Global Steel Climate Council formed for Climate-Focused Standards Strategic Research Institute Published on : 18 Nov, 2022, 5:11 am An international group of leading steel manufacturers have announced the formation of a coalition to urge the United States and European Union to adopt a global emission standard that incentivizes steelmakers to use the cleanest steel production process available. The new coalition, the Global Steel Climate Council, supports a global standard that accelerates the transition to low-emission steel and recognizes the potential of the recycled, circular steel model to reduce carbon emissions. The GSCC includes more than 20 members and supporters who are steel manufacturers, trade associations, end users, scrap metal suppliers and non-governmental organizations. The founding members of the GSCC are: the Steel Manufacturers Association, Nucor Corporation, CELSA Group, Steel Dynamics, Commercial Metals Company and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. The primary focus of the GSCC is to establish a standard, focusing on the following guiding principles 1. Reducing GHG emissions from the global steel industry 2. Establishing a standard that is technology/production method agnostic 3. Establishing a standard that has a system boundary that includes Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions 4. Establishing a standard that aligns with a science-based glide path to achieve a 1.5 degree scenario by the year 2050 5. Providing relevant information on sustainable steelmaking to appropriate decision makers GSCC's specific purposes are to focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the global steel industry by supporting reduction methods that are technology agnostic, have a system boundary that includes Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and align with a science-based glide path to achieve a 1.5 degree Celsius scenario by 2050. The United States and European Union are negotiating a new emissions standard for steel production. The GSCC asserts that any agreement should focus on the amount of emissions generated, not on how steel is made. The majority of the world's steel production is extremely carbon-intensive because it primarily relies on mined and processed coal, iron ore and limestone. However, other steelmakers, including those producing over 70% of all US and over 40% of all European manufactured steel today, use electric arc furnaces that principally input recycled scrap metal to produce steel, generating significantly lower carbon emissions.

New Cranes Improve Reliability for Valbruna Slater Stainless Strategic Research Institute Published on : 1 Dec, 2022, 6:02 am RM Hoist reported that US’s special steelmaker Valbruna Slater Stainless is constantly updating its production capabilities and has upgrading its overhead cranes, which are used to move ?nished goods and raw materials for stainless steel processing. Valbruna Slater Stainless wanted to replace two older DC-powered cranes with more powerful AC cranes, but still retain the existing bridge structure. The older cranes had become unreliable, and the hoists were heavy compared to more modern solutions. Valbruna Slater Stainless turned to Hoosier Crane Service for expert assistance. The older DC cranes were each equipped with 20 ton and 7 ton dual hoists on one trolley. Hoosier Crane’s original plan was to keep a center line bridge drive motor on both but replace the DC motors with larger AC motors. However, Hoosier Crane decided that the more viable solution was side mounted SEW Euro Drive gearboxes with motors. Hoosier Crane removed the two existing hoists and replaced them with new R&M 10 ton hoists. Hoosier Crane installed the new hoists on a new ASCE rail. These new hoists were one third of the weight of the old. Using the R&M 10t hoists, Hoosier Crane was able to deploy a more reliable, lightweight and modern system without replacing the bridges. Hoosier Crane Service, founded by Tom and Cherie Schmidt, is a family-owned business headquartered in Elkhart in Indiana. Hoosier Crane has grown throughout the last 20 years from 4 employees to approximately 100 employees and is presently providing overhead crane material handling solutions throughout the USA. Based in Fort Wayne Indiana in US, Valbruna Slater Stainless is part of the Valbruna Group. Founded in 1925, Valbruna has 2,500 employees and an annual output of approximately 250,000 tonnes of specialty steels. Production is primarily focused on stainless steels and specialty alloys, such as nickel alloys and titanium long products.
AISI Applauds WTO Ruling in Indonesian Ban on Nickel Export Strategic Research Institute Published on : 1 Dec, 2022, 6:04 am American Iron & Steel Institute President & CEO Mr Kevin Dempsey, in response to a ruling announced by the World Trade Organization regarding a dispute brought by the EU challenging Indonesia’s ban on the export of nickel ore and its requirement that all nickel ore be processed domestically, said “AISI applauds the ruling by a WTO dispute resolution panel against the government of Indonesia’s ban on the export of nickel ore. This export restriction, together with a requirement that nickel ore be processed domestically in Indonesia, has distorted global markets for nickel ore, a key input in stainless steel production, to the detriment of steel producers in the United States and around the world. We call on Indonesia to end these trade-distorting policies immediately.” He said ““AISI appreciates the active engagement by the US government as a third party in this WTO dispute to challenge the Indonesian export ban, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with USTR to address the many other trade-distorting policies by governments around the world that are fueling the ongoing global overcapacity crisis in steel.”

