ArcelorMittal to resume production at Bosnia steel plant - Reuters 07:43 AM | ArcelorMittal S.A. (MT) | By: SA Editor Carl Surran, SA News Editor ArcelorMittal (NYSE:MT) is set to resume production at its Zenica steel plant in Bosnia in the coming days, Reuters reported Tuesday, after halting output in November due to a drop in steel demand in Europe. Two of the plant's operations, including a blast furnace, will restart in the coming days, according to the report, citing the head of ArcelorMittal's (MT) local trade union, which signed a wage bargaining agreement with management on Monday following a two-month strike. The plant also will resume taking deliveries of iron ore from the Prijedor mines the company operates in northern Bosnia, the trade union head reportedly said. The ArcelorMittal (MT) Zenica plant, which produces ~700K metric tons/year of liquid steel and employs 2,200 workers, was Bosnia's largest exporter last year. 03haR

Interessante achtergrond informatie: worldsteel: Steel's Sustainable Journey Unveiled By Strategic Research Institute on Jan 10, 2024 09:49 am Synopsis: Steel, an indispensable force driving progress across industries, confronts its environmental impact. The World Steel Association's commitment to the Paris Agreement is evident, advocating for reduced CO2 emissions, innovative collaborations, and transparent accountability. Initiatives such as the Climate Policy and Step Up program highlight the industry's strides toward sustainability, aiming to mitigate emissions, foster efficiency, and embrace circularity. Article: The world relies heavily on steel, a vital component touching various sectors, yet its production contributes substantially to CO2 emissions. Acknowledging this, the World Steel Association is resolute in reducing the industry's environmental footprint. In 2020, 1 metric ton of steel production emitted 1.891 metric tons of CO2, totaling 2.6 billion metric tons of CO2 for 1,860 million metric tons of steel, comprising 7% to 9% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The association's Climate Policy embodies three crucial principles: emission reduction, collaborative partnerships, and transparent reporting. This policy underlines the industry's commitment to sustainability through emissions reduction, partnerships for shared progress, and accountability for environmental impact. Three fundamental elements are pivotal for industry transformation: improved production processes, innovative product development, and the adoption of circular economy principles. Embracing these elements can revolutionize industries and steer them toward sustainability, where the steel sector aims to play a leading role. Efficiency improvements, technological innovations, and scrap utilization are pivotal strategies to reduce emissions. The Step Up program, aiming for efficiency practices, could potentially decrease emissions by up to 50% in scrap-based facilities and 20% in ore-based steelmaking sites. Utilizing scrap in steel production significantly reduces emissions and resource consumption, highlighting its importance in the industry's sustainable journey. The upcoming availability of scrap from steel produced in the early 2000s promises a reduction in emissions. While existing ironmaking processes heavily rely on fossil fuels, transformative approaches involving carbon capture, hydrogen substitution, and electrolysis based methods are under development. These approaches seek to minimize or eliminate CO2 emissions from ironmaking. Implementing low-emission steelmaking technologies requires a varied approach, depending on resource availability and policy support. Cost implications, increased operational and capital expenses, will accompany this transition, posing challenges for the industry. Governments, industries, customers, and investors play crucial roles in transitioning to low-carbon steel production. Following wage talks and a settlement to a two-month strike, operations at ArcelorMittal Zenica are set to resume, offering hope for the region's economy reliant on the steel industry. Article: ArcelorMittal, a significant player in the steel industry, is preparing to revive operations at its Bosnia plant, a response to the ebb in European steel demand. The Zenica-based plant, which faced a hiatus owing to reduced demand, is now on the brink of revitalization following recent wage discussions and the resolution of a protracted two-month strike. Reports indicate specific segments of the plant, including the blast furnace, are scheduled for a swift resumption in the impending days. This resurgence encompasses not only the revival of the plant but also the reinstatement of iron ore deliveries from ArcelorMittal Prijedor mines situated in northern Bosnia. The ArcelorMittal Zenica facility, a pivotal contributor of approximately 700,000 metric tons of liquid steel annually and a workplace for over 2,200 individuals, held a prominent status as Bosnia's principal exporter in the previous year. The abrupt pause in November was a consequence of the continued dip in European steel consumption, primarily attributed to the reverberations of the Ukraine conflict, resulting in escalated energy prices and production costs. This operational halt triggered a domino effect, stalling iron ore deliveries from the Omarska mines in the same region, a substantial supplier to the Zenica plant and employer to approximately 850 workers. The extended cessation raised concerns among governmental authorities and trade unions, who highlighted the potential negative implications on Bosnia's economy, particularly the transport sector. Conclusion: ArcelorMittal's imminent reboot of operations in its Bosnia plant heralds a promising resurgence in the regional steel industry, marking positive strides after a hiatus due to challenging market conditions. This anticipated revival, facilitated by productive negotiations and labor agreements, not only promises economic rejuvenation but also stands as a symbol of stability for the workforce and the broader Bosnian economy. Nu wel te lezen. :-) 09 JAN 15:33 ArcelorMittal continues raising coil offers in Europe Sources in the European market tell Kallanish that ArcelorMittal – as well as other major suppliers – is continuing to raise coil offer levels. The move is supported by the fact that long-term negotiations for coil supply to the automotive sector advanced positively in the final weeks of last year. ArcelorMittal is now reported to be offering hot rolled coil in northern Europe at €800/tonne ($874) ex-works, up some €50/t compared with offers registered in December. Hot-dip galvanized coil is offered at €920/t ex-works. Further support to domestic coil prices in Europe has come from the anticipated over-utilisation of EU tariff-free safeguard quotas for HRC imports in the first quarter. Importers are expected to be forced to pay as much as 8% duties on their imports from countries such as Japan and Egypt this quarter, further reducing the possibility of this material remaining competitive in the EU market. Several buyer sources have expressed astonishment at this quick follow-up price increase, given the economy has hardly shown signs of a major recovery in real demand. Prior to this latest increase, a Swiss trader says he saw the latest prices for HRC delivered both north and south of the Alps at €730-750/t, meaning closer to €700/t ex-works than to the €750/t ex-works envisaged by EU mills in December. A German manager of a larger distribution group says he would have not even considered offers recently that were above €700/t, making the €800/t now targeted “out of sight”. Emanuele Norsa | Italy

Beckers, committed to sustainability, has conducted a peer-reviewed life cycle analysis (LCA) study revealing that a full transition from current solvent-borne coil coating to UV/EB-cured systems can potentially reduce the carbon footprint by up to 50 percent. The company is making substantial investments in advancing UV/EB curing technology, aiming for widespread adoption within the industry. As part of this commitment, Beckers is constructing a 300 m2 Sustainable Innovation Centre in Liverpool, housing the UV/EB development center and long-term sustainable R&D technologies. This collaborative journey between Beckers and ArcelorMittal represents a paradigm shift in the coil coating industry, emphasizing the importance of innovation, sustainability, and collective efforts in driving positive environmental change. Conclusion: Beckers and ArcelorMittal's joint venture in pioneering EB curing for coil coating emerges as a beacon of innovation and sustainability. The successful implementation of Radcure technology not only promises environmental benefits in terms of reduced emissions and increased efficiency but also sets a new standard for the industry. This collaborative effort signifies a transformative leap towards a more sustainable future in coil coating, echoing the commitment of both companies to environmental stewardship.
