China is manipulating lithium and cobalt prices, mining magnate says Mining magnate Tony Sage. Mining entrepreneur Tony Sage is backing Donald Trump when it comes to the US President’s plan to reduce China’s stranglehold on resources. Mr Sage — who chairs ASX-listed companies including European Lithium, Fe Ltd, Cape Lambert and Cauldron Energy — believes China is manipulating the price of lithium and cobalt as it did with iron ore before the steel-making commodity hit record highs. “If I can take you back to 2007 to 2011, the iron ore price went from $US20 a tonne to about $US100 and the Chinese panicked,” Mr Sage told Stockhead on the sidelines of the International Mining and Resources Conference in Melbourne last week. “They were the serious buyers. They played with the stock, they played with the spot prices and they held it down for at least one or two years because they were the biggest buyer. “They’re doing exactly the same with cobalt and lithium.” Mr Sage says the spot price is not reflective of what lithium and cobalt producers are actually selling their product for. “If you look at the long-term prices, if I go now and sell my future production in cobalt I’ll get 30 per cent more than the spot price. “It happened exactly this way between 2007 and 2011 with the iron ore price, and to a lesser extent the coal price, because the buyers of the material dictate the price.” Right now about 85 per cent of the world’s lithium comes from China, but in the same way the Asian powerhouse currently dominates in rare earths, it wants to increase its control over lithium and other battery metals. “They want to be the controllers of rare earths, cobalt and lithium because that’s the future — battery storage, EVs, your mobile phone, everything, and they’re manipulating the price,” Mr Sage said. One city in China, Zhejiang, already 30 per cent of its taxis and 50 per cent of its buses are electric. Mr Sage says that is just a test case and the whole country wants to be fully electric. “If they replicate that around China, there will be no cobalt and lithium for the rest of the world,” he said. China can’t keep prices down forever Following four years of iron ore price manipulation, the Chinese could no longer keep the price down and in 2011 it hit a record high of over $US190 a tonne. Most of the deals done between battery metals producers and buyers are private and the price is negotiated. Mr Sage said if one of his companies, Cape Lambert Resources (ASX:CFE), were to do a deal for its cobalt it would be asking for more than the spot price. “We won’t be asking for $US65,000 a tonne, we’ll be asking for $US75,000 or $US80,000 for a long-term sale,” he said. “You talk to all the buyers and sellers, it is being manipulated by the Chinese and that’s why I’m a pro-Trump guy on trade because they do these sorts of things in virtually in every mineral and they want to corner the market.” Mr Sage is also chairman of European Lithium (ASX:EUR), which owns the Wolfsberg lithium project in Austria. Europe has declared lithium and cobalt “critical minerals” and is aggressively pushing to be a bigger supplier. “Once our [definitive feasibility study] is done we will get significant help from the EU to build the plant there,” Mr Sage said. “They want three or four hydroxide plants all over Europe so 30 or 40 per cent of the world’s supply can come from a different spot.”stockhead.com.au/resources/china-is-m...
Cobalt prices could rally 30% by mid-2019 Frik Els | about 14 hours ago | Cobalt is almost always a byproduct of nickel and copper mining. Image: Glencore Instagram Since hitting near decade highs in March, cobalt prices are down by more than a third, languishing in the low $50,000s. Now a new report sees the battery raw material recovering some 30% in price. And quickly. While a change in subsidies in China, responsible for half the world's EV sales, hasn't helped, it's mainly new supply from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that has depressed the price. Glencore's announcement that exports of cobalt hydroxide from its Katanga copper-cobalt mine in the DRC have been halted due to high levels of uranium will see prices hit $70,000 a tonne by the middle of next year, the Capital Economics report forecasts. We think that prices will remain volatile but they may well average around this level over the next twelve months The London-headquartered researcher says while production will be stockpiled, the $25m ion-exchange plant to remove the radioactivity is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, and "is projected to take until the end of next year before all production is processed and sold": Given this development, we are raising our short-term projection for the price of cobalt as we now believe the market to be tighter until the middle of next year than we had anticipated. Thereafter, we think that prices will remain volatile but they may well average around this level over the next twelve months as the backlog of production is sold, absorbing a sizeable portion of growing global demand over that period. Capital Economics expects cobalt prices to strengthen further, reaching $80,000 by end 2020, largely thanks to battery demand. Glencore idled Katanga in 2015 for an extensive refurbishment and only restarted operations earlier this year. This year, to date Glencore has produced 25,700 tonnes from its DRC mines. In July, Glencore said it expected to achieve an annual rate of production of 40,000 tonnes by the end of the first quarter next year. That number represents a third of total global output. Cobalt sulphate (the refined form commonly used in the battery supply chain) prices in China have fallen six months in a row and are trading at the lowest level since mid-2017, according to assessments by Benchmark Minerals, a battery supply chain data provider. Caspar Rawles, an analyst at Benchmark, in an interview with Bloomberg characterized the timing of the Katanga announcement as "opportunistic" because Glencore is currently negotiating 2019 supply deals. The DRC, which is currently in the midst of a contentious election and in the grip of an ebola outbreak, produces more than 60% of the world's cobalt, a share that's set to grow over the next five years. The central African country also holds half the world’s reserves of cobalt, which is almost always mined as a by-product of copper and nickel. 1 Comment MINING.com Rauch • an hour ago Two questions. Do other mines have uranium in their cobalt ores? Is there uranium in their copper as well?www.mining.com/cobalt-price-rally-30-...
Als iemand een gouden tip zoekt! Check Cobalt 27 Corp. Volgens mij gigantisch potentieel. Ik ga niet alles vertellen...check het maar.

Chinese battery firm halts purchases of cobalt from Glencore – sources 14TH DECEMBER 2018 BY: REUTERS SAVE THIS ARTICLE EMAIL THIS ARTICLE FONT SIZE: -+ LONDON/BEIJING – Chinese battery firm GEM has stopped buying cobalt from Glencore as the price of the battery material crashed below that agreed in a three-year deal between the two companies, sources close to the matter said. GEM said in a March 14 regulatory filing that it would buy 52 800 tonnes of cobalt from mining and trading giant Glencore between 2018 and 2020, without revealing the price.www.miningweekly.com/article/chinese-...
Volgt er nog iemand de Kobalt wereld. De prijs van Kobalt zelf in ingestort, en ook de Kobalt mijnen kregen klappen de laatste maanden... Wat is er gaande ?
