The introduction of the new option class on ThromboGenics is the first one on a Belgian biotech company. ThromboGenics is an integrated biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing innovative ophthalmic medicines. The Company’s lead product, JETREA® (ocriplasmin), has been approved by the US FDA for the treatment of symptomatic VMA. The US launch is planned from mid January 2013. In March 2012, ThromboGenics signed a strategic partnership with Alcon (Novartis) for the commercialization of ocriplasmin outside the United States. The JETREA® European Marketing Authorisation Application is currently under review by the European Medicines Agency. A decision on European approval is expected in the first half of 2013. To mark today’s special occasion, Chris Buyse, CFO of ThromboGenics, rang the opening bell which denotes the opening of NYSE Euronext's European market, together with Vincent Van Dessel, CEO of NYSE Euronext Brussels.
A bon entendeur, salut.

ThromboGenics, flagship of the Flemish biotechnology sector ThromboGenics, the Flemish biopharmaceutical company that specialises in ophthalmic medicines, is geared to enter the American market this month with the launch of its promising eye medicine ocriplasmin under the Jetrea brand. For the 69-year-old ThromboGenics chairman Désiré Collen the launch can be considered as the cherry on top of a long scientific career, that made him the second most quoted Belgian scientist. Collen, who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Medicine on several occasions, developed the anti-bloodclotting t-PA drug in 1979. Marketed by pharmaceutical giant Genentech, the medecine was used to treat between five and seven million heart attack victims in the eighties and nineties. Collen, who studied medicine and chemistry in Louvain, developed t-PA in the laboratory of professor Mark Verstraete at the Louvain University. The drug secured 143 million dollars 110 million euros of patent rights. Half of this sum was cashed by Collen himself. With this money he founded Thrombogenics in 1998 and started the research on a medecine for the treatment of cerebral thrombosis, hence the name Thrombogenics. Collen and his colleagues managed to develop a promising protein, microplasmine. But the lack of funds forced them to continue their research in another direction, as the cerebral thrombosis medecine would have required at least 300 million of investments. The development of microplasmin had cost some 100 million euros at that moment but could also be used in a faster and cheaper way for the treatment of a rare eye disease. Mid January the sales campaign of the medecine will be launched on the US market. "We expect a lot of it", Collen says. "Analysts predict a turnover of several hundreds of millions of euros each year." The seamless approval last year by the American drug agency, the Food and Drug Administration FDA, signalled a great start for the company and ThromboGenics has since become a hype, with a share price that shot up by more than 120% last year. With a market value of 1.5 billion euros the company is well positioned to succeed Telenet on the Bel-20 Brussels stock exchange. ThromboGenics is the first Belgian biotechnology company to receive the green light from the FDA for a new drug, putting it in the lead as flagship of the Flemish biotechnology industry. With companies like Ablynx, Devgen, Galapagos and TiGenix, this sector is firmly positioned in Flanders. “The success is largely due to the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology. This government institution does fantastic work,” says Collen, who passed on the operational reins to CEO De Haes some years ago. With the support of Chris Buysse as CFO, the two have things smoothly under control, with Collen keeping an eye on all activities as chairman. He hopes to take the company, whose staff has since grown to 140, into the future and has his mind set on keeping ThromboGenics on the global map with continued product development. Microplasmine will be used to develop more eye medications, with a new treatment for diabetes also being considered. To secure the future, they plan to keep their options open. “We could either fill the pipeline ourselves or do a takeover. Or we may even be approached for a takeover,” suggests Collen. But they do not plan to wait for the latter to happen as they are currently sitting quite pretty after the deal they clinched with the Swiss multinational Novartis last year to sell microplasmine outside the US. ThromboGenics have roughly ten years to earn a return on their investment as the patent for Microplasmine, which was registered in 2001, expires in 2023.www.expatica.com/be/news/local_news/t...
Retina specialists ready for on-label use of ocriplasmin for vitreomacular adhesion January 8, 2013 ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A newly approved drug is poised for on-label clinical use in patients with vitreomacular adhesion, a speaker said here. Julia A. Haller, MD, OSN Retina/Vitreous Board Member, reviewed clinical trial results for Jetrea (ocriplasmin, ThromboGenics) at the Current Concepts in Ophthalmology meeting. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved ocriplasmin in October 2012. Ocriplasmin, the first drug indicated for symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion, induces posterior vitreous separation. Its commercial launch is Jan. 14. “We are moving very excitingly into a new era of pharmacologic intervention in vitreomacular disease,” Haller said. Early phase 2 studies showed that ocriplasmin was well-tolerated and yielded a discernible biologic effect, Haller said. Results of the randomized phase 3 MIVI-TRUST study, with 219 patients assigned to receive ocriplasmin and 107 patients assigned to receive placebo, showed that almost 30% of patients had non-surgical resolution of focal adhesion at 28 days, Haller said. Non-surgical closure of full-thickness macular hole was the real success story, Haller said. Researchers have long sought the “holy grail of non-surgical management of vitreomacular pathology,” she said, and the advent of ocriplasmin heralds a “new era of pharmacologic intervention in vitreomacular disease.” “We can start to explore diseases previously not well understood, not just macular hole and vitreomacular traction, but perhaps also multifactorial disease processes where not having that vitreous scaffolding might be an advantage to patients, particularly high-risk patients with macular degeneration or patients with diabetic retinopathy,” Haller said. According to a ThromboGenics news release, the price of ocriplasmin will be set at $3,950 per vial. Disclosure: Haller is a consultant/advisor for Alcon, Genentech, Regeneron, Second Sight and ThromboGenics.www.healio.com/ophthalmology/retina-v...
