Institute Published on : 24 Aug, 2022, 5:30 am Austrian Postbus AG will be putting eleven new Mercedes-Benz eCitaros into operation. These low-floor solo buses will be used on behalf of the transport association Ost-Region VOR for the Schweinbarther Kreuz project in the southern Weinviertel region of Lower Austria. They are the first all-electric Mercedes-Benz buses in regular service on Austria’s roads. The current project is a public transport hub connecting the train stations at Gänserndorf, Wolkersdorf, and Mistelbach in the southern Weinviertel region. Regular bus service is provided at hourly intervals. Eight buses are in constant operation on two routes. During this time, the batteries in two other buses are rapidly charged with up to 300 kW in barely 30 minutes in Gänserndorf, thus avoiding unproductive downtimes. The buses are also charged overnight in Gänserndorf as well as in Mistelbach and Wolkersdorf. EVN is currently setting up charging stations on behalf of VOR. These are expected to go into operation in August. This means 100% green power coverage. The buses are equipped with a wheelchair area, a folding ramp at door 2, an enclosed driver’s cab, a passenger counting system, and two TFT monitors for passenger information. In addition, all eleven vehicles have a pantograph for rapid intermediate charging of the high-voltage batteries. Furthermore, these eCitaros are equipped with the Omniplus ON Bus Data Center real-time communication module. This means that the control center can constantly monitor all vehicle operating conditions, such as battery charge level or remaining range, as well as all diagnostic messages. ÖBB Postbus is even going one step further and integrating vehicle data from the Daimler Buses Cloud into its own fleet management systems. In the last ten years, Postbus AG has added a total of 579 Mercedes-Benz buses to its fleet. Mit dem Hochlauf der Elektromobilität werde die Nachfrage nach spezifischen Rohstoffen steigen, insbesondere nach Kobalt und Lithium. Mit dem Dialog solle auch die Zusammenarbeit mit strategischen Partnern vor Ort ausgebaut werden. Im Rahmen einer geplanten Partnerschaft mit dem Unternehmen Rock Tech Lithium sollen Mercedes-Benz und seine Batteriepartner mit bis zu 10 000 Tonnen Lithiumhydroxid pro Jahr beliefert werden. Die beabsichtigte Zusammenarbeit solle 2026 starten und werde einen entscheidenden Schritt für die Versorgung mit hochwertigem Lithium markieren, das in Deutschland verarbeitet werden soll, hieß es von Mercedes. The coil weighing around 20 tonnes is significantly carbon-reduced steel that corresponds to the “Pro” category in Klöckner & Co’s proprietary metric for green steel. Emissions from resource extraction through to production totaled less than 500 kg of carbon per tonne of steel, that’s over 80% less than the average of around 2.5 tonnes of carbon per ton of steel via the blast furnace route. Het automerk gaat via het bedrijf investeren in de ontwikkeling van zonnedaken en zonneparken om zijn klanten met een elektrische auto groen te laten rijden. Met zijn ‘Green Charging’-initiatief garandeert Mercedes-Benz al dat elke bestuurder van een volledig batterij-elektrische auto de eerste 200.000 kilometer op groene stroom rijdt. Dit wordt gerealiseerd met de aankoop van Garanties van Oorsprong waardoor groene stroom aan het stroomnet wordt toegevoegd; het equivalent van de door de Mercedes-Benz-bestuurders geladen energie. De hoeveelheid energie die daarvoor nodig is, wordt lokaal opgewekt door middel van windmolens of zonnepanelen. Nederlandse zonne-energie Nu gaat het automerk nog een stap verder en investeert het via ZonnepanelenDelen in Nederlandse zonne-energieprojecten. De samenwerking houdt het volgende in: per megawattuur opgewekte groene energie via het Green Charging-initiatief investeert Mercedes-Benz in de Benelux via ZonnepanelenDelen in de ontwikkeling van zonnedaken en -parken. ZonnepanelenDelen gebruikt deze opbrengst om gebouw- en grondeigenaren aan financiering te helpen wanneer zij zonnepanelen willen installeren. Zo kan er nog meer zonne-energie worden toegevoegd aan het Nederlandse stroomnet. Gebruiksfase Mercedes-Benz streeft ernaar om tegen 2030 volledig elektrisch te gaan, daar waar de marktomstandigheden het toelaten. Het is een belangrijke stap in de realisatie van de zogeheten Ambition 2039-strategie waarmee Mercedes-Benz tegen het einde van het volgende decennium een volledig CO2-neutraal modellengamma wil aanbieden. Plug & Charge Available for Mercedes-Benz Plug-in Hybrids Strategic Research Institute Published on : 15 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am The electric luxury model EQS and the business saloon EQE kicked things off and now Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrids of the current generation are also being equipped with Plug & Charge in combination with the Mercedes me connect service, Mercedes me Charge. Mercedes-Benz is one of the first car manufacturers to offer this function for plug-in hybrids, making the convenient authentication option available to a wider range of customers. Charging and payment are even easier for customers with Plug & Charge, as it eliminates the need for manual authentication. The charging station communicates directly with the vehicle, provided that the respective public charging station is compatible with Plug & Charge. Drive to the charging station, open the flap, plug in – and the power starts to flow. Fiddling with a charging card, app or head unit for authentication