Russia Too Depleted for Big Offensive on War Anniversary: Ukraine Official

senior military intelligence official said Russia does not have the military resources to launch a major offensive tied to the one-year anniversary of the start of the war.

Andriy Chernyak, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, made the assertion about Russian Vladimir Putin's military suffering from a major lack of weapons in a story published Friday in the Kyiv Post.

Chernyak's position that a large offensive will not occur in the coming days runs counter to another recent public assessment from a prominent Ukrainian official. Last weekend, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said Russia will likely use the symbolism of the one-year anniversary of the invasion to begin another massive attack. Reznikov indicated the offensive would begin on or near the February 24 anniversary.

Last month, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Russia plans to mobilize more than 200,000 troops in a large offensive in the coming weeks.

Chernyak allowed that Russia was likely planning some form of assault in the coming weeks and that Putin's troops are "trying to find weaknesses" in Ukraine's defense.

"However, according to our information, Russian command does not have enough resources for large-scale offensive actions," Chernyak said, according to the Kyiv Post. "Russia is facing a lack of precision weapons, and despite that, it will continue to use missile terror against civilians in Ukraine."

He also said that Putin's military has already used more than 80 percent of its precision-guided missiles, which Russia has not been able to replace

"While information is spreading about a large-scale Russian offensive planned for February 24, Ukraine's military intelligence reported that Russia has already launched a full-scale offensive on February 24 last year, which is still ongoing," Chernyak added.

Chernyak said Russia seems to be focused on making incremental advances.

"The main goal of Russian troops remains to achieve at least some tactical success in eastern Ukraine," he said.

On Wednesday, an assessment from the Institute for the Study of War think tank in Washington, D.C., agreed, writing that "conventional Russian troops are attacking Ukrainian defensive lines and making marginal advances along the Kharkiv-Luhansk Oblast border."

Chernyak also told the Kyiv Post: "An attack on Kyiv from Belarus is also unlikely in the coming weeks," he said.

Putin's Soldiers Are Dying Faster Than Russian Analysts Can Count

Mediazona, an independent Russian media outlet that is tallying the number of killed Russian soldiers in Ukraine, recently stated that the number of reports of fatalities among President Vladimir Putin's troops has begun to increase.

"Over the past two to three weeks, we've noticed the number of reports [of killed soldiers] has begun to rise," Mediazona data journalist Maxim Litavrin told The Moscow Times.

The Russian media outlet's staff has been overwhelmed with counting Russian soldier deaths to the extent that Litavrin recently called for volunteers to join the team to work on the "casualty count project."

"Now there is a very large flow that we do not have time to parse. The topic is sensitive, and we are looking for either acquaintances or those who have already volunteered somewhere," Litavrin tweeted on February 6.

Litavrin told The Moscow Times that the increase is "linked to intensified activity on the frontlines." The journalist was asked by the outlet why the team is looking for more volunteers, to which Litavrin answered "we simply don't have enough time to process the information."

Ukrainian servicemen arrive in Belgium to master underwater drones

A group of Ukrainian military personnel arrived in Belgium on Thursday to undergo training in the operation with underwater devices.

Ludivine Dedonder, Minister of Defense of Belgium, made the announcement on Twitter.

Training of servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in this country will take place within the framework of the European Union EUMAM training mission.

“Today we welcome Ukrainian soldiers in Belgium as part of the EUMAM mission. They will undergo training on underwater systems, which Belgium transferred to Ukraine. I expressed my deep support to them and welcomed the courage they have shown for almost a year,” she said.

It should be recalled that last November, Ludivine Dedonder said that Belgium would transfer modern equipment, in particular underwater drones, to Ukraine.

“By the end of May (2023 – ed.), 10 underwater drones manufactured by the Belgian company ECA Robotics Belgium will be delivered to Ukraine,” Dedonder said.

However, the exact type of underwater vehicle was not reported.

Subsequently, the Navy Recognition website, citing its own sources, said that Belgium would transfer R7 remotely controlled underwater vehicles to Ukraine. They are compact and easy to use.

R7 Remotely Operated Vehicle designed for oceanographers, hydrographs and for work with underwater structures.

The remotely controlled vehicle is capable of operating at depths of up to 300 meters on a variety of missions, including inspection, observation, maintenance and restoration of underwater facilities.

The device can be equipped with a manipulator with five functions, becoming multifunctional. The R7 drone can easily handle or lift objects weighing up to 2 kg to the surface.

At the end of January, Belgium approved the largest military aid package for Ukraine. The Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive weapons worth 90 million euros, including air-to-air missiles AIM-120 AMRAAM, which in particular can be used as anti-aircraft missiles as part of the NASAMS system.

Zelensky: Ukraine intercepted Russian plans to destroy Moldov

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says his country has intercepted plans by Russian secret services to destroy Moldova.

Speaking to European Union leaders in Brussels, Mr Zelensky said he recently told Moldovan President Maia Sandu about the alleged scheme.

“I have informed her that we have intercepted the plan of the destruction of Moldova by the Russian intelligence,” Mr Zelensky said through a translator.

He said the documents showed “who, when and how” the plan would “break the democracy of Moldova and establish control over Moldova”.

Mr Zelensky said the plan was very similar to the one devised by Russia to take over Ukraine.
