Breaking News: EV Metals unveils Saudi battery chemicals complex location Power Materials News | Oct. 7, 2021 Australia-based battery chemicals and technology company EV Metals Group (EVM) will build a world-class battery chemicals complex in Yanbu Industrial City, on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. Managing director Michael Naylor tells Kallanish in an exclusive interview the decision on the “strategic location” follows a conditional investment agreement signed between the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY) and EVM Arabia. The roughly 127-hectare land earmarked for the complex is larger than previously planned, to accommodate a proposed capacity expansion. The site will have easy access to exports route to Europe and North America, as well as proximity to proposed battery and electric vehicles clusters in Saudi Arabia. “The Vision 2030 of the Kingdom is the perfect fit for the development of this complex,” says Naylor, pointing to the diversification of the Saudi economy and its push towards renewables, clean energy and electric vehicles. The multi-phase project will feature a plant to produce lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM); a nickel chemicals plant to produce nickel, cobalt and manganese sulphate; and a pre-cathode active materials plant. In the first stage, EVM plans to commission a two-train lithium plant with capacity to produce 50,000 tonnes/year of LHM in late 2024 and ramp-up in early 2025. The second train will be commissioned six months after the first. The project also includes a three-train nickel plant with capacity to produce 300,000 t/y of high-purity nickel sulphate, set to be operational in 2026. A pre-cathode active materials plant should follow. Initial investment for the two-train lithium plant is set at $800 million, with the amount rising to up to $3 billion by 2030. Amec Foster Wheeler Australia is conducting the front-end engineering design (FEED) study for the first two trains of LHM. Study completion is scheduled for Q4 2022, enabling construction to start in Q1 2023. Thanks to the support of Saudi agencies, EVM is now working to double its planned LHM production capacity to 100,000 t/y, says Naylor. First mover advantage Initially, EVM will process spodumene concentrate containing 6% lithium oxide (SC6) from Western Australia. Phase I is expected to require 330,000 t/y of SC6, for which offtake negotiations have started. It will also rely on its nickel resources in Western Australia, but it is simultaneously pushing for first mover advantage in the mining of its own feedstock in Saudi Arabia, including rare earth elements. The company has applied for exploration licenses over areas with identified critical raw materials including lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, platinum group metals and rare earths in Saudi Arabia. The latter, particularly, is a strategic development area for Saudi to open up the global supply chain, currently dominated by China, to key markets of Europe and North America. “It’s strategic now for Western economies to develop independent supply chains because here’s where the Chinese are headed according to our market intelligence: Would you like to buy rare earths? Yes. What do you want them for? Permanent magnets for motors for electric vehicles. And they will say: here’s the car,” says Naylor, suggesting Chinese suppliers are in control of what to offer and to whom. “It’s a new industry for the Kingdom and very much fits the diversification strategy,” he adds. “The Kingdom hasn’t looked at this before and when it did, it was 20 or 30 years ago … the world has changed. So, from our perspective in Western Australia they’re [Saudis] about 30-50 years behind us in these areas. And that’s what’s been very clever with the strategy that our chairman Abdullah S. Busfar has put in place … and now has this company in a position to bring to the Kingdom world-class digital capabilities to develop these critical raw materials.”youtu.be/TyD6TjTH8FE bron : Kallanish
Ecograf Green Revolution drives graphite demand to unprecedented heights Editor11. October 2021 Source: Depositphotos Thank you for rating this post. The transition to electromobility, preferably fueled by renewable energies, leads to a drastic increase in graphite demand, a new report shows. Because even if the name may not suggest it, graphite is the largest component of any lithium-ion battery. Last year, the World Bank already wrote that graphite demand is increasing both absolutely and in percentage terms, as the material is used in the most common batteries for electric cars, mains storage and decentralized batteries. And according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence experts, a battery megafactory that is able to supply 30 gigawatt hours per year needs around 33,000 tons of graphite as an anode material annually. If you now extrapolate this to the more than 200 megafactories whose construction has been announced or has already begun, this corresponds to up to 5.4 million Tons of battery graphite per year. For example, the International Energy Agency also predicts that electromobility and sectors with low carbon emissions will be approx. 25 times more graphite will need than today. And this does not even take into account traditional uses such as steel production. According to the Mineral Commodity Summaries 2021, an annual report by the United States Geological Survey, there are currently no graphite mines in the USA, so US producers have to rely on imports of 41,000 tons. Last year, China delivered around 59% of mine production in graphite, by far followed by Mozambique (11%), Brazil (9%) and Madagascar (4%). 2% of global graphite production came from North America (Canada and Mexico). But when it comes to battery graphite as anode material used in the lithium-ion batteries of electric vehicles, then China was the only commercial producer in 2020! The interest in breaking China's supremacy is correspondingly high in view of the expected and already started boom in electric mobility. Numerous companies worldwide are working on this, some of which are strongly supported directly and/or indirectly by the state. These include the Australian EcoGraf (WKN A2PW0M) , which not only wants to build a battery graphite production plant in Western Australia - and already has the necessary capital for it - but has also developed a process also called EcoGraf, which also does not use the extremely harmful hydrogen fluoric acid used in China. Extensive information about EcoGraf can be found in the company profile on goldinvest.de.
