    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Daimler wil meer snijden in het personeelsbestand en in plaats van 10.000 nu 15.000 medewerkers laten vertrekken, om de toekomst van de Mercedes-fabrikant veilig te stellen. Dat schrijft het Duitse Handelsblatt maandag.

    Na drie winstwaarschuwingen is het vertrouwen van beleggers in Daimler CEO Ola Källenius gedaald, en de Zweed zou daarom hebben besloten bij de presentatie van de jaarcijfers dinsdag een ambitieus toekomstplan te presenteren, met een mix van investeringen in duurzame luxe-auto's en harde bezuinigingen. De Duitse Duitse krant baseert zich op anonieme bronnen rond de autofabrikant.

    De banenreductie zal deels door vervroegde pensionering en deeltijdwerk voor oudere medewerkers moeten worden gerealiseerd.

    Zo zou er aanzienlijk meer dan 1,4 miljard euro kunnen worden gespaard. Dat bedrag zong eerder al rond, hoewel Daimler zich er niet over uitliet.

    Daimler wil ook af van zijn verlieslatende innovatielab, en zou een meerderheidseigenaar zoeken. Het aantal modellen moet worden uitgedund. Zo komt er geen opvolger voor de S-klasse Cabrio of de S-klasse Coupé.

    (ABM FN)Daimler heeft in 2019 de winst sterk zien teruglopen, ondanks dat de omzet steeg en er meer auto's werden verkocht. Dit bleek dinsdagochtend uit de cijfers van de fabrikant van onder meer Mercedes.

    De nettowinst liep terug van 7,6 miljard euro in 2018 tot 2,7 miljard euro afgelopen jaar. De winsten voor rente en belastingen daalde van 11,1 miljard naar 4,3 miljard euro over dezelfde periode. De omzet steeg evenwel met drie procent tot 172,7 miljard euro terwijl het aantal verkochte auto’s ongeveer stabiel bleef op 3,34 miljoen tegenover 3,35 miljoen een jaar eerder.

    "Terwijl onze resultaten wijzen op een sterke vraag van onze klanten, kunnen we niet tevreden zijn met onze winstcijfers", aldus voorzitter Ola Källenius van Daimler.

    De autofabrikant wil een dividend uitkeren van 0,90 euro per aandeel en dat is minder dan de 3,25 euro per aandeel over 2018.

    De autobouwer verwacht voor 2019 een lichte daling van de verkoop van auto’s terwijl de omzet stabiel zou moeten blijven. De EBIT zou dan weer significant hoger moeten zijn dan in 2019. Dit door efficiëntiewinsten en besparingen op materiaal en personeel aldus Daimler.

    ”De focus zal de komende jaren liggen op een significante verbetering van onze marges en de cashflow” aldus Harald Wilhelm, lid van het raad van bestuur en verantwoordelijk voor de Finance & Controlling afdeling van Daimler Mobility.

    Het aandeel Daimler steeg dinsdag 0,3 procent.

    Daimler Inks Deal for 100% Green Power in Germany

    Multi-national auto giant Daimler has revealed plans to source 100 per cent of its electricity demand in its home country of Germany from “firmed” and “flexible” renewables, in deal put together by Norwegian power company Statkraft. The contract includes wind farms that are already in operation, as well as some that will be built new and used exclusively to power Daimler. Any gaps in demand will be filled by Statkraft’s own hydropower plants.

    New deal, which builds on a December 2018 energy supply deal between the companies, would also support existing wind power projects in Germany which, from January 01, 2021, will lose their government subsidy for electricity generation.

    Statkraft said the contract, which will be managed by an offshoot of Luxembourg energy company Encevo Group, called Enovos, marked the first instance of a long-term 100% green power supply deal on an industrial scale in Germany.

