Siemens HVDC Power Bridge will connect Crete with Mainland Greece A consortium led by Siemens Gas and Power has been awarded a turnkey contract for two converter stations for the Greek high-voltage direct-current link that will connect Crete, Greece’s largest and most populous island, with the mainland of Greece. The project will enable an exchange of electricity of up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) to enhance reliability of the power supply and facilitate integration of renewable energy sources in the power grid. Customer is Ariadne Interconnection SPSA, a wholly owned entity of the Greek independent power transmission operator IPTO. Commissioning of the interconnector is scheduled for mid-2023. Total order volume for the consortium is EUR 370 million. Siemens will cooperate in a consortium with one of the leading construction companies TERNA SA in Greece. The Engineering, Procurement and Construction turnkey contract comprises of design, supply and installation of a 1,000 MW converter system at a direct-current voltage of 500 kilovolts, a gas-insulated switchgear (substation on Crete including 10-year service contracts for the GIS and Control and Protection systems of both the HVDC stations. The two converter stations , one located in the Attica region near Athens and the other near Damasta in the north of Crete, will be linked by a 330-kilometer-long direct-current power cable. Terna will be responsible for the HV distribution systems, the entire civil works and the erection of all equipment of the HVDC project. Currently, Crete’s energy supply mainly relies on outdated fossil-fueled power plants, that will be shut down by the end of 2022. The interconnector will facilitate the transmission of energy from renewable resources generated on the Greek mainland to the island. Thus, the interconnector will reduce carbon emissions by 500,000 tons in its first full year of operations. Source : Strategic Research Institute
Minnesota Power Energizes Great Northern Transmission Line ALLETE Inc utility division Minnesota Powee has energized its Great Northern Transmission Line, bringing online an innovative delivery and storage system for renewable energy that spans two states and one Canadian province. The 500 kV line is now delivering 250 megawatts of carbon-free hydropower from Manitoba, Canada, to Minnesota Power customers. Minnesota Power completed the Great Northern Transmission Line in February 2020, ahead of schedule and under budget. The 224-mile line runs from the Canadian border in Roseau County to a substation near Grand Rapids, Minnesota. It consists of 800 tower structures which were fabricated in the United States and used 10,000 tons of North American steel. About 2,200 miles of wire were required to install the line’s conductors. The GNTL also is contributing significant property tax revenue to local communities along the route. With the GNTL energized and connected to Manitoba Hydro’s recently completed Manitoba-Minnesota Transmission Project at the border, the companies now have a unique “wind storage” mechanism that quickly balances energy supply and demand in Minnesota and Manitoba, and enables a larger role for renewables in the North American energy grid. The GNTL and its delivery of carbon-free hydropower are important components of Minnesota Power's EnergyForward strategy to transition away from coal and add renewable power sources while maintaining reliable and affordable service for customers. It also is part of a broader ALLETE strategy to advance and invest in critical regional transmission and distribution infrastructure to ensure grid integrity and enable cleaner energy to reduce carbon emissions. SEC Awards 5 Stars to Waad Al Shamal Power Plant Project Saudi Electricity Company has awarded 5 stars to Waad Al Shamal integrated solar and combined cycle power plant project for Environment, Health and Safety standards. The project has become one of the power plants under construction in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to obtain a 5-star rating for EHS performance from SEC. GE is providing turnkey services, including engineering, procurement and construction works, and supplying four GE 7F gas turbines, one steam turbine and four heat recovery steam generators, as well as other equipment for the project. One of the turbines at the site is the first GE gas turbine rolled out locally in the Kingdom from GE Saudi Advanced Turbines, a joint venture between Dussur and GE. SEC has set rigorous EHS protocols for project sites around workplace hygiene and housekeeping, lifting heavy loads, lighting and ventilation, waste management and other areas, with regular audits conducted by the Industrial Security Department. To be granted a 5-star rating, organizations not only have to meet the defined criteria but also have to demonstrate that they are continuously adhering to them. GE has dedicated site leaders, staff training programs and its own internal audits to implement and monitor EHS standards at the Waad Al Shamal project. Moreover, strict measures have been implemented to enable project staff to continue working safely following the COVID-19 outbreak. These measures include thermal screening of everyone entering the site, daily active random screening of staff at site by medical personnel, daily disinfection and cleaning activities, distribution of mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and masks, COVID-19 awareness sessions, prevention training and educational materials in different languages, as well as other precautions. GE won the contract for SEC’s Waad Al Shamal project, which also includes 50 megawatts of solar power, in late 2015. All four GE 7F gas turbines at the plant can now operate in simple cycle configuration. Combined cycle commissioning works are ongoing and once complete, the facility will be able to generate up to 1,390 megawatts of power, the equivalent electricity needed to supply over 500,000 Saudi homes. GE Completes Repair Project for GE’s 9E Gas Turbines in China GE announced the safe and successful completion of its first major inspection project in China since the COVID-19 outbreak at Shenzhen Baochang Power Supply Co Ltd’s Baochang Power Plant in Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. The project addressed the aging parts of the two gas turbine units, which power the 360-megawatt plant. GE and Shenzhen Baochang worked together to implement safety procedures to ensure the timely and safe completion of the outage at the site. This modernization involved a lot of lifting work and represents one of