ABB Technology Helps Virtual Power Plant in China

ABB technology for customized intelligent distribution, metering and coordination control has helped the Chinese utility State Grid Jibei Electric Power Co Ltd to build a virtual power plant. The virtual power plant is not a conventional physical power plant. It is a network of clean energy generation systems and energy storage devices - a seamless virtual platform that controls power generation via a distributed power-management system. Although power from the interconnected units is dispatched through the central control room of the VPP, they remain independent in their operation and ownership. The VPP not only enables the coordinated control of its distributed energy sources, it also manages flexible power consumers and storage devices, forecasting, optimizing and dispatching, as though it were a single physical plant.

Since the new VPP was put into operation in December 2019, 11 types of flexible energy resources have been connected and, thanks to its Internet of Things in Power Systems based operation, energy data is received in real time. Around 26.5 MW capacity was connected in stage one of the project and a further 226 MW capacity is expected to be incorporated in stage two. Upon completion of this second stage, the VPP will meet the needs of 12.4 million people living in the three cities of Zhangjiakou, Qinhuangdao and Langfang.

Stabilizing the supply of power from inherently variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, and balancing it with a wide range of demand, presents the daunting challenge. ABB’s experience and leading-edge technologies for VPPs enabled it to provide customized intelligent distribution metering and coordination control technologies for multiple power sources and consumers in different industries. These include solar power systems, air-source heat pumps, civil and industrial air-conditioning units, and EV charging stations.

ABB has deployed a range of intelligent instruments and digital equipment, such as the IM300 multifunction meters and EKIP UP devices - digital switchgear units for monitoring, protection and control. These are used to monitor various electrical and environmental parameters, such as temperatures across the power distribution system. This information is used to ensure efficient power management strategies, including peak shaving and load transfer.

At the same time, co-ordination control technologies have been deployed in the offices of Jibei Electric, to automatically govern the operation of interconnected air-conditioning units and rapidly reduce electrical load without compromising user comfort.

ABB Emissions Monitoring Technology to Generate WTE in Western Australia

Cleantech company Hitachi Zosen Inova Australia has selected three ABB ACF5000 analyzers as part of a complete continuous emission monitoring solution to accurately monitor the composition of exhaust gases at its new large-scale East Rockingham Waste-to-Energy facility, located 45 km south of Perth in Western Australia. High-tech facilities like this waste to energy plant address two major challenges facing Australia because they deliver sustainable and affordable solutions for both electricity generation and waste management, according to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency which provided support for the project via grant funding. The plant will generate 29 MW of electricity for the local state-owned electricity grid, more than 50 per cent of it deemed to be renewable. This is enough capacity to power 40,000 homes from an annual feedstock of up to 330,000 tonnes of municipal, industrial and commercial waste. The byproducts from the incineration process will be used to build roads and produce construction materials, ensuring that 70,000 tonnes of bottom ash will not go to landfill.

The success of the AUD 511 million project is vital to improve waste diversion rates. Perth is built on a sandy coastal plain and heavily reliant on groundwater as its primary source of potable water, so when existing landfill sites reach capacity, new metropolitan area landfill sites are unlikely to be approved.

ABB's multi-component gas analyzers will help the plant operator control the cost of compliance, remove complexity, and maximize profit while operating in a sustainable way. Digital service technology will be a key feature of the project, particularly ABB Ability Condition Monitoring for measurement devices which will enable ABB to provide remote support during commissioning, start-up ana throughout the analyzers' lifecycle. This means ABB will contribute expert engineering input without visiting the site, enabling condition-based maintenance instead of schedule-basea maintenance, with interaction secured by ABB's world-leading cybersecurity technologies.

In addition to developing and constructing the state-of-the-art facility in the Rockingham Industrial Zone, which will be the second largest of its kind to be built in Australia, HZI will also part-own and co-operate it. Waste-to-energy projects attract the highest level of assessment by environmental regulators and having the combination of ABB's world-class gas analyzers and expert services will help ensure maximum up-time, regulatory compliance and continued profitable operations. ABB CEMS consistently achieve in excess of 98% up-time, which means less maintenance effort, lower total cost of ownership and elimination of the stress and workload caused by non-compliance.

Once operational in December 2022, this new plant and its process will achieve 96 per cent diversion from landfill. This will make a significant environmental impact given that more than 23 million tons of waste goes into Australian landfill every year, with Western Australia having the highest waste generation rate per capita, coupled with the lowest recovery rate, of any state in Australia.

The project had financial close on 23 Dec 2019 and is owned by a consortium consisting of John Laing (40%), Masdar/Tribe (40%), Acciona Construction (10%), and Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI), (10%). The project shareholders awarded the contract to design, bund and commission the plant to an EPC consortium formed by Acciona Industrial and HZI.

“We have benefitted from ABB's expertise in hoists and brake systems previously, and know that ABB also has a strong track record in building unified IT frameworks,” said Chongyun Zhang of Shaanxi Chenghe Shanyang Coal Mine Co., Ltd. “ABB's local technical competence and the adaptation and scalability of ABB Ability™ Asset Vista were additional key factors in awarding this contract.”

“This contract marks Asset Vista’s first application in China,” said Xin Wang, Service Manager of ABB Process Industries, North Asia and China. “With technical support from ABB Brazil’s Asset Vista team, including training and project experience sharing, the team in China completed the project successfully, with commissioning in June 2020. The success of this project will play a key role in expanding our digital capabilities among other mining customers and industrial sectors in China with enquiries from new customers already underway.”

“Customer understanding of condition monitoring is increasing and this is creating a larger geographical footprint across industries,” said Eduardo Ingegneri, Global Product Manager, for ABB Ability™ Asset Vista. “The technology is not only scalable, but can be adapted to a range of scenarios to ensure the highest levels of asset health and to enable more predictable operations.”