EUROFER Lauds WTO Ruling over Indonesian Export Ban Of Nickel Ore Strategic Research Institute Published on : 6 Dec, 2022, 5:39 am The European Steel Association EUROFER has welcomed the WTO Panel report ruling against Indonesia’s ban on the export of nickel ore. These measures have been artificially distorting the global market for nickel ore and fuelling the new export-oriented stainless steel production in Indonesia, whilst harming the EU stainless sector. EUROFER Director General Mr Axel Eggert said “The WTO dispute resolution panel confirms what EUROFER has been saying for the past four years: the Indonesian measures on nickel constitute a violation of its obligations under WTO rules. Our stainless industry has been suffering from massive Indonesian exports into the EU at very low prices, while the stainless steel products made in the EU have a carbon footprint five to six times lower. This is a nonsense that should not be tolerated by the EU any longer against the background of the EU 2030 climate targets.” The EU requested consultations at the WTO in November 2019, and the establishment of a Panel in January 2021. The WTO panel report was made public on 30 November 2022. Nickel is a key component in the production of stainless steels. Around 55% of all stainless steels contain nickel, as it improves corrosion resistance and properties. The Indonesian stainless steel industry was developed and built upon locally-available nickel ores from the outset, taking advantage of the local export ban that unduly grants an unfair competitive advantage to the Indonesian producers, whose business model is based on exports.

Indonesia Appeals over WTO Ruling in Nickel Dispute against EU Strategic Research Institute Published on : 14 Dec, 2022, 5:52 am Indonesian Government has filed appeal against a World Trade Organization’s Dispute Panel’s ruling in favor of the European Union in a dispute over Indonesia’s ban on nickel ore exports, the WTO said. The European Union had launched its challenge at the WTO in November 2019, arguing that Indonesian export restrictions on raw materials were unfairly harming its stainless steel industry. Indonesia banned nickel ore exports from the start of 2020. The WTO panel ruled in favor of the EU last month, saying that neither the prohibition of nickel exports nor a domestic processing requirement requiring all nickel ore to be refined in Indonesia were in line with global trade rules.

Indonesia Knocks WTO’s DSB for EU’s Tariffs on Stainless Steel Strategic Research Institute Published on : 1 Feb, 2023, 5:27 am Reuters reported that Indonesian Trade Ministry’s senior official Mr Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, explaining the country’s decision to complain to the World Trade Organisation, has said that the European Union’s anti-dumping tariffs on Indonesian stainless steel had cut exports severely, He told Reuters “The EU policy is not in line with WTO rules. Indonesian exports to the EU was around half a billion dollars annually and these had reduced the competitiveness of Indonesian products” He told “After the first implementation of the anti-dumping duties, Indonesia’s shipments to the EU dropped to around USD 229 million in 2021. Following the additional anti-subsidy duty, they shrank further to around USD 40 million in January-November of 2022.” The WTO had announced last week that Indonesia has requested dispute consultations with the EU regarding the anti-dumping duties. The EU last year imposed an anti-subsidy duty of 21% on imports of stainless steel cold-rolled flat products from Indonesia, which came on top of anti-dumping duties imposed in November 2021, ranging between 10.2% and 20.2%. The EU Commission said the bloc imposed the tariffs to counter unfair state-sponsored subsidies, which it said involved preferred financing from China and Indonesia’s ban of nickel ore exports. Indonesia had banned exports of unprocessed nickel ore from 2020 to attract investment into developing a downstream industry at home. The WTO last year ruled in favor of the EU in a dispute over the ban. Indonesia is appealing.