    'Daimler heeft geen staatssteun nodig'

    STUTTGART (AFN/RTR) - De Duitse automaker Daimler heeft ondanks de huidige coronacrisis geen staatssteun nodig, ondanks dat de productie bij sommige fabrieken stilligt. Dat zei topman Ola Källenius tegen de Duitse zakenkrant Handelsblatt. Volgens de Zweed kan het moederconcern van Mercedes-Benz onder meer vertrouwen op zijn sterke orderboek van voor de crisis.

    Daimler zag zich onlangs genoodzaakt een fabriek in de Verenigde Staten stil te leggen. Daartegenover staan alweer de heropening van fabrieken in China. De vraag naar auto's in die belangrijke markt is volgens de Daimler-baas weer aan het aantrekken.

    Källenius zegt ook voortdurend overleg te voeren met zijn leveranciers. Tot nu toe was er volgens hem geen geval bekend waarin liquiditeit een probleem was.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Daimler is in gesprek met meerdere banken over een nieuwe kredietfaciliteit van zeker 10 miljard euro waarmee het de gevolgen van de coronacrisis het hoofd kan bieden. Dit meldde persbureau Bloomberg donderdag op basis van ingewijden.

    De maker van Mercedes-Benz auto's denkt een kredietfaciliteit van 10 miljard tot 15 miljard euro nodig te hebben om de financiële slagkracht te versterken, volgens de bronnen.

    Er wordt volop gesproken met banken en het is niet duidelijk hoe een dergelijke deal eruit komt te zijn of wanneer deze wordt aangekondigd. Volgens Bloomberg op zijn vroegst volgende week.

    Daimler wilde niet reageren op de berichtgeving, aldus het persbureau.

    Daimler to Restart German Plants from April 20

    Daimler last week announced plans to restart work at factories in Germany from April 20, after a weeks-long interruption due to the coronavirus pandemic. It said "In a few selected factories, we are implementing a coordinated restart of production. From April 20 this will affect the car motor factories in Germany, Mercedes-Benz car factories in Sindelfingen and Bremen and the vans factories. Truck and bus sites will also open from the same date.”

    Daimler also said that it would extend shorter hours for its German workers until April 30, impacting the majority of production as well as administration.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Daimler heeft de omzet en winstgevendheid in het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar stevig onder druk zien staan. Dit bleek woensdag uit het kwartaalbericht van de Duitse autofabrikant.

    De nettowinst liep terug van 2.149 miljoen euro over het eerste kwartaal van 2019 naar 168 euro over het afgelopen kwartaal. De winst voor rente en belastingen (EBIT) daalde van 2.798 miljoen euro naar 617 miljoen euro.

    De omzet van Daimler nam af van 39,7 miljard naar 37,2 miljard euro, terwijl het aantal verkochte auto’s daalde van 773.800 naar 644.300.

    De kasstroom dook verder in de min. Vorig jaar was er nog sprake van een negatieve vrije kasstroom van 2 miljard euro, dit jaar stond er 2,3 miljard euro negatief in de boeken.

    Deze afnames kwamen niet als een verrassing. De fabrikant van onder meer Mercedes trok vorige week donderdag al de belofte voor een winstherstel in 2020 in.

    Het aandeel Daimler sloot dinsdag 3,7 procent hoger.

    Daimler: partners Rolls-Royce in power generator deal

    (CercleFinance.com) - Daimler Truck says that it plans to collaborate with Rolls-Royce on stationary fuel cell systems as CO2-neutral emergency power generators for critical sites such as data centres.

    A full cooperation agreement is being prepared for signature later this year. As part of this partnership, a joint venture between Daimler Truck and Volvo Group will be responsible for supplying the fuel cells.

    Through its innovation unit Lab 1886, Daimler and Rolls-Royce Power Systems have already agreed on a pilot scheme to develop a demonstrator of this technology, which is expected to become operational towards the end of this year.

    Mercedes-Benz Cars to use CO2 Free Rail Transport in Germany & Austria

    In implementing its sustainable business strategy, Mercedes-Benz Cars is taking the next step towards CO2 neutral mobility: since the beginning of the year, all of Mercedes-Benz’s rail transport logistics with Deutsche Bahn have been converted to CO2 free energy sources. This means that all production materials for Mercedes-Benz passenger car plants in Germany, as well as for the Kecskemét, Hungary plant, are now transported by rail using green energy.

