AMG - Lithium hydroxide factory EU 2023 (updates)
Volgen
Advanced Metallurgical Group - Lithium The lithium hydroxide will be produced in a plant operated by AMG Lithium at Chemiepark Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany EU. The first module will be commissioned in 2023 with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons of lithium hydroxide. According to AMG Lithium Managing Director Stefan Scherer, additional modules will follow in subsequent years, increasing capacity to up to 100,000 tons. The availability of battery materials is the key driver for the sustainable success of the mega trends electromobility and stationary energy storage. The new plant will process the lithium hydroxide so that it can be used in the production for electric vehicle batteries. According to AMG Lithium, this is the first plant in Germany to be able to produce lithium hydroxide in this degree of purity. AMG Lithium combines extensive lithium expertise in R&D, production and marketing with a reliable and safe raw material base from a group-owned mine in Brazil. AMG Lithium is committed to providing innovative and high- quality battery materials to their customers in the European battery industry. We strive to become the #1 supplier for the battery market in Europe with the highest quality Battery Grade Lithium Hydroxide and next generation high-performance battery materials. amglithium.com/home

Lithium carbonate prices in China rose to above 197,000 yuan per tonne, the highest on record, as tight supplies struggle to meet the accelerating demand. Prices continuously increase as auto makers and battery manufacturers face dire need of the metal amid a global push for less-polluting modes of transportation. Fitch Solutions upwardly revised its forecasts for lithium carbonate and hydroxide prices from 2021 to 2026 to assimilate higher sales of electric vehicles and energy storage batteries, used in portable electronics and electric mobility devices. Further, research from the Bank of America’s global research department states global electric vehicle industry faces the imminent threat that its battery supply could run out as early as 2025. Prices for lithium carbonate have increased over 320% since the beginning of 2021.

www.argusmedia.com/en/news/2246714-au...
www.fnarena.com/index.php/2021/09/13/... " Spodumene prices will go higher given the tightness in supply and the potential margin that can be captured and Credit Suisse has outlined a “blue sky” lithium price scenario that envisages lithium carbonate reaching US$21,000/t and spodumene reaching US$1700/t in the short term, yet this then could impede battery competitiveness and temper enthusiasm for any upside. The broker's base case price calculations imply margins close to 40% for Chinese factories that are processing lithium carbonate and hydroxide from spodumene. This appears implausibly high for a conversion process, and is not sustainable as the industry has no barriers to entry, while such margins will attract competitors. Moreover, lithium miners are building hydroxide plants in Australia and there are more Chinese factories under construction. Credit Suisse believes the conversion industry will subsequently lose its pricing power and surrender its margins to miners upstream, where the real tightness lies, and slightly softer carbonate and hydroxide prices will advantage cathode/battery makers downstream."

www.argusmedia.com/en/news/2246714-au... Australian lithium hydroxide plant focuses on batteries Published date: 23 August 2021 Share: Australia's newly commissioned Kwinana downstream lithium plant has produced chemical-grade lithium hydroxide and is now focusing on the output of battery-grade product for the lithium-ion battery market. Commissioning of the first train of the 24,000 t/yr Kwinana lithium hydroxide refinery south of Perth has been carried out with unit processes sequentially hot commissioned on a batch basis, said 49pc shareholder Australia-based resources firm IGO. China's Tianqi Lithium has a 51pc stake in the venture. Its focus will now move to continuous operations and gradually boosting output to battery-grade lithium hydroxide for qualification by offtake customers. First saleable lithium hydroxide is scheduled for October-December and battery-grade product for customer accreditation will be produced during January-March next year. Nameplate production capacity is expected by the end of 2022. Lithium hydroxide is preferred over lithium carbonate by many cathode manufacturers and auto producers because of its sustainability characteristics and ability to add longevity to electric vehicle and energy storage batteries. Prices have surged this year on the rebound in the global lithium market. Argus assessed lithium hydroxide minimum 56.5pc ex-works China at $15-15.68/kg on 20 August, almost double that of $7.52-8.21/kg on 22 February. IGO in June completed a $1.4bn deal to form a joint venture with Tianqi for its stake in the $700mn Kwinana plant and an indirect 25pc shareholding in hard rock lithium mine Greenbushes. They plan to commission a second 24,000 t/yr lithium hydroxide production train at Kwinana in 2024 with further plans to add third and fourth trains to take capacity to 96,000 t/yr. Australia's next lithium hydroxide plant is expected to be commissioned towards the end of this year by the 60:40 joint venture of US-based Albemarle and Australia-based Mineral Resources. The plant at Kemerton, southwest of Perth, will initially comprise two 25,000 t/yr production trains with scope for further capacity up to around 100,000 t/yr. Chilean lithium firm SQM and Australia-based conglomerate Wesfarmers are in the early stages of developing another lithium hydroxide plant at Kwinana. This 50,000 t/yr project is expected to produce its first output in 2024. By Angus Macmillan
