China Copper Imports In June Fall 27% From A Year Earlier Reuters reported that China’s unwrought copper imports in June fell 27.2% from a year earlier, official data showed that as a slowdown in the world’s second biggest economy continues to weigh on demand for the metal. Arrivals of unwrought copper, including anode, refined and semi-finished copper products, were 326,000 tonnes last month, the General Administration of Customs said, down 9.7% from 361,000 tonnes in May and the lowest since February. For the first half of 2019, unwrought imports were 2.27 million tonnes, down 12.5% from a year earlier, the data showed. Factory activity in China, which is embroiled in a trade war with the United States, shrank more than expected in June in a bearish sign for the manufacturing sector that is a key source of copper demand. Even a crackdown on imports of copper scrap that is expected to increase demand for other forms of the metal failed to keep unwrought imports buoyant. Mr He Tianyu, a copper analyst with CRU in Shanghai said that “The demand is still weakening ... for most of the sectors, especially for air conditioning.” He added that “The trade war could be one of the factors but actually the bigger problem is China’s domestic demand. This summer is weaker than last year.” Imports of copper concentrate or partially processed copper ore, were 1.47 million tonnes in June, the lowest since December. That was down 20.1% from 1.84 million tonnes in May and down 16.5% from a year earlier. However, for the first half of 2019 imports rose 10.5% from a year earlier to 10.55 million tonnes, reflecting growing smelter capacity in China. Source : Reuters
Zinc Prices to Continue Falling In 2019 Small Caps reported that zinc prices have been sliding since April and look set to fall even more amid concerns of an approaching market oversupply. Prices on the London Metal Exchange sunk to a six-month low of USD 2,371 per tonne on Tuesday, down a further 1.3% from Monday’s closing price of USD 2,403 per tonne. The price slid under the early January low of USD 2,460 per tonne and is getting troublingly close to last year’s mid-September price of USD 2,285 per tonne. Zinc on the Shanghai Futures Exchange also hit its lowest point since January of 19,190 yuan per tonne, keeping pace with the metal’s descent on the LME. The year 2019 started with the zinc sector in deficit due to rapidly depleting zinc mine reserves and minimal funds being invested into finding new reserves. Zinc stocks on the LME had just emerged from 10-year lows in the December 2018 quarter and prices were up slightly on this tight supply, coupled with increased consumption. However, at around USD 2,500per tonne, zinc wasn’t nearly as high as early 2018, where it reached more than USD 3,500 per tonne. The falling price has been rationalised by analysts as an indication of a better supplied market, signalled by rising Chinese production and a collapse in the premium for cash metal on the LME. According to Deutsche Bank analyst Nick Snowden, rumours that zinc is moving from Chinese bonded storehouses into the LME warehouse system is also pushing prices down. He said that “You could see more downside to the low USD 2,000s.” However, Mr Snowden added that prices were unlikely to fall much more because of the depressed level of warehouse stocks. China to Toughen Emission Checks on Steel Mills - Report Reuters reported that China will continue to enforce production restrictions in heavy industry in winter this year and will tighten its emission assessment on steel mills when granting exemptions from curbs already in place. Mr Liu Bingjiang head of the atmospheric environment department at Ministry of Ecology and Environment told an industrial conference that “The steel industry remains a major contributor of pollutants despite improvement in emission levels and production restrictions. This year, there will not be many first-class firms that will be exempt from curbs.” Mr Liu said MEE will bring in industrial associations to carry out emission assessments on mills to avoid fraud in the emission upgrading process. He said that “We will hand out severe punishment to mills who play tricks and will enforce the highest level of production restrictions on them, adding that he had noticed that investment and operational costs of emission upgrade at mills varied from less than CNY 20 a tonne to as high as CNY 270 a tonne in steel-making.” China has ordered mills in key regions, including Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, the Fenwei Plain and the Yangtze River Delta, to meet ultra-low emission standards by 2020.That would include more than 60% of steel capacity in the country. China’s iron ore imports in June Lowest Since February 2016 According to data from the General Administration of Customs, China’s iron ore imports in June fell from a year ago, touching their lowest since February 2016. Arrivals of iron ore were 75.18 million tonnes last month, below both the 83.24 million tonnes imported in June 2018 and May’s 83.75 million tonnes. For the first-half of the year, the world’s biggest iron ore consumer brought in 499.09 million tonnes of ore, down 5.9% from the same period a year ago Supply from Brazil has fallen following the deadly rupture of a tailings dam in January. Elsewhere, Rio Tinto has cut its forecast for 2019 shipments from the Australian region of Pilbara due to operational problems. The two countries are China’s largest iron ore suppliers. China's top two smelters sign copper concentrate deals with Antofagasta Reuters quoted two sources familiar with the matter as saying that China’s top two copper producers have signed concentrate supply deals with Chilean miner Antofagasta for the first half of 2020. Jiangxi Copper Co and Tongling Nonferrous Metals Group signed the contracts earlier than usual because of concerns about the future supply of copper concentrate, the sources said. Concentrate is partially processed copper ore that is the feedstock used to make refined metal. Contracts for annual supply are typically not agreed until around the time of the Asia Copper Week conference in Shanghai in November. These early contracts underscore the smelters’ desire to secure concentrate supply as competition for ore increases. The volume stipulated in the deals is unclear. That supply tightness has pushed treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs), the amount miners pay