the most complex and comprehensive inspection and repair projects for GE’s 9E gas turbine in China. It also is the most complete inspection of the gas turbine, through overhaul and necessary replacement for all detachable parts, which made up more than 300 items, including the large axial, rotor, hot gas path, compressor, combustion, air inlet system and other parts of the gas turbine. The initial schedule was for 35 days but was extended to 69 days due to the customer’s expanded work scope and the 14-day quarantine before the project commenced. Engineers from GE and FieldCore, the field services execution team owned by GE to enhance GE’s ability to deliver more productive and reliable results for GE’s customers, quickly implemented measures to ensure the safe and steady operation of the outage and delivered more than one day ahead of schedule. In Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, GE has the largest installed base for the 9E gas turbine in China. In April 2019, GE announced that it had successfully completed the world’s first installation of its DLN1.0+ with Ultra Low NOx combustion upgrade on nine GE 9E gas turbines at five power generation enterprises to help improve air quality and public health throughout China by reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. RWE Invests in New Control System for Power Plant Dispatch RWE is making its power station control system fit for the future by adopting a new technology. Optime, a new SCADA system based on Siemens Spectrum Power, gives RWE a uniform control technology. SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, in other words monitoring and managing technical processes using a computer system. Previously, there were two separate systems: one for power plants in Germany and another for the Netherlands and Belgium. The new solution combines the two, while integrating RWE’s renewable energy assets in Europe. It can also accommodate additional units such as battery storage systems and diesel-powered backup generators. The new technology will be used in the RWE Supply & Trading Dispatch Centre on Europe's largest trading floor, which is located in Essen. This is where the central command and control operations of all RWE plants in Europe are located. A wall of monitors several metres high and wide shows in real time which RWE power stations are feeding power into the grid, the feed-in levels, and which plants are being ramped up or down. Engineers sit in front of the screens and optimise all of RWE's conventional power generation assets around the clock. A powerful command and control system is crucial to this task. By connecting numerous small units, RWE aims to create a virtual power plant in order to advance the energy transition. The conventional power stations and pumped-storage plants offset the volatility of renewables, and thanks to state-of-the-art technology, can be controlled down to the second. Even the requirements of transmission system operators with respect to system services, grid disturbances and minimisation of balancing energy are optimally met. The RWE control team keeps constant watch over developments as they unfold because power supply and demand can deviate from projections, for example in the event of unusual weather conditions or major events. In such cases, the engineers working in the Dispatch Centre must respond quickly. Up to 500 optimisation runs are performed every day using the power plant dispatch optimisation program developed specifically for this purpose by experts at RWE. This program determines the most economical use of all power plant units and machines and uses that data to create current target schedules. These are then transmitted via Optime as a target figure to the corresponding unit or machine control system of each power plant location. Source : Strategic Research Institute
GE Executes O&M Works at c in Iraq Besmaya Power Plant GE Gas Power successfully completed services on four 9F.03 gas turbines, two steam turbines and six generators at Iraq’s Besmaya Power Plant safely and on time, while continuing to execute wider operations and maintenance works at the site despite the many challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. These service activities reduced the risk of unplanned downtime of power generation equipment at the site, enabling the plant to reliably supply up to 3 gigawatts of electricity to the national grid to help meet the peak summer demand for power. Owned by Mass Group Holding, Besmaya is Iraq’s largest power plant. Phases 1 and 2 of the project can generate up to 3 GW, and Phase 3, which is currently under construction, is expected to add up to another 1.5 GW. The facility is the first one in the country outside the Kurdistan region to be developed by an independent power producer on a build-own-operate basis for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity. GE has supplied eight gas turbines, four steam turbines and 12 generators that are covered by a 20-year service agreement and is also responsible for O&M services for Phases 1 and 2 of the project to ensure smooth operations at the site. Additionally, GE won a contract to supply four 9F.04 gas turbines and four generators for Phase 3. Much of the electricity generated at Besmaya is fed to the capital Baghdad and surrounding areas and its uninterrupted operations are critical to power local healthcare facilities, homes, businesses and more. Beginning February 2020, over 110 GE and FieldCore, a GE-owned field services execution company, staff members liaised closely with MGH to execute the services safely and as per schedule. The works conducted included the first phase of Hot Gas Path inspection services of the gas turbines, steam turbine minor inspections and generator MAGIC (Miniature Air Gap Inspection Crawler) inspections. Experts based in the Middle East and Europe liaised with the local site team through digital tools, video conferences and phone calls on a daily basis to remotely support mechanical and commissioning works, identify and transport stocks of parts that needed to be replaced and keep track of overall project progress. To reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19, additional hygiene, health and safety measures were implemented at the site, including more frequent disinfection and cleaning activities, thermal screenings of everyone entering the site, distribution of additional mandatory personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks, COVID-19 prevention training sessions, accommodation for staff on-site, as well as other precautions.