    Mercedes-Benz Cars is working continuously to optimise its global logistics network. The company has been continuously expanding its use of the rail network in particular, and has been focusing on sustainable and digital innovations. Together with its logistics partner Deutsche Bahn, Mercedes-Benz Cars has now reached a new milestone in its inbound logistics: its rail transport of vehicle components is from now on CO2 free. This applies for the Mercedes-Benz plants in Bremen, Rastatt, Sindelfingen, Hamburg, Kuppenheim, Untertürkheim and MDC Power GmbH in Kölleda, Germany, as well as for the plant in Kecskemét, Hungary. The rail transport translates to approximately 270 truck-loads a day that no longer require ground shipping.

    The green energy which the company uses for its rail transport in Germany and Austria comes solely from domestic renewable energy sources. A majority of the green energy is currently produced at hydro-electric power stations.

    Mercedes-Benz Car Plants Worldwide Restarting Production

    After a production suspension period caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mercedes-Benz car plants have successfully restarted production. From June onwards, all Mercedes-Benz AG plants worldwide will be restarted. On April 20th, the engine and component plants in Germany gradually resumed production first, followed by the Mercedes-Benz car assembly plants. The international Mercedes-Benz production sites have also incrementally resumed production in parallel. The health and safety of everyone involved is of the highest priority for Mercedes-Benz. The production ramp-up is designed to be flexible in order to be able to react to current developments and country-specific regulations. In resuming production in a coordinated manner, Mercedes-Benz is continuing its product and electric offensive and thereby also serving its largest sales market in China, where the company is seeing a significant increase in demand again.

    Mercedes-Benz powertrain plants in Germany
    The Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim plant restarted production on April 20 after a suspension period. The Stuttgart plant produces engines and components that are required for production at Mercedes-Benz assembly plants worldwide – the same applies to the Kölleda and Arnstadt plants (MDC Power and MDC Technology). Similarly, the Mercedes-Benz Berlin plant has resumed its production, e.g. of Camtronic engine management units. The same applies to the Mercedes-Benz Hamburg plant that produces axles and axle components for Mercedes-Benz vehicle production around the world. As part of Mercedes-Benz’s electric offensive, the Kamenz battery plants of Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Accumotive — which produce batteries for the EQ family, as well as drive batteries for plug-in hybrid vehicles and 48V batteries – continued their operations during the production suspension, working on strategic ramp-up projects on a 2-shift basis with strictly staggered shifts and extensive safety measures for the employees.

    Mercedes-Benz car assembly plants Germany
    The gradual restart of the Mercedes-Benz car assembly plants began on April 27. At the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant, production capacities are gradually being increased for the entire product range, which includes the bestselling SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GLC. At the same time, production of the EQC (combined electrical consumption: 20.8–19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)[1] is being gradually ramped up on the same line as part of the electric offensive. The Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant production includes the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the S-Class Saloon, the world’s bestselling luxury saloon in 2019, for which China was the largest market last year. The E-Class and S-Class electrified models, hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, are also produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen. This year Mercedes-Benz will start producing the new S-Class in the new “Factory 56” in Sindelfingen, which will open in September 2020. The Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant is the lead plant for the worldwide production of the high-volume Mercedes-Benz compact cars: in 2019, one in four Mercedes-Benz vehicles sold worldwide was a compact car. The A-Class Sedan, A-Class and B-Class as well as the compact SUV GLA are manufactured in Rastatt. Since this year, the plug-in hybrid variants of the A- and B-Class are also being produced here.