SleeperEcoGraf graphite anode material outperforms industry benchmarks 19 October 2021Battery anode material produced by EcoGraf (ASX: EGR) has outperformed international benchmarks during recent product qualification work, according to the company. The sustainably-produced HFfree battery anode material was tested as part of an extensive trial for a major battery anode material producer, which placed the effectiveness of the product up against reference material from existing manufacturers. This is considered to be a critical milestone for EcoGraf, which is in the process of finalising construction plans for its new state-of-the-art battery anode material facility in Kwinana Western Australia, fed by its Epanko Graphite Project in Tanzania. EcoGraf’s HFfree anode material outperforms competitors Preparation of the product sample involved completion of a large mechanical shaping program, using commercial-scale equipment in conjunction with a leading international equipment manufacturer. This was followed by HFfree purification through a pilot plant EcoGraf has established with one of Australia’s foremost mineral testing organisations. The company reports that its product sample outperformed against reference materials in half-cell electrochemical testing, and also satisfied the anode producer’s physical and chemical specifications. EcoGraf said that the results provide further confirmation of the effectiveness of its environmentally-superior EcoGraf processing technology to provide anode, battery and electric vehicle manufactures with high quality, sustainably-produced battery anode material. Vertical integration with local downstream processing The company’s new downstream production facility is anticipated to be the first of its type internationally, and will export spherical graphite products to rapidly-growing battery markets in Asia, Europe, and North America using a superior, environmentally-responsible HFfree purification technology. Samsung SDI's net profit soars due to EV battery sales 1054 Views South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI announces that, due to strong sales of its EV batteries, the company's Q3 net profit this year reached KRW 420.4 billion ($357.6 million), an increase of 74.7% year-on-year, Kallanish reports. Samsung SDI’s Q3 revenue is KRW 3.43 trillion, an increase of 11.4% over the same period last year; operating profit is KRW 373.5 billion, an increase of 39.7% over the same period last year. Both reached record highs. Samsung SDI said that the EV battery business has performed well since it first made a profit in the second quarter. The increase in sales of high-value-added products has offset the impact from the shortage of automotive chips. Due to increasing demand for EVs, smart phones and wearable devices, sales of small batteries have increased, and so has the related profitability improved. The operating profit of Samsung's SDI battery business is KRW 20.8 billion, an increase of 46% year-on-year; revenue is KRW 2.74 trillion, an increase of 15% y-o-y. With an optimistic attitude towards market changes, the company is also adjusting its products while trying to maintaining profits. Samsung began mass production of Gen.5 batteries in the third quarter. As the company will increase the supply of Gen.5 batteries in Q4, car battery sales are expected to rise. Supported by strong demand in the global electric vehicle and smartphone markets, sales of small cylindrical batteries and soft pack batteries are also expected to increase. By Kallanish Team
Wärtsilä Energy Storage System for Renewable Energy in UK Strategic Research Institute Published on : 10 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am Wärtsilä has supplied an energy storage system at the Kemsley substation in South England which is directly connected to National Grid’s high-voltage transmission network. The system is the second to go live as part of Pivot Power’s nationwide rollout of Energy Superhubs, following the first activation in June in Cowley. In total, Pivot Power plans to deploy up to 40 similar sites throughout the UK, which will provide up to 2 GW of flexible capacity. The UK aims to align its energy sector with its net-zero target, and energy storage capacity will need to dramatically grow to 18 GW by 2035 to support this transition, according to recent power system modelling from Wärtsilä[1]. Energy storage is crucial to provide the flexibility needed to enhance the reliability of the country’s electricity system and cost-effectively integrate more renewable generation. Pivot Power’s Energy Superhub network could provide almost 10% of the energy storage predicted the UK will need by 2035 and it will help to create a smarter, more flexible grid. Wärtsilä has supplied its advanced energy storage technology for the Kemsley project coupled with its GEMS Digital Energy Platform, which leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning for a broad range of applications, providing critical feedback to stakeholders. GEMS software supports value streams via the dynamic containment market, a key frequency response service recently enabled by the National Grid. Wärtsilä and Pivot Power have recently announced a deal for 100 MW / 200 MWh of energy storage in the West Midlands, split across one site in Coventry and the other in Sandwell, near Birmingham. Installing and effectively operating energy storage systems at scale will enable the UK grid to maximise its potential for wind and solar energy, and to reach its target of a net-zero power sector by 2035.
Zo’n betontoren is heel misschien handig in droge gebieden.
