Commodities Boom or Resources Bubble? By Lindsay Williams 28 Apr 2006 at 10:07 AM EDT JOHANNESBURG (Business Day) -- Classic Business Day looks at metal and resources prices that continue to soar with Patrice Rassou, portfolio manager at Sanlam Investment Management (SIM). LINDSAY WILLIAMS: Just a couple of weeks ago the copper price on the London Metal Exchange went through $6,000 a tonne - no one could believe it then, but it went through $7,000 a tonne a couple of days ago to $7,250. There have been multi-year record highs across the board in the industrial metals, the gold price also hitting 25-year highs, and the platinum price hitting record highs. The production update from BHP Billiton [NYSE:BHP; LSE:BLT] indicates a 122% increase in the production of nickel, a 25% increase in the production of copper - where does it end? Patrice, it’s quite extraordinary what’s going on - record supplies from the major diversified resources companies, and yet record prices as well. PATRICE RASSOU: Yes, it’s quite interesting. I think we’re definitely in boom times now - with prices going really vertical as you’ve mentioned, one can’t help but sit back and say: “Where’s it all going to end?” Hopefully it’s not going to end in tears. I’m amazed - if you look at some of the price movements just this year to date, over three months copper is up almost 60%, zinc is almost 80% up, nickel is up 50%. You talk about the precious metals - maybe not to the same extent, but gold is up well over between 20% and 23%, platinum is up almost 20%, palladium up 45% - it’s pretty amazing. That’s across the board - you can look at any commodity really, any metal - and there’s been this huge up-cycle, and it’s carrying on. Now everyone’s looking at “speculative” factors that are driving that up on a day to day basis. LINDSAY WILLIAMS: There is a good set of solid fundamentals behind it - there’s really good demand from countries like India and China, and from a lot of other countries as well - but there’s also supply constraints. A quote from one of the investment banks says: “The miners have been managing the crisis, but it looks like their work has delayed the crisis, rather than averted it - mine expansions are likely to be constrained.” Can we then expect the spiky moves we’ve become used to over the last year to continue in the next six months to a year? PATRICE RASSOU: It’s very difficult to call - it’s one of those situations where it’s very difficult to disentangle what’s really fundamental, and what’s really speculative. On the one hand I think there are some real factors driving the prices we’re seeing - for example if you look at copper up almost 60% for the year - one of the stories doing the rounds now is a strike at Grupo Mexico, the third largest copper producer in the world. The market sees that strike carrying on, and that supply might not come on stream as one would expect - and on the demand side China is as strong as ever, imports into China month after month increasing, which would suggest very strong demand. To make things worse, one of the things we watch here quite carefully is what type of stocks are available for various commodities - that’s where you realise there’s a pinch point, where stock to consumption ratios are two to three weeks of various base metals around the world - which means that you can very quickly run out of one of these base metals, which means people are prepared to pay over the odds for them. LINDSAY WILLIAMS: Yes, we saw someone try to corner the silver market many years ago. If somebody really wanted to they could go to the London Metal Exchange and take the 100,000 tonnes of copper sitting in the stocks and really scare the market! Apart from that sort speculation - do you think that the commodity boom is being exacerbated by the commodity speculators? PATRICE RASSOU: I think so. There are various categories now of “speculators.” On the one side the exchange traded funds (ETFs) - in gold alone there’s probably over $8-billion invested in these ETFs - but apart from that you’re also seeing commodity index funds adding up to probably $70 billion. There are commodity unit trusts being launched around the world - that’s another $30 billion - so $100 billion has appeared in the past few years, and these funds are chasing really a very thinly traded market, and it’s obviously having the result of pushing up prices. LINDSAY WILLIAMS: Yes, indeed. We’ve got a statement coming out from Lord Browne of Maddingley - who is the BP boss - saying he blames the oil price on the action of speculators because there’s a groundswell of opinion against high oil prices at the pump level. Let’s just move on very quickly if we can to what happened at the Anglo American plc [Nasdaq:AAUK; LSE:AAL] AGM yesterday - the early resignation of Tony Trahar. Do you think he’s been under pressure because it’s one of the worst performing diversified miners? PATRICE RASSOU: Yes, I would think that Tony Trahar was a bit embattled for the past year or so - the market as isn’t patient, and wants results fairly quickly. I think the first signs of that was the announcement of the restructuring in October 2005 - I think it was really as a result of this pressure that Anglo felt that they needed to do something fairly urgent to optimise firstly the capital structure, and secondly the whole holding structure. As you will remember, it was quite an unwieldy structure - having various listed companies, plus the group - where one could either invest directly in Anglo American, or in a number of subsidiaries AngloGold Ashanti [NYSE:AU], Amplats [JSE:ANANP], Mondi, Highveld Steel [Nasdaq:HSVLY]. I think it was quite unwieldy. The way I look at it - given the pressure, given what shareholders expect - I think pressure came to bear, and Tony Trahar saw it fit to announce his retirement. LINDSAY WILLIAMS: Would you be a buyer or seller of Anglo American? PATRICE RASSOU: In terms of the whole resources base, I would be very careful at this point in time - I think investors shouldn’t be sucked into what I would call a bit of a speculative bubble - so I would say one should be quite circumspect at this point in time, and tread water.www.resourceinvestor.com/pebble.asp?r...

=> reden: negatieve correlatie commodities / us stocks.
Gr Postzak