    Mercedes-Benz global production network
    Mercedes-Benz Cars Operations (MO) is responsible for passenger car production at over 30 locations around the world as part of a flexible and efficient production network. After a country-specific period of work suspension, all Mercedes-Benz AG car plants worldwide will be restarting from June. Production in China has been gradually resumed since February 10, 2020. In parallel to the restart of the German Mercedes-Benz production locations, all other international locations have resumed operations since the middle of April. These include the plants in Sebes / Cugir (Romania) that manufacture transmissions for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the Mercedes-Benz passenger car assembly plants in Kecskemét (Hungary), an important part of the global compact car production network, in Tuscaloosa (USA), the longstanding location for SUV production, and in East London (South Africa), a part of the global production network for the C-Class, which have all restarted production. The Hambach (France) plant, which produces the electric smart EQ models, has also been gradually ramping up operations since June 2nd.

    Mercedes-AMG Increasing Efficiency with Electric Exhaust Gas Turbocharger

    Mercedes-AMG is pressing ahead with electrification through innovative developments and as part of this is also benefiting from motorsport know-how. The latest achievement which is already in the final stages of development is the electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which in future will be used for the first time in a series production model from Affalterbach. Developed in partnership with Garrett Motion, this technology comes straight from Formula 1 and resolves the conflicting goals between a small, fast-reacting turbocharger which achieves relatively low peak performance and a large turbocharger with a high peak performance but which on the other hand can suffer from turbo lag.

    The highlight of this innovative turbocharging system is a slim electric motor, measuring about 4 centimetres, which is integrated directly on the charger shaft between the turbine wheel on the exhaust side and the compressor wheel on the fresh air side. This electronically controlled electric motor drives the compressor wheel before this accepts the exhaust gas flow. The electrification of the turbocharger significantly improves immediate response from idle speed and across the entire engine speed range. The so-called turbo lag – the delayed response of a conventional turbocharger – is eliminated by the electric motor. The result is that the combustion engine responds even more spontaneously to accelerator pedal input, and the entire driving feel is significantly more dynamic and agile. In addition, electrification of the turbocharger enables higher torque at low engine speeds, which also enhances agility and optimises acceleration capability from a standstill. Even when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator or applies the brakes, the technology of the electric turbocharger is able to maintain the boost pressure at all times, so that a continuous direct response is guaranteed.

    The turbocharger achieves speeds of up to 170,000 rpm, which enables a very high rate of air flow. It can be operated via a 48-volt on-board electrical system. The turbocharger, electric motor and power electronics are connected to the combustion engine's cooling circuit to create an optimum temperature environment at all times.

    Mercedes-Benz starts production of masks at Sindelfingen plant

    Mercedes-Benz has started operation of a production plant for face masks at its Sindelfingen plant. In future the company will thus increasingly be focusing on its own production of equipment to protect against the spread of COVID-19. The fully automatic production line has a daily capacity of more than 100,000 masks. The aim is for them to be used in the European Mercedes-Benz passenger car plants which have successively taken up production again following a phase of work interruption as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mercedes-Benz will not only make the masks produced in Sindelfingen available to its own employees; it also wants to support external institutions as part of its social responsibility.

    In order to stem the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic Mercedes-Benz is focusing on mouth and nose masks produced in-house and in June it put into operation a fully automatic production line at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant. This sees the company securing the requirements of the passenger car and components plants which have already been starting up again since mid-April. Within a few weeks Mercedes-Benz has completed the entire process chain for in-house production – from planning and material procurement to commissioning of the production plant and distribution of the mouth and nose protection.

    Both the facility and the required raw materials come from Germany. The production facility for the mouth and nose masks at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen by PIA Automation Holding GmbH puts together the fleece, nose clips and ear bands in a fully automatic production process in a few seconds, which makes it possible to achieve a daily output quantity of more than 100,000 masks.

    By the end of the year the company is expecting a production volume of more than seven million masks. Alongside provision for the employees, Mercedes-Benz also wants to meet its social responsibility and support external institutions, assuming country-specific approvals and requirements. The mouth and nose masks currently conform to DIN EN 14683 and serve to counteract the spread of pathogens from the nose and throat of the wearer.

