Hyundai today announced to be the first car maker to make Android Auto available in its 2015 Sonata model. Android Auto is coming with Sonata fitted with navigation system - coming with an eight-inch touchscreen display - available on the Sonata Sport, Eco, Limited, Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T models. Owners of existing 2015 Sonata with the navigation option can get the Android Auto software update free of charge at Hyundai dealers starting today; it will be available as a download later this summer. Drivers will also need the Android 5.0 "Lollipop" operating system (or later) and the Android Auto companion app on their device.
Binnenkort een IExit......?? Nokia CEO gives insight on HERE status *****Suri admits that there “might be” synergies between Here and Networks in the long term but it was “prudent” to do a strategic review now. “On the big picture I think the synergies are limited. But that’s ok…sometimes you don’t have the synergies but you improve the portfolio, refresh the strategy and make it better,” he says. So, the “might sell, might not sell” act is an act ahead of selling Here to the highest bidder? “Let’s see,” Suri says. “It has to be a good competitive deal for Nokia and our shareholders.” Source: European Communicationstelematicsnews.info/2015/05/26/nokia-...

As an AI scientist deeply involved in the race to build autonomous people let me say this: There are not going to be truly autonomous cars for at least twenty years. In fact I sincerely doubt there will ever be such things. By the time the tech exists to make such things the human race will likely have other fish to fry. Why is this the case? Let me give a simple illustration. You are driving down a country road. Up ahead you can see a car starting to pull down a driveway. You immediately focus on that car. Threat? In a millisecond you determine that it is not, that the other driver will do the rational thing and pause waiting for you to pass. What would an autonomous vehicle using today's technology do? Come to a screeching halt. Why? Because the AI would be unable to determine the threat level of the car moving down the driveway and would be forced to do the 'safe' thing. AI's are great at dealing with motion and collision paths and such things, but today's AI's and AI's for the forseeable future cannot begin to determine the INTENT of other drivers. And without being able to determine intent, autonomous cars will be painfully slow and safety conscious -- so slow and safety conscious that no one will want to have anytthing to do with them. In order to determine intent an AI would need to understand humans and their motivations at a pretty deep level -- the thing that humans understand about each other naturally. In fact, in order to understand something as simple as the intent of a driver of another car, an AI would have to be incredibly smart and capable -- almost as smart and capable as an actual human. Not going to happen in the near future. Probably not for a considerable time. Maybe never as AI's are likely to evolve in a somewhat different direction (we have more than enough actual humans). Of course if all cars were controlled by AI's linked together it would work fine. But to make that a reality would require a draconian government that we are unlikely to elect in US and even in China I dare say it would simply piss too many folks off.

Google Driverless Test Cars to Have Steering Wheels, Brakes ******Built in Detroit by auto supplier Roush Industries, the prototypes will be equipped with removable steering wheels, brake pedals and accelerator pedals so test engineers can “take over driving if needed,” Urmson said in a blog post on Friday.www.insurancejournal.com/news/nationa...
Who doesn’t want to be first? Everybody wants to be first. We all know that whoever is second is the first loser. So it will be a surprise to no one if Google and GM get together at Google I/O tomorrow to announce the first cars with native Android software on-board coming in 2016. I sat in an Android infused Camaro over a year ago at GM Ventures. It did not change my life. But Google and GM no doubt hope to get a contact high from gripping and grinning on the stage at tomorrow’s event. Will it happen? I don’t know, but it would be in keeping with GM’s inclination – like every good car company – to be the first. GM was “first” with its Supercruise automated driving concept and first to announce an implementation of V2V technology on a MY2017 Cadillac. It’s too late to be first with CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone integration – Ferrari was first with the former and Hyundai is first with the latter. So embedded native Android software it is. If the announcement comes tomorrow it arrives ahead of the completion of Google’s own validation process for an automotive grade version of its OS. This will be essential. The reality is that Renault and SAIC Motors will have beaten GM to the dashboard with the Android operating system, but both of those versions were forked. What GM and Google are likely to announce tomorrow is a non-forked version of the OS. A funny thing happens when someone goes first. Sometimes others follow and sometimes others lean back. In the case of GM’s launch of V2V technology, only Toyota has followed suit. (Both companies are clearly hoping to mend fences with the DOT via these early V2V announcements.) Since GM went first there is little for any other OEM to gain from announcing V2V plans and any such announcement only validates the GM announcement and GM’s leadership. No car company – except Toyota with its own DOT fences to mend – has jumped aboard the bandwagon. Sometimes when someone else goes first others take a step back to see how things work out. It may take quite some time to see how GM’s Android decision will work out. One indication of GM’s thinking is its departure from the GenIVI Linux cooperative. (GM's name was notably absent from the GenIVI member list at last week's Mentor Graphics event in Dearborn. GenIVI representatives confirmed GM's departure from the organization it helped found.) In all likelihood the supplier of the Android system will be Harman International which, not coincidentally, acquired RedBend earlier this year. The key motivation for the RedBend acquisition was to obtain its firmware updating and hypervisor technologies. These are precisely the kind of resources you would want to have handy for an Android implementation. So, let’s see what happens tomorrow. But if I were a betting man, I’d bet on GM being the first to announce a full-blown Android OS implementation in the dashboard. Then, again, I am not a betting man.www.strategyanalytics.com/strategy-an...
www.wsj.com/articles/gm-to-offer-andr... May 27, 2015 3:15 p.m. ET 1 COMMENTS General Motors Co. plans to offer both Google Inc.’s Android Auto and Apple Inc.’s CarPlay software in most of its Chevrolet vehicles, signaling that no mobile operating system dominates the auto industry yet. An icon embedded in the center screen of Chevrolet vehicles will allow occupants to link cellphones via either Android Auto or CarPlay in the majority of its 2016 vehicle portfolio. The revamped Chevrolet Cruze, due out next month, will be the first to offer the feature, which will still be routed through the auto maker’s MyLink in-car infotainment system.......
