$9.6 Billion in 3 Days — ETF Analyst Highlights Remarkable Early Success of Bitcoin ETFs -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Tuesday, the third day of trading for the U.S.-based spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), there was a noticeable decrease in activity with trading volumes falling by 37% from the levels seen on Jan. 12, 2024. The day concluded with most funds slightly over 1% lower against the U.S. dollar, with Grayscale’s GBTC capturing the lion’s share of the trading volume. Grayscale’s GBTC Dominates as Bitcoin ETF Trading on Tuesday Taps $1.94 Billion This downturn in trading vigor was evident when compared to the initial two days for the nine newly introduced spot bitcoin ETFs, along with the recently converted GBTC ETF. Market data revealed that the total trading volume for the ten U.S.-focused spot BTC ETFs amounted to a total of $1.94 billion. The day prior saw $3.15 billion in global trade volume and to date, $9.63 billion has been recorded across all three days of trading. GBTC and Blackrock’s IBIT dominated the trading volume, with GBTC registering a significant $1.01 billion and IBIT recording $372.31 million. The Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) experienced substantial trading as well, with $322.82 million, while Ark Invest and 21shares’ ARKB ETF observed $124.52 million in trades. This means, out of the ten spot bitcoin ETFs, those four equated to $1.83 billion or 94.32% of the day’s volume. At 11:59 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, in the afternoon, Bloomberg’s senior ETF analyst, Eric Balchunas, remarked on the trading volume. He observed that it demonstrated a “dropoff rate” similar to that of BITO, describing BITO as “the most successful organic launch in ETF history.” Meanwhile, bitcoin prices have been rangebound over the last few days since the ETFs launched with bitcoin (BTC) down 1.2% on Jan. 17, 2024. Later in the evening on Tuesday, Balchunas further noted how well the ten spot BTC ETFs did over the three-day run reaching nearly $10 billion. “Let me put into context how insane $10b in volume is in first 3 days,” Balchunas said. “Today, they did a COMBINDED $450m in volume. The best one did $45m. And many have had months to get going. IBIT alone is seeing more activity than the entire ’23 Freshman Class.” What do you think about the spot bitcoin ETF trade volume over the past three trading days? Analyst Advises Investors to Buy the Bitcoin Dip — Predicts 'Asymmetric Upside Ahead' ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A senior analyst with global asset management firm Alliance Bernstein has recommended that investors buy the bitcoin dip and focus on “the new bitcoin adoption cycle.” His advice followed the approval of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). “The minor selloffs are opportunities in view of the asymmetric upside ahead,” the analyst explained. ‘Buy the Dip and Focus on New Bitcoin Adoption Cycle’ Global asset management firm Alliance Bernstein’s senior analyst specializing in digital assets, Gautam Chhugani, has advised investors to buy the bitcoin dip, according to a client note reviewed by Yahoo Finance. The analyst stated: Our simple advice to all investors is — buy the dip and focus on the new bitcoin adoption cycle. The minor selloffs are opportunities in view of the asymmetric upside ahead. The SEC approved 11 spot bitcoin ETFs last week. The anticipation surrounding the approval sent the price of bitcoin soaring past $49K. However, it subsequently dropped to around $42K. At the time of writing, BTC is trading at $43,170.14. In November last year, Alliance Bernstein said in a note that it expects the price of bitcoin to reach $150,000 by 2025. Chhugani explained at the time that this prediction is driven by the optimism of anticipated spot bitcoin ETF approval. “You may not like bitcoin as much as we do, but a dispassionate view of bitcoin as a commodity suggests a turn of the cycle,” he noted. Many people see the SEC approval of spot bitcoin ETFs as a landmark moment. Crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN)’s chief financial officer, Alesia Haas, told Yahoo Finance that the approval was “a landmark day for crypto.” However, regarding the widespread adoption of cryptocurrency, she noted: “This is a long journey and this is just one step along the way.” The executive believes that spot bitcoin ETFs will draw “trillions of dollars that were previously not able to access crypto assets and not able to access bitcoin.”

www.coindesk.com/policy/2024/01/18/cr...