is now a thing of the past. This is made possible by the integrated communication between the vehicle and the charging station via the charging cable. The ISO 15118 standard ensures that the communication between the vehicle and the infrastructure, as well as the stored contract data, are protected against manipulation. The vehicle and the charging station must both work according to this standard. Everything else is handled automatically through the Mercedes me connect service, Mercedes me Charge. Customers only need to have their active charging contract stored in Mercedes me Charge. Anyone who already drives a current C-Class or S-Class plug-in hybrid will be able to enjoy the new and uncomplicated charging solution. An OTA update installs the necessary certificates in the vehicle without requiring any further action. With this, the company that invented the automobile is emphasising its aspiration to play a leading role not only in electric driving, but also in vehicle software. In addition to the current C-Class and S-Class, which allow for Plug & Charge via OTA update, the new GLC supports Plug & Charge ex-factory. For this, the plug-in hybrids need to be equipped with the optional direct-current charging system (DC charging) and the customer needs to activate the Plug & Charge service in the overview of services. The charging station details in the head unit or in the Mercedes me App show whether a charging station is compatible with Plug & Charge. Customers can also search specifically for suitable charging stations. Plug & Charge is the fourth and most convenient charging access option. In addition, customers have the option of accessing charging via MBUX in the vehicle’s head unit, in the Mercedes me App, or via the Mercedes me Charge charging card. Plug & Charge is available at over 1,800 IONITY fast charging points in Europe and at Aral pulse fast charging points in Germany. In Germany alone, there are around 700 Aral pulse charging points, and the network is continuously growing and expanding – including beyond Germany. Mercedes-Benz and the charging network operators are always working to extend Plug & Charge to further charging stations.
Amazon & Rhenus to Test Daimler Truck’s eActros on LongHaul Strategic Research Institute Published on : 21 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am Mercedes-Benz Trucks will begin real-world testing of its battery-electric heavy-duty long-distance truck at an early stage. Amazon and Rhenus will test the eActros LongHaul in real-world operations as early as 2023. The two companies have each signed a letter of intent with Mercedes-Benz Trucks. The logistics service provider Rhenus will use the e-truck in many different business areas in order to be able to gain as much experience as possible. To this end the vehicle will be tested, among other applications, in the transport of sea containers and with a tarpaulin trailer for its functionality and suitability for use in daily operations. The first prototypes of the electric truck are already undergoing intensive testing. The eActros LongHaul will also be tested on public roads this year. Series production is planned for 2024. The eActros LongHaul will have a range of around 500 kilometers on a single battery charge and is capable of high-performance charging – so-called megawatt charging. A “concept prototype” of the eActros LongHaul will be the highlight of Mercedes-Benz Trucks at this year’s IAA Transportation in September in Hanover. Amazon and Rhenus are planning to test the eActros LongHaul as part of the test project “High performance charging for long-haul trucking” (HoLa), under the auspices of the VDA. The aim of HoLa is the development, operation and scientific support of a high-performance charging infrastructure for battery-powered long-distance transport. In addition to Daimler Truck, other consortium partners from industry and research are involved in the project. CCS charging stations will initially be installed at several locations along the A2 between Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia. As the project progresses the selected sites are to be equipped with charging stations that enable the megawatt charging system (MCS). Daimler Truck is extensively involved in the development of the new MCS charging standard as an active member of CharIN – the global association for the standardization of charging infrastructure. The HoLa charging points are to be installed at several locations along the A2. These are located both directly on the motorway and in logistics centers. In this way, the system can be tested under real-world conditions and authentic user experience can be gained. One focus of testing is on the rapid charging of e-trucks: the battery electric vehicles should be able to be charged at high power within the statutory break time of 45 minutes. A team from Mercedes-Benz Trucks specializing in customer testing will accompany the customers throughout the project period. The e-truck drivers will receive extensive instruction on how to use the vehicle and charging system. Feedback from drivers will be collected in the form of regular interviews and questionnaires to be consolidated and then evaluated for the further development of the prototypes and charging technology. Measuring instruments are also installed in the e-trucks, which collect data while driving and transmit it to Mercedes-Benz Trucks for evaluation. Selected data will then be made available to the research institutions involved.