    Daimler Truck Aiming for Series Production of Fuel Cells

    Daimler Truck AG is consistently driving forward series production of fuel cells with Daimler Truck Fuel Cell GmbH & Co KG. In the past ten years, experts from Daimler have already built up extensive know-how in this field and have developed production methods and processes. In close cooperation with their colleagues in Vancouver in Canada and with the ongoing fuel cell development activities, the Stuttgart-based experts are now transferring that experience to the direct preliminary stage of future series production. Investments are being made in new state-of-the-art facilities covering every single process stage of fuel cell production: from membrane coating and stack manufacturing to the production of fuel cell units.

    Conventional industrial production processes cannot be directly transferred to the highly complex and highly sensitive fuel cell stacks. For example, the processing of numerous delicate components takes place in the micrometer range. Even the smallest contamination could impair the functionality of the fuel cells, which is why a clean room with filtered air is being set up for some of the work in the planned pre-series production. Optimizing the ambient air in production is also especially important, since even slight fluctuations in temperature and humidity can lead to significant material changes. This would make further work in subsequent processes considerably more difficult. However, the greatest challenge for the Daimler experts is to achieve short production cycles, which is essential for cost-effective production. For this reason, the experts in the production of fuel cell stacks sometimes rely for example on technologies from the packaging industry, which are generally not used in conventional engine production.

    In April this year, Daimler Truck AG concluded a preliminary, non-binding agreement with the Volvo Group to establish a new joint venture for the development and marketing of fuel cell systems to be used in heavy-duty commercial vehicles and other applications. The joint venture will draw upon expertise from both Daimler Truck AG and the Volvo Group. The production of fuel cell systems is also to be included in the joint venture. Daimler Truck AG and the Volvo Group plan to offer heavy-duty fuel cell commercial vehicles for demanding and heavy-duty long-distance haulage from series production in the second half of this decade.

    In order to facilitate the joint venture with the Volvo Group, Daimler Truck AG is bringing together all Group-wide fuel cell activities in the recently established subsidiary Daimler Truck Fuel Cell GmbH & Co KG. This also includes the activities of Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH. Daimler Truck Fuel Cell GmbH & Co KG is to transition into the planned joint venture at a later date. Over the past decades, Daimler has acquired considerable expertise in the field of fuel cells at its site in Nabern, Germany, (currently the headquarters of Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH) and at other production and development facilities in Germany and Canada.

    Topman Daimler: beloning topmanagers moet fors omlaag

    STUTTGART (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - De beloningen van topmanagers bij het Duitse autoconcern Daimler en andere autobedrijven zullen "drastisch" moeten worden verlaagd als zij de coronacrisis willen overleven. Dat zei topman Ola Källenius van het moederbedrijf van Mercedes-Benz. Ook dreigen volgens hem nog meer banen verloren te gaan in de autosector vanwege de impact van de virusuitbraak op de autoverkopen.

    Ook de salarissen van gewone werknemers bij Daimler zoals bij assemblage zullen omlaag moeten, al is de geste minder sterk dan bij topmanagers, aldus Källenius in een videoconferentie van de grote Duitse vakbond IG Metall. Hij spreekt van "pijnlijke ingrepen" die nodig zijn om de "grimmige realiteit" voor Daimler en de gehele autosector door de crisis financieel het hoofd te kunnen bieden en in de toekomst investeringen in nieuwe technologie te kunnen doen.

    Daimler was voor de virusuitbraak al bezig duizenden banen te schrappen, maar volgens de topman zullen verdere ingrepen waarschijnlijk nodig zijn. Vakblad Automobilwoche meldde vorige week dat er mogelijk de komende jaren nog eens 10.000 arbeidsplaatsen verloren kunnen gaan bij het bedrijf uit Stuttgart. Daimler noemde die berichtgeving "speculaties". Aan het einde van 2019 had Daimler wereldwijd bijna 300.000 mensen in dienst.