"As I’ve previously written, AI and crypto technologies complement each other well, so it’s not surprising to see a growing AI ecosystem emerging within Web3. Despite all the attention, I’ve noticed a lot of confusion about what these protocols do, what’s hype vs. real, and how they all fit together. This report will map out the Web3 AI supply chain, define each layer in the tech stack, and explore the various competitive landscapes. By the end you should have a basic understanding of how the ecosystem works and what to look out for next."

Coinbase, SEC lock horns in US court over crypto securities ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jan 17 (Reuters) - A federal judge in Manhattan on Wednesday grilled Coinbase (COIN.O), and the U.S. securities regulator about their divergent views on whether and when digital assets are securities, in a case closely watched by the cryptocurrency industry. Coinbase has asked the court to dismiss the Securities and Exchange Commission's lawsuit alleging the largest U.S. crypto exchange is flouting its rules. Judge Katherine Polk Failla on Wednesday heard arguments from both sides, focusing her questions on the legal precedent defining securities, and the attributes of several crypto tokens traded on Coinbase and elsewhere that the regulator has deemed investment contracts. Failla did not decide the matter from the bench, noting she was still weighing some questions after the more than four-hour hearing. The judge's ruling is likely to have implications for digital assets by helping to clarify the SEC's jurisdiction over the sector. The case is one of a slew the SEC has brought against the crypto sector. The agency focused initially on companies selling digital tokens, but under the leadership of chair Gary Gensler has targeted firms offering trading platforms and clearing activity, and acting as broker-dealers. The SEC sued Coinbase in June, saying the firm facilitated trading of at least 13 crypto tokens, including Solana, Cardano and Polygon, which it said should have been registered as securities. The Securities Act of 1933 outlined a definition of the term "security," yet many experts rely on a U.S. Supreme Court case to determine if an investment product constitutes a security. A key test is whether people are contracting to invest in a common enterprise with the expectation of profit. Coinbase, the world's largest publicly traded cryptocurrency exchange, has argued that crypto assets, unlike stocks and bonds, do not meet that definition of an investment contract, a position held by the vast majority of the crypto industry. Lawyers for the SEC argued that securities differ from purchases of collectibles like baseball cards or even Beanie Babies, referencing a 1990s trend in which Americans bought the dolls with the expectations they would rise in value. Patrick Costello, SEC assistant chief litigation counsel, argued that the crypto tokens at the heart of the case support a larger "enterprise," making them akin to an investment contract. "When the value of the network or the ecosystem increases, so does the value of the (associated) token," he said. Still, Failla told SEC attorneys she was "concerned" that the agency was asking her to "broaden the definition of what constitutes a security." The SEC said buyers of digital assets, even on secondary markets such as Coinbase's platform, were purchasing the tokens as investments akin to stock shares or bonds. But Coinbase's lawyers disagreed, noting that buyers of such tokens were not signing contracts entitling them to proceeds of a common enterprise. “I’ll tell you this: I think there would have been a lot of surprise to find that an investment contract didn’t have anything to do with a contract,” said William Savitt, a lawyer for Coinbase. The judge appeared dismissive of Coinbase's argument that the lawsuit implicates the so-called major questions doctrine. That legal principle is based on a Supreme Court ruling that says federal agencies cannot regulate without specific congressional authorization. The SEC in its lawsuit also targeted Coinbase's "staking" program, in which it pools assets to verify activity on blockchain networks and takes commissions, in exchange for "rewards" to customers. The SEC said that program should have been registered with the agency. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------www.reuters.com/legal/coinbase-sec-se...
Franklin Templeton (1400 miljard USD onder beheer) en een van de bedrijven die een spot bitcoin ETF hebben gelanceerd, spreekt van "a lot of “escalating demand” for the flagship cryptocurrency" volgens CEO Jenny Johnson. Johnson said the launch of Franklin Templeton’s Bitcoin ETF is a strategic response to the increased use of Bitcoin in transactions and its integration into the broader financial system. She added that the technology underpinning Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has created “diverse and novel investment opportunities” that will continue to evolve. Reflecting on Bitcoin’s role in global finance, Johnson echoed BlackRock CEO Larry Fink’s sentiments regarding Bitcoin as a hedge against oppressive governments. She shared insights into how Bitcoin serves as a safety net for individuals in unstable regimes.cryptoslate.com/franklin-templeton-ce...