to smelters to process copper concentrates into refined metal, lower since the start of 2019. One of the sources put the TC/RCs that Jiangxi and Tongling agreed with Antofagasta under the contracts at USD 64 a tonne and 6.4 cents a pound, while the second source gave a range of USD 64 to USD 70 a tonne and 6.4 to 7 cents a pound. Top US Port for China Ocean Trade Reports Decline in June Imports - Report Reuters reported that the Los Angeles and Long Beach port complex, the nation’s busiest and the No 1 for ocean trade with China, handled 5.1% fewer inbound containers of cargo in June, as the trade standoff between Washington and Beijing disrupts global supply chains. Imports to the smaller Port of Long Beach dropped 13.7% from June 2018, more than offsetting the 3.5% gain at the Port of Los Angeles, which processed 396,306.5 20-foot equivalent units, a standardized maritime measurement for counting cargo containers. June was the second month of import declines at the sprawling facility, which is in the midst of what is typically the peak season for inbound shipments of goods earmarked for winter holiday sales. Logistics companies ranging from ocean shippers to parcel delivery companies are bellwethers for the global economy. Many have warned that the global economy is cooling, due in part to trade tensions between the United States and China. May’s decline was largely due to China’s Cosco Shipping’s cutting volume at the Port of Long Beach, S&P Global Market Intelligence’s trade data firm Panjiva said in a recent report. A spokesman for the Long Beach Port said the facility saw similar shifts by cargo ships in June. US seaports booked record imports in 2018 after retailers rushed to bring in a swath of Chinese goods – including furniture, appliances and auto parts – before they were subject to new tariffs. Retailers stuffed warehouses to the rafters and are still working through that inventory. The Trump administration escalated the trade conflict this May, announcing a tariff hike on USD 200 billion of Chinese products. China retaliated with tariffs on USD 60 billion of US goods. Singapore & China Sign MoU to Enhance Maritime Collaboration The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore signed a MOU with the Waterborne Transport Research Institute, an agency under China’s Ministry of Transport during the 2019 Maritime Silk Road Port International Cooperation Forum. The MOU seeks to enhance cooperation in information exchange and research and development between the two agencies, in areas such as smart port technology, maritime safety, and environmental protection. It was signed by Ms Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive of the MPA, and Mr Fei Weijun, President of the WTI, at the side of the MPF. The MPF and the China Maritime Forum takes place from 11 to 12 July 2019 in Ningbo, China, to commemorate China Maritime Day on 11 July 2019. Ms Quah said, “In an increasingly challenging and uncertain environment, it is critical for the key maritime stakeholders to strengthen connectivity and share knowledge and best practices. Singapore hopes to contribute to this effort by collaborating with China in the areas of digitalisation such as electronic exchange of certificates and bills of lading to enhance port and supply chain efficiencies, and ultimately, global trade flows.” Source : Strategic Research Institute
Door: ABM Financial News.info@abmfn.nl Redactie: +31(0)20 26 28 999 © Copyright ABM Financial News B.V. All rights reserved.
China Promises to Bring Order to Iron Ore Market Reuters reported that China’s government promised it will keep order on the iron ore market at a meeting last week with the country’s steel producers who complained about record high prices. A source said “Government officials said they support industrial participants’ assertion of their own rights and will resolutely sustain market order. China’s market regulators promised that they will tighten supervision of money flows in the benchmark iron ore futures market run by the Dalian Commodity Exchange. They will also examine whether companies are using affiliated entities to place trades on the DCE in violation of the market rules. However, the current DCE trading rules will not be changed” More than a dozen representatives from government departments, leading steel mills, including China Baowu Group, Ansteel Group and Jiangsu Shagang Group, domestic trading houses, industrial associations, consultancies and Dalian Commodity Exchange gathered at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology last Thursday, the source said. China's Excavator Sales Increase in June 2019 Xinhua, citing the China Construction Machinery Association, reported that sales for China's major excavator producers increased in June, data from industry association has shown. The country's 25 leading excavator makers sold a total of 15,121 excavators last month, up 6.6 percent YoY. In breakdown, 12,409 excavators were sold in the domestic market, down 0.3 percent YoY, while exports of the equipment soared 56.4 percent to 2,695. Major manufacturers sold a total of 137,207 excavators in the H1 of the year, up 14.2 percent from the same period last year. Over the period, exports of the equipment surged 38.7 percent from a year ago to 12,335. Sales of digging machines are an indicator of the vitality of an economy as demand is usually backed by growth in mining and infrastructure development. The association said that China sold a total of 203,420 excavators in 2018, surging 45 percent YoY. Source : Xinhua
China June Aluminium Output Climbs to Record -Report Reuters reported that China’s daily aluminium output hit record levels in June, according to Reuters calculations, even as total production for the whole of the month fell slightly. According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, world’s top aluminium producing country churned out 2.97 million tonnes of the metal last month, the bureau said. That was down from 2.98 million tonnes in May, but up 1.3% YoY. On a daily basis, output averaged 99,000 tonnes in June, according to Reuters calculations. That was up from around 96,000 tonnes in May, and surpassed the previous record of around 98,400 tonnes, sent last December. Ms Jackie Wang, an aluminium analyst at CRU in Beijing, said the high June number was likely explained by ramp-ups at projects in Yunnan and Guizhou, both in southwest China. Source : Reuters