    Volgende week vindt de jaarlijkse aandeelhoudersvergadering van Daimler plaats. Het wordt de eerste algemene vergadering onder leiding van de Zweedse Källenius sinds hij in mei vorig jaar het roer overnam van Dieter Zetsche. Op de beurs is het aandeel Daimler dit jaar flink in waarde gedaald door de malaise in de auto-industrie vanwege corona.

    Mercedes-Benz werkt samen met Chinese fabrikant batterijcellen

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Mercedes-Benz is een strategische samenwerking aangegaan met de Chinese fabrikant van batterijcellen, Farasis Energy. Dit maakte eigenaar Daimler vrijdag bekend zonder financiële details.

    De samenwerking is volgens Daimler een belangrijke stap op de weg naar CO2-neutraal rijden. Farasis is bezig om een fabriek voor batterijcellen te bouwen in het Duitse Bitterfeld-Wolfen. Dit zal 2.000 banen opleveren.

    Mercedes-Benz neemt ook een belang in Farasis, dat momenteel aan een beursgang werkt, van circa 3 procent.

    (ABM FN-Dow Jones) Daimler vreest in het tweede kwartaal verlies te hebben geleden. Dit blijkt uit een persbericht van de Duitse autobouwer op woensdag.

    "In het licht van de wereldwijde effecten van de coronapandemie verwacht Daimler een negatieve aangepaste EBIT", zo schreef de fabrikant. Ook waarschuwde Daimler voor een negatieve vrije kasstroom in het industriële segment.

    Daarnaast voorziet Daimler, zoals eerder aangegeven, dat de omzet "significant" zal dalen, "ondanks dat de omzetontwikkeling in de afgelopen weken, vooral bij de personenauto's, aanleiding zijn voor voorzichtig optimisme".

    De vroegtijdige ingrepen in de productie en de maatregelen om de kosten in de hand te houden hadden volgens Daimler een positief effect op de kasstroom en de liquiditeit. Eind april liet de fabrikant de winstverwachting voor 2020 al varen.

    Op de aanstaande jaarvergadering stelt Daimler zijn aandeelhouders een dividend van 0,90 euro per aandeel over 2019 voor. Dat is flink minder dan de 3,25 euro per aandeel een jaar eerder.

    STUTTGART (AFN) - Het Duitse autoconcern Daimler gaat nog verder in de kosten snijden vanwege de coronacrisis. Dat verklaarde topman Ola Källenius van het moederbedrijf van Mercedes-Benz en Smart op de jaarlijkse aandeelhoudersvergadering die virtueel wordt gehouden. Het is de eerste algemene vergadering onder leiding van de Zweedse Källenius sinds hij in mei vorig jaar het roer overnam van Dieter Zetsche.

    Källenius kwam niet met concrete details, maar zei wel dat er constructief overleg wordt gevoerd met vertegenwoordigers van werknemers. Daimler was voor de virusuitbraak al bezig duizenden banen te schrappen, maar er wordt gevreesd dat nog duizenden banen extra kunnen komen te vervallen bij het bedrijf uit Stuttgart. Vorige week verklaarde Källenius al dat bij Daimler ook flink zou worden gaan gesneden in de beloningen van topmanagers.

    Verder zei de Daimler-topman dat er gesprekken worden gevoerd over de verkoop van de Smart-fabriek in het Franse Hambach. Die fabriek kan mogelijk worden verkocht aan het Britse autobedrijf Ineos Automotive, dat daar zijn nieuwe Grenadier-terreinwagen zou willen gaan bouwen.

    Verkoop gedaald

    Het bedrijf maakte verder bekend dat in de eerste helft van dit jaar de verkoop van het merk Mercedes-Benz met 19 procent was gedaald naar circa 870.000 auto's vergeleken met een jaar eerder. Daimler zag al wel verbetering in juni.

    Verder kelderde de truckverkoop van Daimler in de eerste helft met 38 procent tot 150.000 vrachtwagens. In de afgelopen weken zag Daimler ook tekenen van verbetering bij de truckbestellingen.