Constellium Supplying Aluminium for Mercedes Benz Body Strategic Research Institute Published on : 22 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am Leading aluminium maker Constellium announced that it is supplying aluminium Auto Body Sheet solutions for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class produced in Europe, China, and South Africa and sold around the world. Constellium provides aluminium for the hood, roof, tailgate, and fenders of the Mercedes-Benz model. For the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Constellium provides its Surfalex solution for the outer closures to deliver exceptional surface quality for sharp designs as well as to maximize corrosion resistance. For the inner closure parts, Constellium Securalex responds to the most demanding pedestrian safety requirements. Auto Body Sheet solutions for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class are delivered by Constellium’s ASI-certified plant in Neuf-Brisach in France. Constellium also supplies the front Crash Management System for this vehicle from its plant in Gottmadingen in Germany.
Foton Daimler Automotive Produces Mercedes-Benz Truck Strategic Research Institute Published on : 26 Sep, 2022, 5:30 am Daimler Truck & Foton Motor’s JV Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive has celebrated the first locally produced Mercedes-Benz trucks with an inauguration ceremony at its new state-of-the-art production site in Huairou in Beijing. The new facility covers an area of more than 400,000 square meters and provides a highly-flexible and scalable production line following the lean production principle. The production portfolio of BFDA at the new plant in Huairou comprises of two tractor product lines, both developed based on the flagship model, Mercedes-Benz Actros, from Daimler Truck’s global heavy-duty platform. Since the launch of the first generation of Actros in 1996, more than 1.5 million units of the model were sold worldwide. The localized Mercedes-Benz Actros from BFDA comes with the state-of-the-art third-generation OM471 engine, as the benchmark choice for optimized transportation efficiency. The Mercedes-Benz Actros C model is the upgrading choice for customers with flexible logistics patterns. Both localized product lines are thoroughly engineered according to Mercedes-Benz Trucks standards to reliably serve the needs of customers in China. Local know-how, value contribution and supplier development, combined with Daimler Truck’s global Research & Development and manufacturing expertise ensure highest quality standards. Parallel to the locally-produced Actros and Actros C tractor models, the import of Mercedes-Benz trucks to China continues with focus on chassis business for special applications like firefighting, concrete pumps and even recreational vehicles. In addition, the existing Auman brand remains as a solid foundation for Daimler Truck’s joint venture BFDA. BFDA is a 50:50 joint venture between Daimler Truck and Foton Motor. The company produces and distributes Auman-branded heavy-duty trucks in China, and starts the local production and distribution of Mercedes-Benz heavy-duty trucks in 2022 at a dedicated Mercedes-Benz Trucks business unit under the joint venture roof.
Verkoop bestelbussen Mercedes-Benz in de lift 4 procent hoger op driekwart van het jaar. (ABM FN-Dow Jones) De verkoop van bestelbussen van Mercedes-Benz is in de periode januari tot en met september van dit jaar gestegen. Dit maakte de Duitse autobouwer dinsdag bekend. In de eerste negen maanden van dit jaar verkocht de fabrikant 99.700 busjes, een toename met 4 procent op jaarbasis. Van de verkochte bestelbussen waren er 3.300 elektrisch aangedreven, goed voor een stijging met een een derde op jaarbasis, aldus Mercedes.
